Apparently this is a law which has already been passed and may come into force in 2011. Looks like a way to make more money because you'll have to take a retest every 10 years ( I assume that includes evryone) as well as having medicals and eye tests, meaning yet again the law abiding and honest will be hit in the pocket.

The A2 motrbike license goes and is replaced by a tests at 17, 19, 21 and 24 years, not sure if this only applies to new riders

I believe the UK can tweak this if they wish

After doing a 10 minute bit of research, it seems a re-test isn't a part of the directive for car drivers. We will have to re-new our licences, but there is no mention of a re-test.

I believe that we already have to renew the photocard driving licence every 10 years. But this doesn't involve a retest. I don't think there are any plans to make us resit the test every 10 years. I think the idea of 10 year renewal is basically to update your picture (although obviously at our cost!).

With regards to the bikes, I think they are saying that the minimum age for direct access will change from 21 to 24. So if you are over 24, you will be able to sit just the direct access test to qualify to ride any bike. However, if you want to ride the bigger unrestricted bikes before the age of 24, then there will be a series of tests allowing you to progress from moped (age 16), light bike (age 17), medium bike (age 19) to large unrestricted bikes (age 21).

It looks like this went for consultation to motoring groups, etc. So I'm not sure what the final outcome will be. If I've got this wrong - please shout!

There's some more info on this on the DFT website - http://www.dft.gov.uk/consultations/closed/thirddirective

If it did, that would be a bit unfair on those with photocard driving licences. I have an ordinary one (no photo) and therefore don't have to renew mine (at least, not until I'm 70!)

Photocard driving licenses have always had to be renewed every ten years, the dates on the license indicate this.

I've got an old licence so I don't have to renew until I am 70.

Doesn't everyone have the old style licence? I thought the photo-card was additional to it?
