In November last year a standard pack of supermarket own brand butter was 87 pence.
Two days ago that same pack of butter was £1.60.
An increase of just over 85%
But officially inflation is around 2-3 %

Do I believe official government statistics or the evidence of actual price rises in the real world?

It's the price of butter, believe it or not there is a real shortage of butter. Apparently a lot is being exported to China, France is actually enjuring a shortage of the stuff, none on the shelves.

That's right.

Perhaps underlining the need to rid ourselves of the dead hand of the EU and its bizzare agricultural policies. We used to have a decent UK dairying industry.

" Used to " is the operative word . Even if we started today it would take 10 years to have a stable milk industry . Successive governments have placed the land owner's interests before the farmers and it looks as though we are going to pay the price .

Oh that is such a relief . I have been worrying over this all morning that my porridge may soon be consumed without the accompanying dairy product . Now I can get on with my life in the knowledge that May & Co will look after me .

Oh quite, who is going to notice a few pence on butter? Those that do will have margarine to fall back on which in any even is said to be good for them.
