During the olymics the Sunday trading hours are to be relaxed. I can, maybe, see the point in London, but will this entice you to spend more in Newbury?

I wonder if this is being used as a trial to relax the laws permanently?

I had to go into town last Sunday, first time in town for a couple of months, no danger for the church that I could see they were only a handful of people about. Most of those were in Northbrook street. Parkway and the Market Place were practically deserted and this was just before 12 o'clock.

I think it's stupid shops shut early on a Sunday. I'm sure there are people willing to work Sundays and if so, why are stores not open??
How many times have you forgotten something and by the time you go to buy it, it's 4:01 on Sunday and you end up bodging things together at the Co-op?

Saturday is my Sub day. I like the Meatball Marinara. I would not mind it on Sunday though.

As an atheist the old Lord's day observance do not come into play with me.
55 years of working 7 days a week when needs be earnt me quite a lot of money.
So long as the workforce are looked after well and are not forced into working
businesses should be able to operate when they want.

How would it?
If you don't wish it, then surely you can simply ignore it, stay in doing a roast/gardening/playstation etc.

Those laws based on religious grounds, or part thereof should be repealed or updated. Religion has had far too much a say IMO. Why should the other side of the fence be obligated to adhere to something based on an unproven series of events?.

I don't tend to shop on Sunday's. As find it the only day I can get together with friends and family as a group when most of them are not at work.

This is the point I was trying to make in the OP. Because the shops will be open longer on Sunday will people really spend more and save the economy? It may change your shopping pattern, but I doubt if we would increase our spending.

Unless you are one of Dave's people who are really wealthy and have had a nice little tax cut! rolleyes.gif
Not many people have residual spending capital at the moment that is the main problem with the economy. That is why Dave had to announce a possible tanker driver strike, that was never announced by the unions anyway, to get his economy figures up to prevent an official recession being announced at the end of this first quarter. The problems for politicians eh? Making the figures say what you want causes sleepness nights you know! I bet he must asks himself if it is all worth it sometimes? Still you have to make the millions grow somehow? rolleyes.gif

Cosmo, while interesting your idea do you think that the amount of extra fuel purchased will make up for a deficit in the billions? Not to mention it's not like the tax goes to the treasury straight away..

Well, yes. But still shops should be allowed to open if people are willing to work!

The current Sunday shopping hours is out of touch with a fast moving and modern society. All day Sunday shopping should be allowed; if it isn't wanted then the customers will vote with their feet. People have a choice; go or stay at home.

Is there still a restriction in Supermarkets on Good Friday?
The barriers used to be positioned to cut off access during certain times. For alchohol

I learnt my lesson. And have not bothered since, stock up with safe limits of course.
I am happy to acknowledge religions. And I can live alongside them.
I would find a dramatic turn to Puritanism a bit of a shock.

Still for my mind there was no God in Stalingrad, Murmansk, Somme or so many other conflicts.
