What genius thought it would be a good idea to close a lane of the A339 through Newbury at rush hour!?

I got to it at 7.30 this morning and it was choca....so I dread to think what it's like now.

I had to run for my train angry.gif

Not sure it is possible to dig up a road for essential work without closing it off.

Inconvenient though it may be.

Sorry sad.gif

The people who advertised that it was going to be closed for a couple of weeks for work on a gas main?

The traffic was quite light at 9:30. But it's probably best avoided while it's going on.

Oops, I can see this should have been in random rants.

Given that this is pretty much the only road through Newbury for most of the day, they can advertise it as much as they like but it doesn't make it any more avoidable if you need to use it.

Depending where you're coming from, there are two routes that avoid that stretch of road:

1. Newtown Road/Andover Road - Bartholomew Street - Market Street - Kings Road West

2. Greenham Road - Queens Road - Boundary Road - Kings Road

Though with the one-way bridge, (2) might get a bit clogged.

How would you suggest essential gas main repairs are carried out?

Quickly!

Transco, or whoever are doing this repair seem to think nothing of closing (parts of) a road for a couple of weeks, and if you drive past during the day, 90% of the time, there will be no workmen doing any work.

When I come in, in the morning (peak rush hour) the road workers are usually in the cafe having breakfast !!!! Also why didn't they carry out this work during the Easter half term when the traffic in Newbury seems to drop by half.

Should they not get a break?

Because the work wasn't scheduled for then I imagine. Remember, they move from job to job in different towns.

Of course they are entitled to a break but seems to me they are on permanent breaks they do half and hour and then off for breakfast. Lunch lasts two hours and they are gone again at 4 ! Wish my working day was so long......

How do you know this, if you're also not on a break watching them?
