Sadly, our grand old man of astronomy died today. He certainly inspired me.

For me, growing up in the 60's, Jack Hargreaves was my hero.
One program showed him explaining how to grow watercress. He cut a section out of a riverbank, which would allow water to pass through, but not displace what had been planted.
He put some cuttings in and just left it there. Within a few days, a good crop was well on it's way.

Twenty years on, I built a pond, used his methods, and have had watercress on tap since then.

It's a pity we couldn't be allowed to mourn someone who has contributed so much to astronomy, without people raking up his right-wing political views. That's for another day, surely.

Chris Lintott will take over, I'm sure.

It isn't a rant either. I don't think most people care where anyone posts.

I think DSB was being clever. Drawing a parallel between Moore's job and his slightly eccentric views. Perhaps TOO clever for some.

I did pick up on the song. But I didn't know till today that he had eccentric views. Not really bothered.
It is wonderful to see the night sky in some parts where there are no village security lights. my choice
would be the Milky Way... I am sure an old poster would agree. I see a Hubble picture of a galaxy(OOPS another one)
far far away. Gosh. Over the page and there is a close up of Mars. I can't think of anymore rubbish.

He was elderly and had stored up bad feelings.
Just as my neighbour's brother died on Thursday night @61. Not elderly and resigned to fate.

Yes Andy Capp. as many do, he never made much money from his various ventures.
He and I often said Hi. as we passed.

A sad loss to our society. He was a great inspiration to star gazers.

The words of that song always remind me of the words from another song.
