Hello all,
I'm a student returning to Newbury for summer and am finding genius ways to fund myself before going back to uni in September. I've come up with a great service that I think most people want but aren't too sure on where/how to get it.
Basically, I convert your old home videos to DVD. It seems most families have boxes of home videos from the 80s and 90s but with the decline of VHS they're just gathering dust and don't get watched. By transferring this footage to DVD I can significantly improve the picture/colour quality but more importantly ensure it's on a format that won't become dated. I package them very neatly with whatever typewritten information you like, as well as putting menus in the DVDs to make navigation easier. Obviously if you prefer I can put it on memory stick/video CD or whatever other formats exist.
One of the reasons I'm offering this service is that I had such a frustrating experience finding it myself. It seems no companies offer it at a decent price, and to do it yourself you have to buy and set-up all sorts of hardware/software that don't like working with each other. Being a bit of an editing enthusiast, it was worthwhile for me so I may as well take advantage of the position. Whether it's one, two or fifty hours of old memories you have lying around, it's well worth getting them updated to a digital format. One advantage that springs to mind is once you have digital copies, you can duplicate them to friends/relatives with relative ease.
If you're interested please email me at homevideovault@gmail.com. I am based in Newbury so will have no problem collecting materials from you. Just say roughly how many tapes you have in mind and we'll go from there. Spread the word too :-)
All the best

True, but newburytoday is one of the only local forums I know of, and I need to get word out in the area. If it were a shameless plug of a new 'business' I'd understand, but this is just one person trying to do something a little creative over summer. It's hardly cold calling, or whatever the internet equivalent is. If you're not interested, ignore this thread, I just think a lot of people will appreciate what I'm offering.

QUOTE (Strafin @ Jul 22 2010, 07:54 PM) At the risk of sounding grumpy, is this in the spirit of the forum? I know some posts have been a bit "boisterous" lately and there have been complaints, but I really think that advertising your business on here is a step too far. Anyone agree or am I over reacting (my judgment lately has been poor to say the least). You are sounding grumpy Strafin! It might be of interest to people.....

If you are trying to start a business, of any sort, there are the correct channels to go through to advertise your wares, just like any business has to - yes it will probably cost you money. Nice to see you are a true student and expecting something for nothing. There are also many professional companies that provide this service so it hardly new and original. Or just use your old VHS (or buy one for a fiver off ebay) with a scart lead to your dvd and job done. Why would we spread the word anyway, we don't know you, you may be a thief, conman, or just bleedin' rubbish at what you do

I think the OP is just an enterprising young person trying to earn some extra cash. The service he/she is offering is one that I'm sure many people would use, especially some more mature folk who cannot grasp modern technology! Security is however, an issue, some references from an ex tutor or likewise would be wise. wrt to data loss, tapes are actually quite hard to destroy completely and a few seconds of lost footage is surely a risk worth taking to have your precious memories watchable and copyable ( )? wrt to whether this is a suitable post for this forum, I suggested to admin a while ago that we have another category for general/miscellaneous posts such as items for sale, requests for information etc. etc. and they said they had had the same thought and were considering it. So come on admin - let's have that extra category please? Just my 2 pennorth

If he/she was offering something unique then it may be worth a mention on a forum. Surely this is not the place to advertise your business (which is what it is if he/she is charging for this service, if it's free then sorry I misunderstood). I think you will find this forum/website does have the facility to advertise you wares - just have a look to the right (and up a bit!)

Good lord. Why all the negativity folks? If this is an honest post (OP), then fair play to the student for actually wanting to do something with his/her time to expand an interest, and make a few £ for his/herself at the same time. People are moaning about this person wanting to charge money doing something useful. I don't get it. The same people would also be moaning if this person was out setting fires to bins, drinking in the graveyard during the day, stealing from little old ladies, stealing from you, adding extra graffiti to Newbury. The list goes on. If this is a genuine thread, then fair play! Yes, some of the more tech savvy users may well know exactly how to convert VHS to DVD with one swift flick of the wrist, but there are others who don't and won't know where to look to find out. I'd ask the OP to tell us some more about his/herself. **grumble over**
