I was talking to a manager of one of the stores in the Kennet Centre and he told me that their rent is going up forcing some companies to leave. Sky, which was sold in the main walkway, had to leave because of the rises. Others are also leaving.

Should rent prices rise in a recession, stay the same or go down? Is the Kennet Centre right to put up their rent at this moment in time?

Real Adam Smith stuff - they'll charge what the market can bear and its generally the landlords in the lead. I suppose one good thing, if they really are putting rents up - they at least can see an end to the recession.

Then they are more gifted than a lot of economists.

I've read Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations" years ago.

Come on GMR - I know you love to make out you have some 'hot' gossip - name some names at least.

As to the KC - they own the place, they can do what they like.

Does a shop owner not the right to put up his prices? This is what a shop owner should do when costs go up. Pass it along the line.

Or maybe go out of business?

Or never bother to turn up in the first place.

I was the assuming shop owner wants to stay open. Having a shop isn't normally something one does for the **** of it.

You were suggesting putting up prices to meet costs i.e.rent.
You can only put up your prices so much.
If too much no one will buy and you will go out of business.

Of course.

For some reason I doubt we are talking about huge increases here. The KC is on a ft² basis one of the cheapest places in town to have a shop.

Actually as the source is GMR, I doubt there is actually anything to talk about......

GMR seems to be saying that some tennants are not going to attemp to even put prices up. They are just packing up.

What is there to name? I am sure any shop owner in the Kennet will tell you the same if you ask. If you know differently then say.

Excellent, I am really happy for them.

Then if they do they do. I just happened to make a comment on what I was told.

It doesn't matter who the source is; it is either true or not. And that can be easily checked. Just ask somebody in the Kennet Centre.

More made up stuff eh GMR?

Your usual answer 'it was what I was told'.

I am only repeated what I heard; which can be easily checked. And I wasn't suggesting anything other than repeating what I heard.

If it was made up then other shop owners will refute what I said.

And as for my "usual answer"; if that is the case then that is the case. It is no big deal or worth getting your knickers in a twist. If you've got evidence to contradict what I said then lets hear it. Otherwise shut up!!

It does matter actually.

You are making claims that some retailers are about to move out of the KC - which ones?

How can I contradict such a wide open statement?

In the bigger scheme of things; no.

I am repeating what I was told; which can be easily verified. As for which ones; I was only told about one which I said in the main post.

If you can't then don't try. Just accept, however, if it bothers you go and check. It isn't worth getting upset about. May I suggest that you get a life instead of worrying about petty things?

Why should I have to 'go and check' your statement? Is a claim of retaliers having to shut up shop petty?

You said - and he told me that their rent is going up forcing some companies to leave which has now become - As for which ones; I was only told about one which I said in the main post.

so we have gone from you alluding to at least two retailers leaving the KC to infact none leaving other than a small stall which has been replaced.
