Two personal encounters in Newbury. As it's a public forum I'll leave the names out - rather not get sued
One was in a country pub, I'd ordered a baguette (which was great) but after working through the side salad I noticed that there was a slug crawling underneath one of the lettuce leaves. Revolting. I took it back in and they offered me another but how anyone has an appetite after that I'm not sure. I did however accept the free pint they offered instead (as well as half off our tables bill inc. alcohol).
Second was a Christmas Eve experience. We'd bought some broccoli from a local supermarket. My Mum was in the kitchen preparing it when we heard a scream. We dived in there and she pointed at the veg. At first we didn't see anything until one of the two stalks moved. It was a 6 inch long locust!! We took it back into the store (visitor too) and one by one showed it to the staff until they screamed and got their boss who screamed and got their boss and so on. Eventually the regional manager (who was on a Christmas check in) came over, apologized, explained that it must have survived some sort of freeze drying process in Spain and gave us enough vouchers for a big weekly shop. And left me with a story to share on a forum
