Newbury Today Forum _ Newbury News _ What do YOU want to see come to Parkway?

Posted by: Andrea Apr 5 2010, 10:23 AM

Sorry, I haven't posted in here in a while and I couldn't see if there was already a topic dedicated to what we want to come to the new Parkway development.

I'm not sure if all that's planned is shops and restaurants, but I'd love to see a Hot Yoga studio come to Newbury. I know there would be a large amount of people who would go to it and it's something that no gym in Newbury can offer right now.

Also to be on the unhealthy side, I'd love a Mexican Restaurant as well! laugh.gif

Is there anything in particular you'd like to see in the new Parkway development?

Posted by: On the edge Apr 5 2010, 10:31 AM

Some fountains.

Posted by: Jayjay Apr 5 2010, 01:01 PM

More what I dont want. Estate agents, coffee shops and charity shops.

Unlikely I know but hey...

A Lakeland or equivalent style cook shop.

Oooh! Yes please! John Lewis would win my vote.
Failling that, a decent toy shop (I sorely miss Woolworths for presents for children, find myself wandering aimlessly in ToysRUs in Swindon). Of course, John Lewis toy department would be preferable......... wink.gif

Posted by: TallDarkAndHandsome Apr 6 2010, 08:46 AM

I'd like to see some Stocks where we can throw rotten fruit at some of the scum that Newbury has. laugh.gif

There is a toy shop in the small unit on the corner in the Kennet Centre.

Two toy shops in the Kennet in fact. Plus the ELC & Games Workshop.

Would be fantastic business for the greengrocer next door!!

Posted by: TallDarkAndHandsome Apr 6 2010, 10:03 AM

What about a big Pyramid to show the connection between the Earl of Carnarvon and Egypt?

Posted by: Ziggy Apr 6 2010, 10:08 AM

A couple of members of my family would like H&M please. I think that it would be nice (although unlikely) for the owners to keep a number of units for low rent for independent local businesses. Or put all the big chains in Parkway and get some proper shops in Northbrook Street. A greengrocer, fishmonger and deli would be nice.

Posted by: Roost Apr 6 2010, 10:57 AM

I'd just like to see that the shop units are actually filled!

Quite unlikely when you see the number of empty units around Newbury at the moment!!

Posted by: Newburymafia Apr 6 2010, 12:46 PM

I'd like to see a wagamama and Yo! Sushi (Or their independent equivelents) and somewhere you can buy decent blokes clothes/suits that appeal to under 30s. Shakeaway would be nice too. Mmmm.

H & M are, allegedly one of the big name stores to be coming to Parkway.

I doubt there would be enough trade to sustain a Greengrocers or Fishmongers in Newbury. We have had them in the past & they have all closed.
We have a Deli of sorts ( although I have never been in as it really seems to be some kind of clandestine wino's hangout ) in the Market Place.

Yeah, Come back Foster Brothers....

Posted by: Andy1 Apr 6 2010, 03:48 PM

For people who have no imagination; like myself. If there ends up being lots of different shops H&M, Lush, John Lewis and so on, I'd like to see vouchers for the whole shopping centre, so you can use them in whatever shop you want

Posted by: Hugh Saskin Apr 6 2010, 06:24 PM

a Gieves, please - like there used to be on The Hard in Pompey, plus a decent shoe shop

Even if we were to widen the scope to include latchikos in the stocks for wasting their employers time, rescources and equipment posting stuff on here, doubt it could be made to pay. Anyone actually know where a greengrocer is still trading locally? Smiths in Marlborough recently packed up, unable to compete - is the one in Whitchurch still going?

I appreciate these, but I'm talking a toy shop that offers a wide range of Galt, Lego, Playmobil, Little Tykes, family board games, jigsaw puzzles etc, as well as the cheaper & the "fashionable" toys. ELC sells mainly own brand (from memory). Hawkins Bazaar is great for gadgety toys too, but as I said, JL covers all these. I know I can get all this online, but it's so much more fun to go into the shop to try & buy, methinks. When I was a little girl, Camps toy dept was fab at Christmas, that all year round is what I'd like to see smile.gif

Hmmm, Toys Я Us does all what you ask - even stocks board games. Festival Place had a 'market' stall chap with some very good old fashioned games last Xmas.

It does indeed....in Swindon, Reading etc, but the OP asked what I wanted to come to Parkway wink.gif . I don't think a ToysRUs would be right in Parkway, but I would like to see a decent toy shop, especially with the loss of Camps toy dept, Woolies etc. Or a JL....Pleazzzze?!

Greengrocers in Hungerford, not many left these days. They are usually cheaper and fresher than Tesco's as well.

If we did manage to attract some of the bigger name shops to come to parkway, do you think they would survive?

Why would anyone pay full price for designer clothes when we have Swindon outlook and Bicester village within a 30 minute drive!!!

With both locations housing designer shops such as Superdry, Nike, Ralph Lauren, Ugg, Next, Timberland, GAP, H&M etc...... The list just goes on and on and all at discount prices.

I worry that we have so many empty shops at the moment, within a year or two the new development will be just as empty and Newbury will be in an even worse state.

You are probably quite right, Simon. Things would have to be pretty desperate to warrant us driving to Swindon, though - they would need to be giving the stuff away. What a dump...

Posted by: Simon Apr 7 2010, 11:36 AM

True but as the outlet village is on the outskirts, it makes it very easy to get to. Plus they have regular promotions for the whole outlet, such as the other weekend if you spent over £100 on the day you got two free tickets to a day health spa.

Worth a gamble going there as I have found many bargains in the stores there.

Would be nice to have loads of great shops in Newbury, but I would imagine they will be all full price like the stores we have now

Sorry but I have always found the designer outlet village to be selling last years fashions that no one wanted first time around! That said I havent been there for a few years for that reason!

The point of designer shops at the Parkway would be to stop people going out of town surely!!

I would like a French Connection and a Boros (they sell lovely handbags if you didnt know), and a decent shoe shop like Faith!

Reminds me of a hilariously cutting remark I overheard a long time ago on Newbury station while waiting for the morning commute to London: "I do like your dress. Such a pity they didn't include a shift in this year's collection."

The funny thing was, I don't think she meant it as a put-down.

Howsabout some CHOCOLATE fountains....... or some yoghurt fountains ..... and some Hot Yoghurt instead of the Hot Yogi

Oh dear.... Not more young girls wandering around with FCUK emblazoned across their tops...... Dreadful! There was (still is) a t-shirt company that does various logos for t-shirts in support of the Great Viking King of England who reigned from 1016-1035. Take a bow King CNUT
http://kingcnut.com/
I bought one of their CNUT t-shirts as a mini-protest to all the FCUKers who thought a similar smutty looking designer word was cool to wear, ..........but I haven't been brave enough to wear it in public like that shameless lot!

I do have a fear that Park Way will remain empty for quite a while in the current economic climate. It would be nice if the units around the cinema could start to look like they might be taking on owners but it's not looking good.

A bit like all those empty glass buildings on Green Park in Reading. Every time I drive past on the M4 at night I can't help thinking they have been a real 'investment' millstone for some badly advised banker....

Posted by: ossy1 Apr 8 2010, 07:39 AM

Spartacus - get with the times. Go into a real French Connection shop and you wont find an fcuk emblazoned shirt!
The ones you do see are cheap knock offs.

Oh and im not a young girl but thanks for the compliment!! Lol

I'd like to see a litter free environment and not have to listen to foul mouth morons and oafs.
Sadly I know I will be disappointed.

We even made South Today last night with the vandals / asbo types / drunks down by Pound Street / Argyll Road. Still no CCTV!

Still I expect they will all be looking forward to a new shoplifting experience when Parkway opens......

It's OK, quite expensive though, and not exactly first class service. Lakeland has a much larger range and is full of more useful "everyday" things.

Funny you should mention 'service' .....

They have some nice stuff in there - mid you dilligent prowling in the aisles of TK Max often means you can find similar quality cookware at less than half the price.
