For those who complain about Newbury parking charges allow me to introduce you to Reading. In an act of out of character altruism,I volunteered to pick someone up from Reading station.Arriving in good time I parked as close as I could which was the Garrett Street car park.I walked to the station, met my guest, returned to the car,put my card in the machine and was charged £5 : 50 pence for 40 bloody minutes maximum.
This is not a car parking charge,it's downright robbery. This is a rant and I make no apologies.

It's only 5 quid return on the train.

I presume it is an attempt to make you do that rather than take the car.

A couple of months ago I had a three month contract in Reading. It was far cheaper to go by train than drive. Apart from that the company I was working for paid for me. laugh.gif

Dread to think what it must cost to park a car at Reading Station all day, then. I remember somebody telling me it was over 12 quids years ago. As the train operators, nationally, increasingly find themselves short of money, no doubt hiking up car parking charges will be an easy option for them.

When I was working in Reading I was talking to somebody who lived further out - Basingstoke I think - and parked in in Bracknell and took the bus or train in because they were unable to park in Reading itself.

Why would they go to Bracknell from Basingstoke to get to Reading? doesn't make sense, you can get a train from Basingstoke to Reading.

Did you check the parking rules/charges signs before you decided to leave your car there? it doesn't cost that much in the Oracle. maybe you parked in an all day car park.

I did say I think it was Basingstoke, however, wherever they were from they drove to Bracknell and parked up there and caught the train or bus in. It was cheaper to do it that way.

Let the train take the strain I say, the roads are a shambles in rush hour. Hey and one day you never know we might even have nice clean and new trains with air conditioning that works to travel on. rolleyes.gif

Still it should have been 2.40 not over a fiver for '40 bloody minutes' (lordtup 's words).

The rail companies franchise out the car parking to other private companies at most stations.

I must admit I drove into the nearest car park and attended to my business.I am sure there are notices informing of charges but I didn't actually see one.

To be honest nobody reads them until it is too late. Once people find a parking space they just accept it and pay up.

So they might do - but who do you think has the whip hand in setting the charges?
