Before my barge holiday last year we went to a riverside pub for lunch, I found an alive caterpillar in my chicken ceaser salad after eating half of it!

Put me off restaurant salad's for a while.

Two personal encounters in Newbury. As it's a public forum I'll leave the names out - rather not get sued smile.gif

One was in a country pub, I'd ordered a baguette (which was great) but after working through the side salad I noticed that there was a slug crawling underneath one of the lettuce leaves. Revolting. I took it back in and they offered me another but how anyone has an appetite after that I'm not sure. I did however accept the free pint they offered instead (as well as half off our tables bill inc. alcohol).

Second was a Christmas Eve experience. We'd bought some broccoli from a local supermarket. My Mum was in the kitchen preparing it when we heard a scream. We dived in there and she pointed at the veg. At first we didn't see anything until one of the two stalks moved. It was a 6 inch long locust!! We took it back into the store (visitor too) and one by one showed it to the staff until they screamed and got their boss who screamed and got their boss and so on. Eventually the regional manager (who was on a Christmas check in) came over, apologized, explained that it must have survived some sort of freeze drying process in Spain and gave us enough vouchers for a big weekly shop. And left me with a story to share on a forum smile.gif

I was eating a KFC 'bucket' once - many years ago. Munching away I looked at the portion I was half way through & noticed an odd, funny coloured piece inside the Colonel's secret batter. Closer examination showed it to be what looked like a soft grey walnut. It was a chicken brain, complete with spinal cord.
Never eaten there since, but I guess it does show that the meat isn't overly processed.....

My Grandmother who was a young mother providing for her children through WW2, always told us of a local butcher (no names on here!) who went to court accused of selling human meat during that time ohmy.gif . Don't know if it was true, but generations of us have avoided the shop ever since!!!

Bringing things up to date – I suppose we must be grateful to Europe for insisting on absolute accuracy for food descriptions. At least Hot Dogs are Hot Dogs…
