Our area which should have had collections 1 day(23/12) early on Wed before Xmas suffered no collections, like others.

Today's announcement on the BBC Local News site from their contractors is piffle however!

Christmas bins emptied at weekend
Refuse collectors in West Berkshire are to carry out extra weekend rounds into the new year.

Veolia Environmental Services, which manages waste for West Berkshire Council, is to make extra Saturday collections.

The council has issued households with a calendar to help residents remember the amended collection days.

Many collections will take place earlier than normal. Services will return to normal on Monday 11 January. rolleyes.gif

Tracey Reilly, general manager of Veolia Environmental Services, said: "Previous changes to collections over bank holidays were very successful and we are pleased to be able to continue this improvement to the service over Christmas and the new year.

"It means the collections will only alter by a day or two, so that residents don't have to wait for two weeks or longer for their waste to be taken away."

Our delay (+ for many others) is far more than few days, ie instead of Wednesday before Xmas, is now day after New Year's Day! sad.gif Far more than one or two days late. However I gather districts with fortnightly collections are telling residents that if their normal day falls on a holiday day, they have to wait another fortnight; very handy this time of year.

Given the recent weather, hardly unexpected that there are now delays.

Information was posted daily at 08.00 on the council website.

That's OK for me and thee but what about folk who do not use their computers every morning at the crack of sparrowfart?

I was scheduled for Thursday 24 and now see that my next collection of general rubbish will be 4 Jan and recyclables on 11 Jan which is 4 weeks after the last collection.

OK Have car, can travel, can cope. But not everyone is so fortunate.

We only get ours emptied every couple of months anyway. And we don't get any recycling collected at all. I do think this new crowd keep the streets looking a lot cleaner than they used to though.

I thought Viola emptied bins 52 weeks of the year, maybe a day or two early or late during bank holidays. It now seems I will have to wait for 2 or 3 weeks. Yippee I will get some council tax back! laugh.gif

We were due an early collection last week, but the fact that our road was an ice rink until yesterday prevented that. hoping they do a collection on first day back to work, Tuesday.

I live above a shop which doesn't have "traditional" access, we can't put wheelie bins out as the only place we could put them is in the middle of the road or car park. Biffa service the shops and we just put ours in with theirs and to be honest it's not a problem.

Oh, sorry - didn't realise there was any difference. Mine hasn't changed, anyway: 1 day earlier week before Christmas, 1 day later week after Christmas.

Don't the shops pay Biffa to collect their rubbish? My understanding is that shops don't have collections direct rom the council.

Yes they do and correct, they don't.

As far as poor old Veolia goes, I bet most of you are on holiday all this week so give a thought for the bin men who probably have families and want a little time with them and also if one looks on the gritting threads, why should they risk their lives on an untreated icy road with a possibly out of control huge truck just because some of you can't deal with your rubbish for a couple of weeks.
I always thought we did our best to be charitable at Christmas.

Poor old Veolia..., while many are on holiday, many are not, especially those places we all like to visit when it is holiday time. All these places that have to be stocked by big lorries and manned by people who have to navigate these icy roads also.

I see your point, but Veolia employees are not alone.

Perhaps we ought to abolish fixed bank holidays then...

I don't see a reason to do that. Only that their value is appreciated.
