Everyday I see the one by the cinema into Cheap Street ignored, does the no right turn rule there serve any real purpose and if so why is it so regularly flaunted?

Serious answers only please...........

I dont think the problem is with the sign I think the problem is with the amount of idiot drivers in Newbury, there is several signs heading down the road past kennet center and George and Pelican warning about the bollards and still you get idiots who some how are blind and miss them there are 3 signs how do they not see them ???

My guess is, as you imply in the question, it's not obvious why turning right is such a bad idea and people don't care to be told what to do gratuitously.

And it flouted.

I know it is a no right turn, but if the road is empty, I ignore it and turn right if that is what I want to do. Someone please let me know if they start to enforce it! tongue.gif

The sign isn't visible at the point where you stop to actually turn. I know it doesn't need to be but I think it would help. I turn right there sometimes though and I know it's there.

I do wonder why the rules are no right turn there, maybe the order should be rescinded, but whilst it's there surely it should be adhered to.........

Do you do the same with speed limits?
You could change this statement to:- I know it is a 30mph limit, but if the road is empty, I ignore it and exceed it if that is what I want to do. Someone please let me know if they start to enforce it!

In some cases that might be true, although the slower the limit, the fewer MPH I will wonder over. I try to avoid going over an indicated 35 in a 30, but I do get up to 50 in a 40 sometimes.

I think your argument is specious, as speed has an obvious safety connotation, although (for example) 30 along stretches of Monks Lane seems mean (it was once 40)!

Personally I make an effort to keep carefully to the speed limit, and neither would I make a right turn if the sign said not to, but you were trying to understand how other people behaved and suggested a reason.

And the "No Right Turn" signs are there for no reason at all?

I cannot think of one. Bear-in-mind, it might have been for a time when the road was busier (pre-pedestrianisation) and perhaps it is now rather redundant?

On this I favour the keep the No Right Turn, but turn a blind-eye to ignorance.

Highways Engineers try to control where traffic goes so the other parts of the local network can cope....

I could understand that, but traffic from Cheap Street is small in volume.
