Just read you need to update the photograph on your licence every 10 years. Just checked and mine is 2 years out of date. Off to the photo booth tomorrow to try and avoid the £1,000 fine.

Until earlier this year my licence didn't have a photo on it at all. So it doesn't make sense that having one with a photo that is out of date can be an offence. It probably is, though.

Paper licences become invalid in 2033. I got my photo licence in 2000 and thought, like my paper licence, it was valid until I was 70. The licence is valid but the photo becomes invalid after 10 years. Does not make sense to me, why not just say the licence is invalid as you have to get a replacement every 10 years.

I have just learned that the license does expire at the ten year mark. Your entitlement is still active but it is the license not the photo which needs renewing. Incidentally, whilst on holiday here in the states, my license is OK, (because of the entitlement), but in the UK it is not. Weird. I also had to get the DVLA to fax something which is a pain, but they were surprisingly efficient, and it only cost a fiver.

It's been a very clever, subtle money-making scam by the Govt. Nobody considered the very small print when they opted to renew their old paper licences with the more convenient and modern plastic and appreciated that they were letting themselves step into the govt trap... Updates every 10yrs which have to be paid for, large fines if you fail to renew.

If it looks like a scam and feels like a scam it probably is a scam.....

Yeah, they should tender out such work like this to private firms like G4S. That would work.

No, just don't do it at all - like much of what the state does, the only beneficiary is Big State plc.

Sure, photo-id's are a much better idea because Big State plc can charge you for a new one every ten years - and better still, if you forget, it'll sting you for £1000. Oh happy days.

I'm OK, I have a paper licence, and I'm saving an absolute fortune on allotment rent so I'm rolling in it. Anyways, I'm not going to get overexcited about a £10 renewal, there are bigger issues, for starter there's the Big State student scam - £30k personal debt for nurses to learn how to empty bed pans at university. But that's really for another thread...

The reason is that out masters in the EU demanded a common style of licence across all 27
countries.

You're right, the bed-pan thing was less than complimentary and I apologise for that. I meant no disrespect to nurses or nursing, the point I was trying to make is that nursing is not best trained for in a university where student nurses are obliged to run up enormous debts, it is most appropriately trained for on-the-job in paid employment - the core skills are essentially caring. I have a reasonable idea of what level of skill and training is required for a modern nurse; it does not require a university degree, and making a degree a requirement serves only the universities and the state bureaucrats who administer the student loans, and it may even have contributed to the decline in nursing standards by recruiting accademic but dispassionate nurses.
