A couple of weeks ago I bought a new and expensive camera from them. I also took out a 3 year guarantee. I bought it from them because they knew what they were talking about and I liked the service. First I went to Curry's and they didn't have a clue and their service was appalling. It will be sad if it does close.

With Comets gone and Jessops going it will mean that Curry's will have a monopoly.

The evening news said they had already stopped taking gift vouchers and so on. If they do shut overnight I do not know where I stand as they do not do any repairs themselves, but farm that sort of work out. How do I get it back? Jessop's web site is up and running as normal, or it was a couple of hours ago.

Another question; where do we stand on guarantees taken out?

Read the detail. Manufacturer warranty will be unaffected, but less convenient. Extended warranty is usually an insurance. Check with the supplier. (I had one, the supplier was Domestic & General)

What has done them in, as it has with many specialist shops that are now boarded up, is that people go in there for some great advice, spend ages having a feel for which camera is comfortable and then walk out the shop saying "I'll think about it and come back tomorrow!" only to log on to Amazon and get it cheaper.

Too many people just do their shopping online. My daughter seems to JUST buy her clothes and shoes online when you'd think it would be easier to go in a shop and try that sort of stuff on... "Nah, if it doesn't fit it just gets posted back for free" All sorts of High Street shops are feeling the real retail squeeze from the 'Power of Amazon'

I prefer personal service on items like cameras, computers etc. I do buy books though on Amazon.

Although I do/did use Jessops quite a lot I do buy on line. When I bought my Nikon D4 I saved a thousand pounds buying on line as against Jessops prices. Cannot afford to turn that sort of money saving down.

Normally guarantees & warranties are through a separate company so you should be fine.

If it's a care plan you have, then that's provided by Domestic & General (as NWNREADER stated) - http://www.jessops.com/Home/HelpDetail.aspx?id=73

I would have thought your camera is with a third party repair centre.
Is there any info on the receipt?

I would say Curry's won't have a monopoly, they also are up against onliners.

Slight problem. Received an email from them a few days ago saying the camera was repaired and ready to be picked up. It is not in the Newbury shop but a shop a considerable way away.

If you'd paid for a new camera and hadn't received it you might have some difficulty getting either the camera or your money because you have a contract with a company that's in administration, but when you put a thing in for repair it's still yours - it's called bailment - all you hand over is possession, not ownership. It might take some hassle finding where it is but I'm sure you'll get it back in the end. Best of luck.

It's a shame Jessups has gone, I found it to be a helpful, competent shop, particularly for getting prints made.

If Jessops was still going this lens which is second hand in this add would cost approx £95.000 new, thats a lot of saving.

Curry's has a monopoly on the high street. Which is what I meant.

Not exactly a specialist camera shop though. Great for compacts and cheap £200 slr types but that's it and if you want help or technical info then go home and Google it.

With Jessops closing there won't be any specialist camera shops around (at least in Newbury).

Granted you can go and google a hundred different camera's but a specialist can make it easier for you.

There is a camera shop on Cheap Street, left hand side as you approach the station from town. It also sells specialist whisky!
