Newbury Today Forum _ Random Rants _ Forum Behaviour

Is there no way you guys can't all get on and stop point-scoring?

There have been some very heated and unkind exchanges on here recently and I'm afraid it just seems to be normally a handful of the 'usual suspects', often with very deep-seated prejudices either against authority, women or the law (or a combination of these!).

Some interesting and informative members have already stated their intention to leave - which is a shame.

Haven't you got more important things in your life than arguing the toss with 'anonymous' people on a local news website?

There is more to life guys! rolleyes.gif

Nope! Love it too much! However, I think that sometimes people think I and others take it more seriously than we actually do. I have had my fair share of heated spats but don't give or take anything personally. Sometimes I'm a bit over zealous though.

There lies the root of the problem of a text based forum. No facial expression as you get face to face. No body language so very open to misinterpretation.

Could do with a bit more light hearted banter amongst the informed comments and general discussion, rather than the too frequent personal digs. Perhaps it's the weather. Some of us have been trapped in our houses for longer than we want to be AND ARE GOING SLOWLY CABIN CRRAAZZY!

Plus, you can't smack them in the face to shut them up. wink.gif

Is that a public apology then? unsure.gif

You may not take things personally Strafin, but I'm sure you wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of some of your more barbed or vitriolic personal attacks. You are not alone of course, but you did raise your head above the parapet to admit guilt! wink.gif

As my dad always used to say, 'engage brain before putting mouth (or in this case, fingers) into gear'... Or, why not sleep on an argument - you may feel differently in the morning.

A great New Year's Resolution then for all you Mr Angrys of Newbury?

Failing that, get out your toboggan and go for a exhilarating slide!

Absolutely not Bill1. biggrin.gif

I suppose I'm personally just a little tired of the continual baiting and unpleasantness which erupts here from time to time. It would be good if everyone could remember that this is a discussion forum and not a bear pit !! wink.gif To be honest, resorting to personal insults actually weakens someone's argument in my view and prejudices me against their views in subsequent posts.

Whilst we and the majority of others use this forum to discuss local matters some have a different agenda and want to use it to get back at those in authority for perceived injustices done to them. Stick these people on Ignore when they overstep the mark and they'll soon learn that hijacking a forum for their own ends is not the way to behave.

It won't go on - he's got me on ignore wink.gif

Posted by: wabbit Jan 9 2010, 04:41 PM

I don't actually know how to Ignore people - can someone please advise!

What a wonderful idea though that I might be able to assign all those argumentative, self-opinionated types to Never Never Land. rolleyes.gif. Just wish you could do that in Real Life laugh.gif

Just a thought though - if I put all the tedious people on Ignore, will I have a blank page sometimes??
