I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the White Horse at Hermitage. Excellent food and friendly owner/staff.

Though a little awkward to get to from Newbury at the moment with the B4009 closed.

I like the White Horse, I am a bit of a foodie though and not at all fussy. My missus is fussy and has been told abruptly on 2 occasions that she cannot make substitutions like mash for chips, or salad for veg etc...

I always thought foodies were very fussy.

I think particular, rather than fussy.

Hi Ossy1, as per my second post on this thread I have recently been to the White Hart in Hamstead Norreys.

I think we may be going to the Rampant Cat in Woolton Hill, mainly because the Grandparents live in the village and we can all walk there.

The Crab is good, but last time we went, the service VERY slow. We also like The Sun in the Wood and the Swan at Newtown where the food has always been good, despite the OTT presentation. If you want something more pub-like and cheaper, the Craven Arms or the Furze Bush are good value.

The Rowbarge at Woolhampton is good and reasonably upmarket.

The Royal Oak at Yattendon is hard to beat.

I like the Swan at Newtown and the Red House at Hamstead Marshall.
You know, we are probably all sitting next to each other at some time.
Spooky

The Fox and Hounds at Uffington did absolutely wonderful food last time I was there, about a month ago. It wasn't expensive either.

More expensive (ok, often much more expensive) is The Coach in Beedon, but the food has been consistently great (particularly the puddings) and if you go for the various deals they offer through the week if can work out much cheaper.

I'm quite the fan of the food at The Ibex in Chaddleworth too. £5 for decent ham, egg and chips gets my vote.

I've only just moved to the area from Scotland, so am enjoying discovering where is good and where is not.

Without hijacking the thread... which takeaways are good (and good value!) in the general Hungerford area?

If your out that way I would suggest The Palm ( Indian Food) it does a great take away, and the Restaurant is fabulous, along with fabulous service.

The fish-and-chip shop at the southern end of the High Street (name escapes me) is excellent and very competitively priced. There is a good Chinese restaurant also in the High Street almost under the railway bridge. I don't know if it is still functioning, but Curry Express, which actually operates from an industrial unit in the north of the town, does excellent Indian food delivered within a 5 mile radius.

If, as I suspect, you live in Great Shefford - cheer up, life can only get better! However, the village is within Curry Express's delivery area and you might also be interested to know that there is a Great Shefford forum at http://www.forum.greatshefford.org.uk/. At busy times it may get as many as two postings a month, so your participation would be welcome.

Yep, I would agree with that.
The only other take-away that I know of in Hungerford is the Moonlight Indian in the High street.
Reasonable price but quality not consistant in my view.
Although not take-aways these two are good pub food.
The Down Gate on the edge of the Common does good simple food at a good price.
The Plume is good food too.

Thanks for your recommendations...we shall gradually try them out.

I must sound ever so sheltered but having access to shops and takeaways all of a sudden is still a bit of novelty so it's a fun weekly treat to not have to cook.

We'll see how long it lasts.

I picked up the menu for Spice Valley in Lambourn. The restaurant certainly smelled nice...if that's anything to go by.

Brewmaster, I indeed now living in Great Shefford. Dare I admit to quite liking it? It's a veritable metropolis to me. I love the little shop, although the pub appears to be deserted much of the time. While I'm full of intentions to go up to the social club of an evening I have so far only visited it once.

You're not from the brewery up the road are you?

I noticed that the Great Shefford forum isn't exactly frequented....I could chat away to myself on there but then everyone would think I was nuts.

I've been tasked with finding somewhere to go for dinner with some friends, so The Palm it is. Thanks.

As I kicked this off I thought I would give an update. In the end we settled on the Furze Bush, mainly for the fact that we could walk there. Food was good, although I have definately had better pub roasts. The pub grub seemed to be the better option, those who had scampi & chips and ham egg & chips definately looked the happier. Service was excellent.

I think the roast was £9.95 and the pub grub was around the £7.95 mark.

I spent far too long in Yorkshire - everywhere seem so expensive these days! Maybe I'm just getting old. We paid £8.50 at the Robin hood on Sunday for the carvery though, so we probably would be better off spending the extra quid.
