I agree Simon; but then I supposed there is heated and heated laugh.gif I also agree that there are different degrees of Political correctness. To be honest I think this is a good debate; whether we go off topic or not.

Wondering off topic isn't in itself a problem, it is that arguments end-up in rows about Nazis. tongue.gif

I might come access as a liberal lefty, but I am far from it. I often have similar opinions (often that's all they are because I lack indepth knowledge about some things), but I test the opinion buy playing devils advocate.

It was a thing I learnt at school, a tutor asked the class to divide themselves into two groups - for or against some subject. We then had to form an argument why we decided as we did. We were then all told to swap sides and we had a debating competition to see who could best defend the principle which one wasn't sympathetic with. I think it enables one to better understand things, if one is prepared to see the other side of an argument.

Another thing I have learnt to do is take whatever I read and whatever I see on TV, including the more trusted stations, with a pinch of salt. They never give one the full story so one can make an informed judgement.

The first thing I'd do if in charge, make school dinners more or less compulsory. At this time, table manners would be taught. I believe good manners in life, start at the table.

That is a fantastic idea Iommi, and would be really easy to impliment.

When I was as school and we misbehaved we had to stand under the clock in the canteen for the whole hour. Standing there with 200 people looking at laughing at you teaches you quickly not to do it again.

Small things like these will help in the discipline.

Going back to the topic, maybe there could be some reward scheme for the kids, do so many hours charity/community work durning the holidays and earn points which can be transferred into rewards at the end of the summer maybe?

What is wrong with that? Nobody is going to say I support them? Well, I don’t think so. I am sure most people on here would be in agreement with one another on this topic. If not then that would be a topic on its own to explore! laugh.gif

I agree totally.

Yes, but whatever I read I try to read an opposing view.

Problem is no-one is willing to pay for it. Budgets are cut & cut again as Politicians know that the way to power is through lower taxes.

Lifestyles have changed. I bet fewer than 10% of people these days sit at the dining table for a family meal.

That is true. When I brought my kids up we all sat at the dinner table at meal times. We never ate in the sitting room, always the kitchen.

I agree, but I feel deeply this is the route of where things started to go wobbly. I would add, that this is most important for infants, rather than senior school. School dinners back then were of relatively good quality as well. I'm thinking also that this is a contributing factor in poor diets we accept these days.

Social ills, in no particular order and some of these serve as metaphors.

TV (esp. 24hr) - I understand It's bad affects on society has been proved, albeit unscientifically.
Microwaves - Food is too easy to dismiss as unimportant.
Superstores - See above.
School dinners - The lack off often provides a poor start in life.
Secularism - It is fine to remove belief in God from the school curriculum, but it should be replaced.
Internet - Like all things, too much of a good thing can be bad.

The kids know the law protects them and so they can verbally abuse anyone they want to.
This includes a young chavette who called me a '4 eyed pr**k' when I was minding my own business when walking down Station Road recently. What could I have done? If I had said anything or tried to reprimand her I would have been the one in the wrong. You just have to take it and walk on by.

The Police are not interested in 'petty' offences such as this as they know that no prosections will take place and theres is now a target driven environment as well.

I really do despair at the way things are going. We are in the process of dismantling all that used to be good with GREAT Britain and replacing it with a section of society that will never work, will scrounge on benefits all their lives and willl contribute nothing absoultely nothing to the future. I for one don't want to pay for them anymore through my taxation.

May I suggest a remote Scottish island to send them too with no society or infrastucture. then they can live life like the feral alleycats they are??

Do you think in all honesty that sending them to some rural idyll is fair on the island or it's wildlife.
The answer is the return of the cane.Nothing like 6 of the best to concentrate the mind.
Or am I just being a retrospective old fart
