I saw a letter today in the NWN about someone who would like to see Newtown cemetery torn down and levelled and turned into a park remarkably similar to the one a street away at the city playground. He would like to hear from people who agreee with him. (but not the ones who don't, presumably). The task of teaching children to behave respectfully in a cemetery seems a bit too arduous for the bloke, too. Anyone who wants to agree with him, his email has been printed in full in the letters page. Any opinions here? (surely not...)

His last campaign was to save the Monkey Bridge, which somehow involved painting it and renamng it the Rainbow Bridge.
And while he is campaigning to make Newbury beautiful (and green) he owns one of the tatty eyesore narrow boats moored down past West Mills. |

It reads to me as turn it into a park and allotment.
I do have a certain sympathy with his cause. As a relic of Newbury's history it should be preserved but it does need a considerable amount of work done on it. Sadly, maintainence does have a cost and there has to be a balance. Of couse he and any like-minded individuals could organise themselves into a work party and spend a weekend tidying the site up. |

Not that bastion of green England and friend to all slugs everywhere Stan Green? Surely not the same Stan Green who cycles round Newbury on pavements, the wrong way up one way streets and through red traffic lights........?

As far as I remember, the Vaness sisters used to live in a house in the grounds, and took in injured wild birds.

I hope they don't turn into a car park or something rubbish like that. I live opposite the cemetery, and that would be awful. If they just kept it up and looked after it, it would be fine. Plus it would be sad for it to go, for local historians and genelogists.

I agree, i used to live just where the old St. Johns primary school was, and used to walk past the cemetery pretty much everyday. Wasn't it closed because of badgers/moles burrowing or something? |

If it was turned into an allotment the vegetables should grow well. All that fertiliser thats been added to the soil over the years should make it very rich in nutrients.
