Sadly, our grand old man of astronomy died today. He certainly inspired me.
For me, growing up in the 60's, Jack Hargreaves was my hero. One program showed him explaining how to grow watercress. He cut a section out of a riverbank, which would allow water to pass through, but not displace what had been planted. He put some cuttings in and just left it there. Within a few days, a good crop was well on it's way.
Twenty years on, I built a pond, used his methods, and have had watercress on tap since then.
