We have had on plebiscite and that was in 1975 to see if we should stay in the Common Market. It was held by Wilson’s labour government. QUOTE 1. Should we be part of the EU? No. QUOTE 2. Should we keep funding the monarchy? I have no problems with this because if we never had a monarchy we would have to have something else instead and that would cost probably a lot more. QUOTE 3. Should the death penalty be introduced for proven child killers, police murderers, and serial killers? I would prefer life imprisonment with hard labour... second option death penalty. QUOTE 4. Should people on long term benefits who have no medical condition be made to do voluntary work to keep the right to have their benefits? It depends on the case; some people are out of work and want to work but can’t find anything; either because they are too old or have certain problems. But on the whole yes. QUOTE 5. Should school exams be re-designed with a new focus to indentify the 'bright' pupils rather than getting everyone to pass? It depends what you mean by ‘bright’ kids. Some kids who are regarded as not bright have excelled in other areas; thus considered bright within that scope. Some people who you consider ‘bright’ are actually thick as two short blanks. QUOTE 6. Should a proportional representation voting system be introduced? No as it would cause chaos; just look at Italy. QUOTE 7. Should we build more prisons? Yes. QUOTE 8. Should corporal punishment be re-introduced to shools? Yes. QUOTE 9. Should their be a cap on the numbers of immigrants that are allowed into the Country? There has to be because of room; that should also include people coming from Europe (which at present have a right to come here). QUOTE 10. Should the National ID card scheme be completely scrapped? Yes.

QUOTE (JeffG @ Aug 21 2009, 03:59 PM) Someone else (like me earlier ) posting in the wrong forum... I won't answer here and clog things up further. Why... this is for debate and the Newbury area; as these subjects concern people from Newbury then it is in the right place.

Your logic: A fish lives in the sea, therefore anything living in the sea is a fish. This an off-topic post on the topic of which forum this post should be in . The main topic is not Newbury-specific, it is a general post, therefore belongs in the other forum. End of. (I made a mistake with the A-levels post and asked the Mods to move it - so far, no action.)

I mean, where we write isn't going to affect our health or longevity. We still live in a fair and free society... even though we are writing on the NWN's forums. By the way; not everything in the sea are fish.... but everything in here are tadpoles.

Should the National ID card scheme be completely scrapped? (BTW, before you jump down my throat, I PM'd the Mod to get my post moved, and also mentioned this one - it was his decision.) - Yes.
- Yes.
- No. But this is predicated anyway on a No answer to 1. (Can't say Yes to 1 and Yes to 3.)
- Yes, definitely. Though if they are made to do it, it's not exactly voluntary, is it?
- Yes.
- Maybe.
- Whatever is necessary to prevent overcrowding.
- No. (Though I lived in fear of the cane!)
- Complicated one. For a start, any number should be based on net inflow (don't forget people leave as well). The number should be based on what the infrastructure can stand. And there should be a points system depending on what is needed.
- I have no problem with ID cards. They can be useful as long as it is not a legal requirement to carry one.

QUOTE (TallDarkAndHandsome @ Aug 21 2009, 07:12 AM) Why do we never have any in this Country?
I suggest the following referendum on a number of issues - a 65% majority would be needed to pass any such vote and associated change to the law.
1. Should we be part of the EU? 2. Should we keep funding the monarchy? 3. Should the death penalty be introduced for proven child killers, police murderers, and serial killers? 4. Should people on long term benefits who have no medical condition be made to do voluntary work to keep the right to have their benefits? 5. Should school exams be re-designed with a new focus to indentify the 'bright' pupils rather than getting everyone to pass? 6. Should a proportional representation voting system be introduced? 7. Should we build more prisons? 8. Should corporal punishment be re-introduced to shools? 9. Should their be a cap on the numbers of immigrants that are allowed into the Country? 10. Should the National ID card scheme be completely scrapped? Please vote as you would and we will have a 'straw poll' Not even sure if I'd be eligible, but as it's a forum 1. No 2. Yes 3. No 4. Yes 5. No 6. No 7. Yes. 8. No 9. Yes 10. No

QUOTE (TallDarkAndHandsome @ Aug 21 2009, 03:12 PM) Why do we never have any in this Country? Because we live in a democratic system where governments are elected from a political party to represent your views in their decision making. The general election is a "referendum". You get what you vote for. Read the party's manifesto before voting to ensure they will represent your views when decision making. That's how it's supposed to work anyway. Sometimes, as in the EU referendum promised, they either lie or change their minds.

1. Should we be part of the EU? Yes, I agree in principle, but not in the form we have. 2. Should we keep funding the monarchy? Yes, but they shouldn't profit. 3. Should the death penalty be introduced for proven child killers, police murderers, and serial killers? No, not for the time being. 4. Should people on long term benefits who have no medical condition be made to do voluntary work to keep the right to have their benefits? Yes, provided it is cost effective. No-one should expect something for nothing 5. Should school exams be re-designed with a new focus to identify the 'bright' pupils rather than getting everyone to pass? Yes, but expand this to include trades and other skills. 6. Should a proportional representation voting system be introduced? No, it seems pointless. 7. Should we build more prisons? Yes, if we need the space, but some people are in prison who perhaps shouldn't be. 8. Should corporal punishment be re-introduced to schools? Yes, the little b*stards. 9. Should their be a cap on the numbers of immigrants that are allowed into the Country? Yes, we should have a population policy and demography, so that we know how many and what type. 10. Should the National ID card scheme be completely scrapped? Yes, the government are unreliable
