lane usage Options

driving from the B4009 into town centre this morning I and two other vehicles pulled into the RH lane of the three and guess what - a driver in the centre lane happily pulls across turning right into the london road. lucky for him the van driver at the front let him go past but in a way I hope he gets a lesson one day in the shape of a large dent. The lane markings at that junction could not be much larger.

It really does pose the question as to why we have road markings in the first place ? Much simpler approach is the free for all principal ( affectionately known as the chaos theory ) .

In mitigation though road markings are, by definition , on the road and therefore obscured by the traffic . Information signs tell us everything bar the things we really need to know .

The answer is for local drivers to impart the necessary knowledge to the less informed in the traditional manner of using the horn or winding down the window and shouting " you f******g s****d w*****r get in the right lane "

One finds that most drivers are quite grateful for this bit of helpful advise and reciprocate by the waving of 2 fingers which I am lead to understand is universal sign language for ********* .

The obvious thing to do is keep your eyes peeled and allow people to change lane if necessary. I think the lane markings are a poor way to direct traffic, often they only confirm to you that you are in the wrong lane. Instead of having road numbers, I'd rather it just said Thatcham, Town, south, north, etc...

Come to the A34 roundabout on the B4000 at Stockcross in the morning and watch all of the numpties getting in the right hand lane to go straight across the roundabout to go into Newbury (its a single carriageway exit, No merge )

Apologies if I'm thinking of the wrong place but isn't the right lane for the A4 west and 339 north, middle lane London road and 339 south and left A4 east and 339 south

I guess you are talking about the A4 (from Hungerford) roundabout which goes over the A34 where it drops down to Speen.
Traffic coming from Hungerford is directed into the right hand lane to go towards Newbury where the Stockcross road joins. The Left hand lane, as far as I remember, is for cars turning left to Stockcross and left onto the A34. As you drive across the bridge over the A34 to the next roundabout, you are again directed into the right hand lane for Newbury. Thye left hand lane is for the traffic onto the A34.
So, unless I have got it wrong, You have got it wrong. Please feel free to put me right.

It's all very well saying don't get wound up, but you do though. Through someones inconsiderate stupid attitude or lack of intelligence, serious injury or death may be caused.
It's not rocket science to follow a lane, cars do have steering wheels after all!

For a thread on 'lane discipline' I thought this Youtube video would be appropriate as it shows that motorway Middle Lane and Outside Lane Hoggers can eventually get caught out...

(For the easily offended it might (would definitely) be advisable to turn the volume down as the lorry seems to be driven by Chubby Brown )

It's not rocket science to follow a lane, cars do have steering wheels after all!

Well if 'I' and many others can see the difference, then that says there are a few blind drivers!

So all the painted lanes have been a complete waste?

I wouldn't say so for the majority that get it right.

We could all just drive with a little more care and anticipation that you might get 'cut-up'. I'm not aware that there have been any or many bad accidents on the giratory due to lane-jumping.
