Newbury Today Forum _ Newbury News _ Train drivers strike

Posted by: On the edge Nov 8 2017, 08:00 AM

Do the striking train drivers have a point; expecting just one person to look after a train simply isn't safe?

The bosses answer is that advances in technology mean it is very safe and the drivers are just being Luddites.

However, as regular users of the rail 'service' see, on a daily basis, the technology the rail firms use simply isn't up to the job. How often are there delays because of 'signalling problems', why won't rail cards etc. let you through the barriers, why won't they display platform numbers on their iPhone apps, the list goes on.

So perhaps the drivers have a point!

Anyone who has been on a train late on a Saturday night with a drunken rabble digesting their football teams performance is grateful of the guards presence , the fact that he could , in reality , do very little if things got heated does not distract from the psychology .
The amount of money lost through industrial action over this issue would have paid the guard's wages for an awfully long time .
And what does the Minister in charge do ? **** all ! angry.gif

Not to mention lost fares due to unmanned trains and stations.
EDIT : Sorry unstaffed! dry.gif
(Must keep the gender police happy!)

This is the weird thing, late at night when a 'guard' would be nice; there are none. During the day there's loads; often without a clue as to what's going on! tongue.gif

Brings a whole new meaning to " Quis custodiet ipsos custodes " I wonder what Aslef have to say regarding guardless trains presently running ?

Trains are indeed 'Gender Neutral' as apparently is everything else if the media is to be believed.

There are no guards on the "turbo" type trains on our and many other lines. They are Driver Only Operation (DOO).
Only the HST's have guards. (Or Train Managers as they now like to call them!).

"Legal recognition for non-binary people planned in Scotland"

Well that's good, I was getting worried about that. smile.gif You couldn't make this stuff up. Oh wait, you don't need to now. laugh.gif

Looking forward to 'cheap day return, make it half and half please' laugh.gif

The gender issue is quite interesting. Presumably, if we can now choose our gender, by the same token, we must be able to choose our race?

You are white. You are bad. Your forefathers were bad. You should repent and give all your assets over to the oppressed to make up for the sins of the past. Just saying as you are obviously a baddun. One of my colleagues is very successful. A self made man. Ghanaian. Lovely man. Christian. When he gets home he is called "coconut" by his fellow countrymen. Black on the outside. White on the in. He takes it as it is meant. A joke. This country has lost its sense of humour.

Oh for the days of Sambo, Nignog and Chalky on the TV. We knew how to laugh then.

Why are you always looking to be offended? May I suggest you find a "safe space" and retire to it?

I think he’s pointing something out more than taking offence? I have to wonder why Love Thy Neighbour is not so funny these days, but other shows from the period are.

Being controversial: Blazing Saddles is one of my favourite films. unsure.gif

I think it's fair to remember that in all these programmes the bigot was the one made out to be the ignorant fool.

You can't do that now though can you?
How would you cater for all the other genders?
No, trains have to be "gender neutral" like Top Shop and their changing rooms! laugh.gif

Guys! Gals! Let's not let this thing go nuclear now. Nothing wrong with a bit of baiting but don't let it get silly.

Posted by: SirWilliam Nov 10 2017, 03:36 PM

Perhaps I could pen a new sit com ? " Love thy forum buddies " , or " Insulting Persons or Persons Unknown is Fun ". The list is endless , the material is there all I need is for BBC3 to bung me an advance and we will be up and running by xmas . Quite prepared to cut you in as a sign of gratitude for your contribution . cool.gif

TDh - I’m not gay (not bothered that you are) but not interested in a “chat” as you term it. Thanks for the offer though. laugh.gif

You seem fascinated by the term gay. You must be either gay yourself or a homophobic.

I think you both should get a room. Give TDH a chance to punch his lights out! That'll learn 'im!

Has anyone considered that they may just be two people head over heels in love and use this online slagging to detract the casual viewer from the truth .
But there again..........
