One day something will sweep across the planet and that will be that. Read an article a number of years ago that purported that it may well have been a viral pandemic that wiped out the dinosaur, as their resistance was effected by climate change owing to the Chicxulub asteroid.
For asteroid read climate change and start worrying.

People may laugh but I just acquired 4 surgical face masks. Someone I know works at a company that supplies them and a major ahem online retailer just tried to buy all of them (50000) in one go...presumably so they could rake in a massive profit. They were turned down...

Very doubtful that a surgical mask would offer little more than basic protection from a virulent pathogen. I would be more concerned over the public's laissez faire attitude to seasonal flu vaccination than a hypothetical threat from yet another asian respiratory disease.

Mind you I have been wrong before.......... rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif

Nope you're right. And the flu will kill far more people than this ever will, as will smoking and obesity. Still, fills newspapers

Lose a couple of million and I doubt the authorities will worry unduly. The area under observation has a population of 60 million which is comparable to the whole UK, just imagine putting the whole country isolation. Least it would shut queen nicola up for a day or two. laugh.gif

Hello, thought you had gone on a long term sabbatical. As you can see we are still taking issues aired very seriously, especially those that effect my pension.
On the matter of coronavirus, anyone would think bubonic plague was rampaging across the planet. More people have died on Italian roads in the corresponding period than from this virus but no one suggests closing the autostrade.

Anarchy! Complete breakdown of society with the country being run by the military followed quickly by civil war and ultimate demise of the human race.
Or, Boris can come up with a plan and everything in the garden will be roses. One of these is scenarios is a banker as they say. cool.gif

Maybe, just maybe, those who traditionally vote Tory and possibly have a better standard of living tend to live longer than those who struggle and would probably support labour. It's by no means an exact science but it would be interesting to know if anyone has done research.

Now I suppose the left will accuse me of all sorts of heinous thinking and demand a public inquiry, but it's a thought.

And is this really why China went all out to contain it. I think that is a given but what is of more concern is the singular lack of intelligence gained as they age. When we allow parents to ignore medical advice on infant vaccination programmes or the elderly refuse the seasonal flue jab because they choose to listen to "social media" instead of using an element of common sense, it shows how "thick" society remains irrespective of age.

Now before some clever clogs points out the obvious on viral infections one should remember that TB was eradicated in this country and now it's returned, measles the same, but through sheer ignorant stupidity we are facing a new threat which may or may not wipe out all mammals on the planet, (it is after all a zoonotic virus which means having come across from animals to humans it is just as likely to be carried around by your pet pooch). And all this is down to ignorance when we have the knowledge at our fingertips to prevent such outbreaks in the first place.

The virus itself has no such problem and is quite happy to live anywhere. dry.gif

Darned foreigners, despite exiting Europe we are still getting the little blighters arriving on our shores. On a serious note I would be interested to know why Italy is taking such a battering. No obvious reason why and it's inhabitants supposedly have a good diet, (according to my GP anyway), so I can only conclude that they live in close proximity to their elderly relatives who are more susceptible.

But of course they haven't got a prime minister to instruct on hand washing technique. rolleyes.gif

Maybe there is something the health authority is keeping from us? We demand to be told that having covid-19 will lead to acute and prolonged diarrhoea along with an irresistibly appetite for pot noodles. God I hate secretive governments.

Present virus apart anyone who has a heavy cold or flue symptoms would be acting irresponsibly by spreading it in the wider population anyway. It is not as though one is committed to venturing out in this day and age when everything can be done via a phone. Personal hygiene is the key to control, but though they wheel out viral "experts" with impunity who tell you to wash your hands after being in contact with the outside world, I have yet to hear one empathise the need to wash before venturing out.
Mind you, apparently by having a house full of toilet rolls, this fellow can can be "persuaded" to visit one's neighbour instead. Bit like reading the bible four times a day to prevent the black death in the 14th century.

Not hearing much from the "open border" brigade at the moment. See the Irish republic has closed down but Ulster remains on a par with UK mainland, be interesting to see which returns to "normal" earliest.

Not hearing much from the "open border" brigade at the moment. See the Irish republic has closed down but Ulster remains on a par with UK mainland, be interesting to see which returns to "normal" earliest.

On a plus, toilet rolls seem to be returning to shelves. rolleyes.gif

Also on the plus side in 9 or 10 months time the NHS is going to be needing a **** of a lot more delivery rooms. No sport. Lockdowns. Baby boom. Will these babies be called Corona's rather than Boomers??🤣

No hand shaking, exaggerated kissing or the like in public, but behind closed doors the bunnies are gonna play. Now the BBC do not have to fork out for match of the day can I have my free licence concession back? wink.gif

We need serious press releases such as this to ensure the public is fully informed so as to avoid civil unrest due to misinformation. Next step is to prevent the over 70's venturing out. This of course means that those of us in this category will perish from malnutrition but that is a different set of statistics. Just watching the news with footage of long queues of shoppers rubbing shoulders with their fellow man. Now assuming that one of those has contracted the virus then all those who are in the immediate vicinity will carry it to the next group of muppets. Then we have a distressed lady who, though at her age she should be better informed, is topping up her bird feeder with bare hands while expressing concern over her position even though she is at more risk from an avian disease such as Chlamydiosis or Salmonella.

Anyway HM government will take care of us......Providing we, (you), are under 69.

Bit of difference between what is ostensibly a particularly nasty influenza and the might of the luftwaffe trying to bomb you out of existence. Lot of people who do not understand the workings of a virus are causing panic which is not at all helpful.
Best thing to do if you are reasonably fit is to carry on as normal and if you do catch it it will mean a few days in bed but at least you will have immunity if it returns next winter.
Incidentally one of the side effects of air raids was the increase in crime as houses were left empty and even if the the bomb missed it when the occupants returned home they could find their possessions gone.........And no welfare state to assist.

I was only joking.. as usual. And get where you are coming from. I have been taken aback a bit by the world response. I'm not quite sure that if only 1% were going to die we would have seen such a huge effort. My guess is they know something we don't.

.......I'm with you there.... ... and it's not tinfoil hattery time.

There's an undercurrent I'm not getting my head around. I really don't get the absolute enormous amounts of national reserves and resources that are being committed to tackling this if it really is a case of "Children don't get it, the healthy may get it but it'll pass in a few days and carry on. Even the fit elderly can contract it without keeling over popping their clogs." The global commitment is astounding. Is the pandemic modelling they're doing showing that there's a second, third or fourth tranche to this virus that will be even worse than the last? If we knew the truth then the panic at the bog roll shelf will be nothing to what might take it's place?

Life as we know it is going to take a very nasty turn over the next months, what with all the self-isolation requests which are going to see businesses big and small fold because of enforced closures and lack of footfall. There's more to this than meets the eye. If it really is the sort of Millennium Bug equivalent which was a lot of expenditure for an Apocalypse that fizzled out like a wet firework as the New Year bells struck then it has already screwed people's lives up.

It's troubling. ..Not that I really want to know if the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are just sorting out their riding gear and about to jump up into the saddle either....

1% is nothing, 75 million is an eye watering unacceptable number. All about the wording. I think the average annual mortality is about the same so it could be said that twice as many people will die at the moment.
Not sure what balm pot advised the government to close the schools but the idea of millions of kids running free and carrying the virus to all and sundry is more worrying in that the outbreak graph will peak far more acutely leading to complete social breakdown.

And I have been timing my runs to the shop (I go only when I actually need something) to when the kids are in school. Are they going to be kept in by stressed overworked parents? I doubt it.. bloody nightmare.

No new domestic cases in China yesterday. None. ...in the whole of China. Presumably they're still eating bats and exotic wildlife and things that spawn out in the rural peasant heartlands, but no new cases. Has this all been a ruse by China to set a wave of panic around the world by releasing a relatively mild biological agent to create a financial collapse of the West that they can then buy up...

According to whom? Having worked on official Chinese crop statistics in the past I can tell you that their numbers are debatable in that county level areas do not sum to the area of the province containing those counties and things of that nature. If the WHO are certifying these figures then they might be considered a bit more believable but even then they will still rely heavily on accurate local reporting and proper testing having taken place.

Difficult to get accurate figures from a lot of the world and to that end we may be on the brink of extinction or it will fizzle out by the summer. Even our statistics are at best hazy as a lot of those showing symptoms may not actually have covid 19 but seasonal flu and some may be carrying it without even realising. I still maintain that if UK mortality can be kept under 10,000 then all the panic has been uncalled for and has actually contributed to the problem by overloading the system. Just been to tesco along the london road and I was more at risk from irate drivers than possible carriers. Though those queuing at the tills do not seem to grasp the "6 ft" rule.

Shape of things to come. Imagine what it would be like if the threat was real. The powers that be should have foreseen this, remember what it is like at xmas when the shops close for one whole day, but they seem powerless to do anything other than appeal to their better nature. Might as well take on a polar bear with a toffee hammer. If their mountain of food goes off they will just go back to the shop and empty it again. To be honest they should issue ration cards which would solve the problem before anarchy breaks out.

Quod est demonstrandum as they say in posh circles. I have fired off a couple of emails to those who can bring pressure in order to get the government to take the situation by the scruff of the neck but they seem very reluctant. And 1st May is when the EU is meant to have its negotiating mandate in place (following agreement at the February 25 Council of the EU). That's going to change as well...

My thoughts exactly. If I go into the shop for a packet of X and is not in stock then I have to journey to another retailer and another until I actually source it. Now I may have come into contact with maybe a hundred people as opposed to 20 if it was on the initial shelf. They are just not thinking this problem out which is more worrying than the possibility of catching the virus because if they can't plan this how would they manage a real invasion?
The slight glimmer of relief is the thought that it could have been clown Corbyn running things.

Nice to hear a few positives amongst the crass behaviour being presented by the masses. Seems the "older" generation are far more phlegmatic in the face of adversity, maybe because we have seen it all before and survived, but a lot of the next generation are equally behaving in a sensible manner.

Debenhams was deader than a dead thing today so I suspect they won't be far behind. It's a real shame... I imagine it's costing them more in electricity to keep the escalators going than they're taking over the counter. Camp Hopson swiftly following? The demise of the High Street is ramping up a notch unfortunately.. The people living in the flats above the 'shops' in Parkway will soon be living above empty units. How long is going to take to recover from such a critical financial failure.

John Lewis to shut from Monday evening..

M&S foodhall was busy enough but the clothing upstairs was dead. How long before that area is closed off?

Time to make sure your supply of underpants and socks are in good order

Does seem a crazy situation when we have half the shops with no customers yet full stock and the other half with no stock and full of potential buyers. The further we get into this maelstrom the less confidence I have in Boris's handling.

It is not just the flu and I am taking it incredibly seriously. However, there is always humour in every dark situation and the following is very funny:

Seeing more and more wearing either dust masks or scarves over their faces and I just wonder how big they think this virus is? The media is still pushing the government line of self isolation with the proviso of food buying, accompanied by film footage of elderly shoppers standing shoulder to shoulder in a bloody long queue. The irony being that the shelves are empty anyway which means some have contracted the virus for no return. Still when they have taken to their bed they won't have any appetite anyway.

Does anyone know if supermarket online deliveries are operating "normally"? May be the preferred option to get essentials.

Stupid question I guess anyway. Received a communique from Sainsbury's earlier advising me that they will be open Mon/Wed/Fri at 0800 to 0900 for elderly/disabled/NHS workers etc to get essentials, so we will see how that pans out. Bit reluctant to visit with a high concentration but may be the only chance to get food.

Just contemplating how much I need to "disable" myself to qualify. laugh.gif laugh.gif

Yep. Expect they all have it. Do you know if the Chemist is still open? People need prescriptions or they'll have more than Corona to worry about!

I wonder what (not so) bright spark thought it would be a good idea to concentrate the most vulnerable group in their supermarket between 08.00 and 9? This group cough and splutter even on a good day so maybe they should re-think the strategy when a more viable approach is quite simple.
Met a bloke coming out of Sainsbury's yesterday with a trolley so laden that I doubt you could have added a cheese slice so I, admittedly in jest, asked if he had left anything for me, and the reply was hardly edifying. Seems we are fighting this on two fronts: the virus itself and the stupid public. Least the virus has no particular agenda to hurt us other than it does.

I can only speak for myself but fine at the moment thank you. Most are heeding official advice and staying in the house if practical but still an element standing in groups, (builders and in supermarket(s)). Some appear to think it is some form of holiday so they are having bar-b-ques or driving into the countryside. I have offered the service of my 12 bore to HMG in order to change their attitude. You know, shoot a few to persuade the many sort of approach, but as yet they haven't got back to me.

It's interesting how "stay safe" has become the new "take care". Or in other words try your best to take steps to minimise your risk of illness/death.

Speaking of steps. Just wonder if those public spirited souls who think it a good idea to go for a stroll in the sun will wash their hands thoroughly after they remove their shoes having probably picked up the virus on the sole of their footwear? Not to mention carrying it to their neighbourhood. If we ALL adhered to the government directive we may just have reached the peak, but with a percentage of complete cretins thinking it's a wheeze, we are in for a long summer. angry.gif

There seem to be a lot of people who are unclear of the directives. Here they are:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/full-guidance-on-staying-at-home-and-away-from-others/full-guidance-on-staying-at-home-and-away-from-others

1. Staying at home
You should only leave the house for very limited purposes:

shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible.
one form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle - alone or with members of your household.
any medical need, including to donate blood, avoid or escape risk of injury or harm, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person.
travelling for work purposes, but only where you cannot work from home.
These reasons are exceptions - even when doing these activities, you should be minimising time spent outside of the home and ensuring you are 2 metres apart from anyone outside of your household.

These measures must be followed by everyone. Separate advice is available for individuals or households who are isolating, and for the most vulnerable who need to be shielded. Where parents do not live in the same household, children under 18 can be moved between their parents’ homes.

The Government has also identified a number of critical workers whose children can still go to school or their childcare provider. This critical worker definition does not affect whether or not you can travel to work - if you are not a critical worker, you may still travel to work provided you cannot work from home.

Critical workers and parents of vulnerable children may leave the house to take children to and from school or their childcare provider.

Other critical public services – such as social services, support for victims, support provided by the Department for Work and Pensions, or the justice system – should be provided and accessed remotely whenever possible, but you can leave the house to access them when physical attendance is absolutely necessary. House moves should be delayed unless moving is unavoidable.

2. Closing certain businesses and venues
To reduce social contact, the Government has ordered certain businesses and venues to close. More detailed information and exemptions can be found here, including the full list of those businesses and other venues that must close, but they include:

pubs, cinemas and theatres
all retail with notable exceptions – these closures include clothing and electronics stores; hair, beauty and nail salons; and outdoor and indoor markets, excluding food markets
libraries, community centres, and youth centres
indoor and outdoor leisure facilities such as bowling alleys, arcades and soft play facilities
communal places within parks, such as playgrounds, sports courts and outdoor gyms
places of worship, except for funerals attended by immediate families
hotels, hostels, bed and breakfasts, campsites, caravan parks, and boarding houses for commercial/leisure use, excluding permanent residents, key workers and those providing emergency accommodation, for example for the homeless
Other businesses can remain open and their employees can travel to work, provided they cannot work from home.

3. Stopping public gatherings
To make sure people are staying at home and apart from each other, the Government is also stopping all public gatherings of more than two people.

There are only exceptions to this rule for very limited purposes:

where the gathering is of a group of people who live together – this means that a parent can, for example, take their children to the shops if there is no option to leave them at home
where the gathering is essential for work purposes - but workers should try to minimise all meetings and other gatherings in the workplace
In addition, the Government is stopping social events, including weddings, baptisms and other religious ceremonies. This excludes funerals, which can be attended by immediate family.

4. Going to work
As set out in the section on staying at home, you can travel for work purposes, but only where you cannot work from home.

With the exception of the organisations covered above in the section on closing certain businesses and venues, the government has not required any other businesses to close – indeed it is important for business to carry on.

Employers and employees should discuss their working arrangements, and employers should take every possible step to facilitate their employees working from home, including providing suitable IT and equipment to enable remote working.

Sometimes this will not be possible, as not everyone can work from home. Certain jobs require people to travel to, from and for their work – for instance if they operate machinery, work in construction or manufacturing, or are delivering front line services.

If you cannot work from home then you can still travel for work purposes, provided you are not showing coronavirus symptoms and neither you nor any of your household are self-isolating. This is consistent with advice from the Chief Medical Officer.

Employers who have people in their offices or onsite should ensure that employees are able to follow Public Health England guidelines including, where possible, maintaining a 2 metre distance from others, and washing their hands with soap and water often for at least 20 seconds (or using hand sanitiser gel if soap and water is not available).

Work carried out in people’s homes, for example by tradespeople carrying out repairs and maintenance, can continue, provided that the tradesperson is well and has no symptoms. Again, it will be important to ensure that Public Health England guidelines, including maintaining a 2 metre distance from any household occupants, are followed to ensure everyone’s safety.

No work should be carried out in any household which is isolating or where an individual is being shielded, unless it is to remedy a direct risk to the safety of the household, such as emergency plumbing or repairs, and where the tradesperson is willing to do so. In such cases, Public Health England can provide advice to tradespeople and households.

No work should be carried out by a tradesperson who has coronavirus symptoms, however mild.

As set out in the section on closing certain businesses and venues, the Government has published guidance on which organisations are covered by this requirement. Advice for employees of these organisations on employment and financial support is available at gov.uk/coronavirus.

At all times, workers should follow the guidance on self-isolation if they or anyone in their household shows symptoms.

The information just posted by Newres is useful but is primarily targeted at the obtuse end of society who know absolutely nothing about how a virus works nor care. I would certainly impose more draconian measures such as shopping limited to two visits per week and only one family member, NO outside exercise such as walking/running/cycling or driving to the countryside to exercise fido, and certainly come down hard on those idiots who behaving in an anti-social manner towards those who have to work in the present environment. Spoke to a bloke the other day who was off to see his estranged children, when I pointed out the obvious risk he said " I'm healthy and it doesn't effect kids". FFS!!! Every idiot like this is adding a month to the problem and god knows how many deaths.

Quite agree. If we had closed the borders (all flights, trains and boats) in early January and had deployed the Navy and Army. I would hazard guess though that if this had happened what the reaction would have been from Femi and all the #FBPE crazies...not to mention you....😂

Do not under estimate seasonal flu. The difference with this little chap is that it has not been, (identified), in humans before and therefore is being transmitted at will. Those who have previously been exposed to "normal" flu or have received the annual vaccination are less likely to "incubate" the virus whereas Covid 19 goes from one person to another quite readily. The only way to stop it's spread is quite simply to keep contact to a minimum and that may need the military to implement if the idiot brigade do not adhere to the directives.

Seems the problem is that the government does not want to be accused of implementing a police state which is why they are using the "pleasy please " approach but that is scant consolation to someone who has lost a family member.

Personally I would like to see a police state.

2.5 week lockdown. No one leaves any house.
250000 volunteers distribute food / medicines
At end of 2.5 weeks those 250000 go into 2.5 week lockdown.

Army / Police / Navy split over 5 weeks on street to enforce. Armed with tasers / firearms

Since when did a government do the "sensible" thing? An elderly couple walked past the house earlier coughing his heart up and obviously not local. Now if he is in the early stages of infection he has left a trail of the virus just waiting for the next living host to latch on to. Meanwhile the death toll keeps rising and all they can waffle on about is increasing testing. angry.gif

Our own government is responsible for our plight. They missed chance after chance to slow this down. Skiers at half term from France & Italy. Flights from China. All could have been made to quarantine for 14 days. Cheltenham, Liverpool v Atletico Madrid. They've been forced into doing the right thing every time. Testing is what's being forced on them now. But if you vote for a party that you know are lying to you, stripped of talent to deliver on those lies and really have only one issue, then you are a fool to think they are capable of handling a crisis on the scale we have now.

I know it's not the time to be critical but the NHS is not the all encompassing institution we would have believe. Eye watering incompetence is twinned with a dedication unsurpassed, and throwing money at as is the Labour want will not solve the ills only encourage continuation.

Can you imagine the utter chaos if Abacus Abbott and Co had been unleashed during this disaster? "We predict twenty million ventilators to be ready last week, just in time for our planned NHS push on diversity and gender awareness training month. I know it's not the time to be critical but the NHS is not the all encompassing institution we would have believe. Eye watering incompetence is twinned with a dedication unsurpassed, and throwing money at as is the Labour want will not solve the ills only encourage continuation.

Yes, I'm inclined to agree. Even before all this happened I had an appointment with a hospital consultant, which could just as easily have taken place with a video call to save all the wasted time travelling, parking costs and time waiting at the hospital.

About 6 months ago a friend of mine kindly ferried an elderly chap to RBH for an appointment, (and we know how traumatic that can be), and in the course of the consultation he asked where he lived? Newbury came the reply, "Oh I'm going there tomorrow to see another patient". Now this lies at admin's door but just one example of unjoined up planning.

You have a point but the same could be said about most large European Countries as well. It's almost as if borders work..

Explain what you mean? (I don’t actually expect anything coherent from you). We’re not in Schengen so we had more evident borders than any other country. USA has strict border control but have now surpassed official Chinese figures. It’s almost as if borders make no difference. The difference is government competence. Ours ignored the warnings, then came up with herd immunity and now has lost control.

Yes, what we really should have done is gone into a strict lockdown, just like Italy, France and Spain did, cos that would have stopped it in its tracks. Oh, wait, ok, as you were then.

Don't confuse the poor boy, still could be worse, if labour were in charge they would still be holding meetings about 'is covid 19 binary?' And setting up centres where people who are upset could go for legal aide to sue the Tories.

Finally, and not a minute to bloody soon, they have removed the exception "taking exercise" from the government directive on what is permitted. If they are that desperate to keep their muscles in shape try walking up and down stairs 20 times an hour. The Yanks are under no illusion regarding China's official figures and with the diplomatically challenged Donald in charge I can see a lot of flack flying before too long. China could lose 2 million and no one, except those concerned, would bat an eyelid so it seems this has a fair bit of mileage left.

I suspect the China death toll is the number of people that have died
as a direct result of it. Anyone with an underlying condition wont have been included... so they have a get out clause...

Bet a few leaders wished they had thought of that one. How many would have succumbed to seasonal flu anyway? Doesn't detract from the fact that these pandemics are always round the corner and when they do surface we are ill prepared. Can do nothing to prevent the virus emerging but we should have had a policy on hand to combat it.

About a week ago the BBC did a piece from Russia which included a doctor, (yes a doctor), who had set up her practice in a local church to see her patients because "god will not allow this virus to enter his house". I am not surprised it is getting out of control with this sort of thinking. The Hong Kong Flu outbreak in the late 60's killed around a million globally and I bet you would be hard pressed to archive a press cutting, but this chap has a great publicity officer and everyone is getting paranoid.

You can run but you can't hide. cool.gif Every time you venture out you prolong the chaos that is our lot. Now I am hoping you are sensible enough to exercise away from people but not near remote settlements. This is an almost impossible ask but contact must be kept to a minimum. Just because some government spokesperson says you can go out once a day doesn't make it an ideal but I appreciate that we need to buy food etc, so combine the two and reduce your footfall.
It would appear that the slight ambiguity between the government stance and the scientific one is that the government is frightened that if the conditions are too draconian then they may have civil unrest to deal with. Even this evenings tv news showed vast crowds on Brighton seafront which is giving the police an almighty headache.

Be under no illusion this virus is nasty and we all need to play our part. We can't kill it outside the host so the best we can do is stop it infecting people and that can only be achieved by distancing.

Not part of my knowledge but I would think that a runner or cyclist was more at risk of contamination than a walker. They are, after all, going through the viral soup quicker so anything in the atmosphere would still be at face level before drifting to earth.

The problem we’ve got is people confusing exercise with leisure. There are families filling the lanes and footpaths who’ve never walked further than the car park to Pizza Hut out for a stroll. The government needs to define it. Easy enough really. A brisk walk, a run or a bike ride. Maximum two or even alone only. For some, proper exercise is an important part of mental well-being. There’d have to be the odd exception - single parents for example, but it needs a bit more definition.

Not sure about that. We’re very lucky here though as it’s easy to get into the countryside for a run. I’ve stopped using the tow path as social distancing requires too much effort.

This is where an element of conflict comes into play. Now I walk to the shop(s), roughly 2 miles and therefore 2 back which is a nice stroll, but at the moment I am combining the two twice a week to stretch my legs and get food. This means I come in contact with those just out for a walk who otherwise drive to the shop. I have no alternative but a lot do. I am no more at risk of getting it than anyone else in this respect but I have no family to look after me if go down with it and I am certainly not calling an ambulance. So you can understand my frustration with those who are not taking it seriously. I am in no way inferring that you fall into this category but a section of society still does.

I’m in agreement to a large extent. People that don’t normally exercise are using the exercise justification to go out with the family. The fields near me are ridiculous at the moment. Filled with people I’ve never seen before. I kinda resent it but I realise I’m being a knob head and give myself a kick for being one. On the whole people are social distancing and behaving responsibly although there are exceptions. Families not going into single file when coming across people coming the other way is the most obvious example.

Fair play to you SirW for walking four miles to shop. Not many like to walk these days.

When you say "mask" I assume you are talking either surgical mask or N95 respirator? NOT the industrial dust mask obtainable from DIY outlets? Personally I would say that wearing the wrong type of mask is more problematic than none as it is a handy medium for the virus to latch onto before being ingested via the airways.

I have both N95 and FFP3 respirators. I bought them in January as I could see what was going to happen...just dont reuse them multiple times. I also gave some up to front line workers.

I haven’t been to a supermarket or town since this started. I’ve actually just ordered 100 surgical masks (smallest number available) which I’ll distribute among extended family but masks are only really effective if everyone wears them. That said I think I read a surgical mask is 90% effective as a defence.

As for exercise my current regime is 4 runs a week and a long country walk (10 miles or so) at the weekend. We walk from home I should add and once we get 1/2 mile away we barely see a soul but the first 1/2 mile is very busy.

I actually live not far from Northbrook Street so town is difficult to avoid for me but I also haven't visited a supermarket since the lockdown came into effect. I would rather pay a premium at a corner shop e.g. One Stop, Premier than have to queue to get in and make an active effort to stay 2 metres away from everybody else while I am shopping. However, I do accept that many people are not as fortunate as myself and have no real choice financially but to visit a supermarket in order to save their money.

I agree that the "local" shop is by far the better option but the problem arises with choice. They do not stock fresh meat, bread is very basic and at the moment fruit and veg is limited. It would seem that the great unwashed are still buying more than they need which only exasperates the problem. I am going to the supermarket later but if I am confronted with a queue then I shall turn round and it will be bread and pullet for dinner. rolleyes.gif

Not had reason to use it before now. laugh.gif Just got back from a brisk walk to Sainsbury's and it was almost deserted. Still one or two gaps in the shelves and a few idiots who seem to think it ok to take up 3/4 of the aisle with their trolley but with a few fancy footsteps picked up from a certain tv series hopefully I returned unscathed. Most of the walkers had a pooch in tow so not to many out just for the sake of it.

I have two friends who came back from skiing with it. Both now recovered. I think I have it actually, but very mild symptoms. Minor fever and minor aching but I’ll probably never know for sure. Whatever I’m condemned to 7 days self isolation and the fam isolated for 14 days.

To be truthful it’s very mild if it is Coronavirus. I’ve had worse colds. Hopefully we’ll have a test soon so we can know for sure whether we’ve had it and start to get back to normality before the economy is destroyed.

The severity of the illness is down to many factors including luck but hopefully you will now have resistance for the second stage outbreak should it happen.

Better tell HM to have the telegram boy on standby then. laugh.gif laugh.gif Having received Boris's billet-doux on dealing with the virus I am thinking that "was an awful lot of expenditure for a basic information leaflet", but at least no one can now plead ignorance. Still seeing groups, albeit small, wandering about enjoying the warm weather but not a single police car.

You have hit upon the problem that I have with the present government directive. According the HMG I can go out for a walk with my family. Now if my family has say 5 members then we take up all of the pavement. Single person travelling in opposite direction needs to step into the road to pass anyway before a six foot distance is implemented. He is then run over by a car which, because of the reduction in traffic, is travelling at terminal velocity. If your name is on the list you are going to get your papers.

Both Tesco, (London Rd), and Sainsbury's had queues snaking round the car parks today. Came back home empty handed so will try again tomorrow in the hope that they will all travel off to the coast/hills/somewhere else despite what is being asked.

Well that was fun. Got to Pinchington Lane Tesco at 0820. Waited in a queue of hundreds (some of whom were coughing vigorously). Finally got in the store at 0930. Home by 1030. Spent the last 1/2 an hour disinfecting shopping...

Well folks have been to Tesco and the queue is still there. One assumes that it is still yesterdays and just keeps getting topped up. So once again had a nice stroll for no return. Met 3 persons of the female type, (probably mother and 2 daughters but who knows), en route walking abreast,(no puns please), who made no attempt to give way to the extent that my shopping bag actually brushed her dress. angry.gif angry.gif
I have decided to pen a new diet book entitled "How to lose half you body weight without trying". Hope to publish along with my other best seller "Queuing for beginners".

Well it's a choice my friend.. starvation or Covid...I do think in a few weeks people will just give up and restart the lives they used to have and if they get it and die..then so be it. I'm high risk as someone who suffers from bronchitis due to whooping cough as a young un. In fact I reckon I'm 50/50 at best if I get it. BUT, we cannot impoverish the next generation forever to save people like me.. bit of a quandry.. bet Corbyn is glad he dodged this!!

Not sure who is the most pleased, Corbyn who is out of the front line or Starmer who has nothing to do aside from make the odd tv appearance and mutter a few words in the knowledge that nobody gives a **** what he says at the moment.
Relaxing of controls, whether official or not, would at least reduce the manic buying and thus level out the population density, but I can't see it happening this side of the summer solstice.

Haven't had either time or inclination to do the sums but I believe one is more likely to be hit by a meteorite than win the national lottery as it is considerably more so to have all life on earth destroyed by a virus than a nuclear holocaust, but in terms of public expenditure viral research is way down the list. It ain't sexy, it ain't cheap, but it sure as h**l essential.

Someone in the industry was interviewed on LBC yesterday and said they had 30,000 UK citizens register for this work but we need 80,000. So in an economic meltdown we can't get half the workforce we need. Houston, we've got a problem. In fairness to our people, geography will be a factor. The unemployed have to be in the right places.

I agree on both counts but it would be nice to know if a concerted effort is being implemented by those in charge to address the problem. Any form of harvest is based round the 3 fundamentals; 1. The crop is ready, 2, the weather conducive and the labour available. Now we have already witnessed the "speed" of HMG's response to most elements of this crisis and the last thing we need is a food shortage this winter owing to their ineptitude of management.

On a not dissimilar theme, I see certain factions are calling for the wearing of face masks to be made compulsory on public journeys yet hospitals and nursing homes etc are having problems sourcing enough for those who need it the most. Yet another example of how lack of correct information can "colour" the public's perception of matters. This virus, (and it's millions of cousins), is so small that the wearing of a face mask is akin to jumping out of a plane over the Pacific and hoping you land on an island. Even their official directive advocates using bleach on surfaces to "kill" the virus, yet it is not living until it enters the host cell so cleaning areas is more important than excessive use of domestos which will only pollute the waterways and add to our woes.

God I'm starting to sound like a grumpy old fart. rolleyes.gif

Except of course if they are unemployed they will be on benefits so can't work. I suppose they could come off benefits and stand around doing backbreaking work for the same (or less) money than they were getting laying on a sofa watching judge Judy. But hey! Tough choice.

I see they are paying between 11 and £15 /hour which is not bad for 40 hours work. No idea how that compares with the dole money but I would say it was a better option. The problem is, as newres pointed out, the proximity of work to worker. This is where those with the numbers come in.

Posted by: SirWilliam Apr 18 2020, 09:03 AM

Simple question to those who know as opposed to those who think they know;

It would appear that we are running very low on PPE equipment, so with half the country sat at home watching tv, how difficult is it to utilise workshops/factories across the country to manufacture the gowns/masks etc required?

Local WI groups are sewing scrubs and some school kids are knocking out face masks on their Dad's 3D printer but, assuming one can obtain the raw material, wholesale production of disposable gowns and gloves should be a doddle with a bit of guidance from the the top.

I may be over simplifying the solution but surely it is better to be seen trying to do something, even if it fails, than to wait for some mythical cavalry to come to our rescue?

Posted by: Turin Machine Apr 18 2020, 09:50 AM

A lot of this homemade stuff is so dangerous it should be illegal on the basis it can create a false sense of security, I watched an interesting video by a virologist and two nurses regarding masks and saying that pretty much most of them are useless. The virus is between 20 and 100nM across, 100’s of times smaller than bacteria. Basically, unless you have a properly fitted N95 mask which you cannot detect a strong odour through, face shields, dust masks, scarves, bandanas or whatever other bollocks are useless. The analogy was would you go into a room full of poison gas wearing these things? If not, what you’re wearing on your face is ineffective. Also, N95 masks are only good for about 3 hours. In extreme circumstances they can be treated with isopropyl alcohol for a few hours, autoclaved or treated with a UVC germicidal lamp. All of these techniques degrade the mask though and can only be used a finite number of times.
It's not as simple as it seems, also it's all pretty pointless as all PPE becomes ineffective if not used correctly and if you put on or take your mask off like Shinzo Abe does:

Image

... they may be almost useless even if they do stop you directly huffing it in your mouth and nose, because you're putting the stuff you're trying to keep off your face right onto your fingers, which you then use to rub your eyes, pick your nose, or yoink a bit of pork from between your teeth.

For the correct procedure, imagine that every piece of PPE has diarrhoea smeared all over the external (protective) surfaces.

Posted by: Turin Machine Apr 18 2020, 09:52 AM

Ahh, should have been a file pic of said Shinzo putting on his mask, never mind, you get the picture. Except of course you didn't. Sigh.

I can see your very relevant point regarding face protection but my understanding is that ALL PPE is in short supply which includes the disposable gloves/aprons etc. Now I may be wrong in that assumption but it would be nice to know and if that is the case then manufacturing anything to a given standard is reasonably straight forward. We can no longer expect the world to furnish us with our requirements.

Quite agree Sir Will. One thing that this has taught us is that globalisation is a disaster. We need to rebuild our manufacturing base and prop it up if necessary for the essentials. Loss making companies that are necessary in such a pandemic (pharmaceutical, PPE etc) should be underwritten by the public purse. It will cost a lot less than this sh1t fest. We also need to closely look at which countries we trade with and allow people in from.

We’d surely only rule out trade with a handful of countries? China, Russia, Saudi Arabia spring to mind.

On the globalization thing. Would you be willing to buy a British Leyland type vehicle? Personally I like the choice. I’d definitely like to see us consume more British produce, but I wouldn’t want to be confined to seasonal fruit and veg.

But we definitely need to get back to having capacity “just in case”. And I’m happy to pay more tax for that. But I’m not sure most Tory voters would be.

In answer to your questions

1. Any country which contravened the norms accepted as basic animal husbandry..so China, South Korea etc
2. Any country that has an abhorrent record on human rights so Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia etc
3.This means no flights (apart from diplomatic) and no entry to the UK for passport holders of these nationalities.
4. Any country that has an outbreak of any unknown virus.
5. I would be happy to pay more tax, but ONLY to prop up companies (where needed) for manufacturing that benefits the health of the population (so cars no but pharmaceutical and PPE equipment etc yes).

This is a watershed moment. The world will never be the same again.

I'm talking about the UK. We can't dictate policy to other countries. Hopefully air traffic should drop significantly now as well as people have been forced into Teams, Zoom etc and will now realise 80% of journeys are bot necessary. Apart from the awful consequences of this virus, it should also lead to a reevaluation of what we do and where we need to go.

I wouldn’t argue with much of that. One of the outcomes though ifs likely increased trade with our nearest neighbors. Now if we just had a free trade agreement and frictionless trade. laugh.gif laugh.gif

I knew that was coming... no reason not to trade with the EU though. Hopefully the imminent recession will focus the minds to agree a quick trade deal that is fiscally neutral and benefits both the UK and the EU.

This present little global strife has shown the stark reality of placing political ideology above the mass populace. If the EU had been run as straight forward free trade conglomerate then we would have handled this outbreak as a single unit with the best scientific advice leading it. But no, the leaders still wanted to lead.and look at the result.
Only yesterday tv footage from China still showed a "wet" market in the background with half dead animals trying to escape their torment. Do we deserve to survive as a species? If I had god's job for a day the answer would be very short.

60,000 die as the result of a viral outbreak and the world asks questions, yet only 50 years prior over 30 million were slaughtered during the Taiping Rebellion and the same world did nothing. Seems man is quite happy to slaughter each other with impunity yet are expected to unite when a common enemy presents itself. Poses the question "Do we really want to save lives per se or just our family and friends"? We all know that if the world lost half a billion inhabitants it would not be a bad thing, other than the logistical nightmare, but can you imagine the hysteria.

Looks like a good xmas day film. laugh.gif It's always been in the back of my mind that one day some psychopath, (eg. Hitler / Pol Pot / Genghis Khan), will unleash a viral attack on the world. Now I know there are a lot of reasons why that is not a good idea but I am talking leaders who are barking mad not just evil. But of course we don't have leaders who fall into this category do we. rolleyes.gif

She's in her element with a regular spot on bbc at midday and something other than an independent homeland to rant over. My guess is that soon OPEC will be making an approach to the world bank for a few $trillion to tide them over. Assuming Branson has left any in the coffers.

Admittedly they were slow of the mark but half of our ills are down to the fact that the populace were even slower to adopt the distancing rules. We have all seen it and we are suffering the consequences. This virus "loves" high population densities and because of the incubation period of between one and two weeks little wonder it's become so virulent.
Would Corbyn and co have handled it better? Take notice of Starmer's contribution to the war effort and weep.

Far be it for me to defend any government let alone this but one has to ask serious questions of those who's job it is to co-ordinate the logistics surrounding this little glitch in our otherwise sanitised lives.
Who told HMG that we had ample supplies of PPE when it is patently obvious we never did?
Who "conveniently" overlooked that the most vulnerable, ie those in nursing homes, would need the most protection?
Who allowed supermarkets to initially allow people to clear the shelves at the expense of the elderly, and by doing so encourage long queues to form in contrary of the distancing advice?

The list is endless and most of these issues should have been raised by senior civil servants so the respective minister could act accordingly.

If evidence comes to light that the government was well aware then your analogy will be correct and they are deserving of all our vitriol, but I think they just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Should we have locked down in January. Yes.
Should we have closed the borders to all traffic apart from trade. Yes.
Would the government have been called "racists" and "dictators" by the #fbpe cult and all the left wing commentators. Yes.

The pandemic has shed a light on the disaster that is globalisation.
It has also shed a light on how poor most of the world are in dealing with such an outbreak.

The WHO need to not accept any stories from states about pathogens / viruses as well and visit ground zero when these things hit. China did lie. And the WHO bought it.

Strawman. No one suggested closingBorders in January.

Should they have joined the EU PPE and ventilator scheme? - Yes.
Would locking down a week earlier have saved thousands of lives? - Yes
Should those that die in care homes be counted as dead? - Yes
Are we continuing to allow thousands into the country a day unchecked? - Yes
Should Boris Johnson have attended Cobra meetings sooner? - Yes
Is the truth important? - Yes

You are clearly on the extreme right of politics and buy into conspiracy nonsense.

……..Looks as if we did join, misinformation reflects badly on Civil Service

Would locking down a week earlier have saved thousands of lives? - Yes
Hindsight is always 20/20; and 'thousands' is an ungrounded number; misinformation again.

Should those that die in care homes be counted as dead? - Yes
They are, but in the formal national statistics. The 'hospital' number is for fast accurate comparator use and an international standard. Great pity we don't teach statistics and interpretation at school. WHO said testing is critical, testing is pointless without fast comparable and reasonably accurate statistics. The sluggish behaviour of the national statistics operation again reflects badly on the Civil Service.

Are we continuing to allow thousands into the country a day unchecked? - Yes
Really? ...and 'thousands'

Should Boris Johnson have attended Cobra meetings sooner? - Yes
Why? Johnson is actually being Prime Minister, something we've needed for a long time. The operation of Government is working very well and Ministers are now stepping up to the plate and taking responsibility

Is the truth important? - Yes
YES, and something that this crisis has shown is lacking in those who are actually paid to seek and defend it. The BBC and Guardian type reporting which has so damaged our political life should now be held to account. They are not the opposition; job in an emergency is to explain.

You are clearly on the extreme right of politics and buy into conspiracy nonsense.
Generally where there is a very serious threat to the state, parties come together. The paucity of thought and lack of leadership even now, in our opposition parties means this hasn't happened.

It seems we have been bounced into good governance but that has revealed the dire state of our politics and even more sadly, our senior civil service.

You can't argue with that can you. Strangely the two parties that one would expect to monopolise the media with their particular doctrine on the current position, the Limp Dems and Greens, are conspicuous by their absence, and as this poll shows are losing what little ground they held.

Most virus are species specific and only pose a problem when the mutate and subsequently cross the boundary but if covid 19 is shown to be endemic across all mammals then it's going to be a long year.

Which bit do you consider bovine excrement? The bit that says that once a virus takes on zoonotic properties it is a one way passage? Or the fact that this has come from the States where conspiracy theories abound?
I certainly am not suggesting that this came from anywhere other than SE China or is being transmitted by all warm blooded animals but if we infect our pets / farm animals etc then we have a real problem. Ask yourself how a tiger which is obviously in captivity managed to become infected? Only one answer and one we should not ignore.

Maybe the virus prefers a "healthy" host? I can see no scientific reasoning other than, as the report mentioned, that the bronchial tube cells having become coated in tar are less receptive to viral attachment. Bring back tobacco advertising.

I don't have an echo chamber at all actually. I'd say a couple of things though. There's a tendency to rally round the flag in times of crisis. Also - the truth will out. Hancock yesterday was spouting about the new approach of test, track & trace as if it's their idea. The WHO and other leading scientists were telling the government this approacgh combined with an early lockdown in Feb would save lives. Did 25-30,000 people have to die to prove the government were wrong? It was obvious to anyone that applied their mind to it. The **** up will become evident to most normal folk eventually. Don't forget that the press have now turned on Johnson.

You should know by now that politicians in general and ministers in particular do not speak the same language as the rest of us. Most of the delay in testing was down to to the fact that the system was quite simply not in place to roll out across the land, but of course they were not going to admit that so when they say "we followed the scientific advice", please read "consecutive governments have failed dismally in preparing for something that regularly occurs but we had other things on our mind". Remember politicians are pretty obtuse or they wouldn't put themselves forward for a job that has more risks than the Somme in '16.
I still blame senior civil servants who's position is to advise but obviously they were more concerned with the honours and fat pension awaiting them.
The WHO has not come out of this with glowing colours either. angry.gif

What are they going to do? Check out Covid-19s Instagram , Facebook and Twitter for any signs of right wing tendencies?. You dont need a bloody enquiry to work out why. Larger family groups in inner city densely populated areas, a tendency to be more friendly in greetings, a lack of vitamin D, obesity and a lower average salary resulting in poorer health. Not quite how I recall what was said. In fact, most people I know thought WHO was being unnecessarily obtuse. Hancock is actually doing a pretty good job, trouble is, our media reporters ain't. This morning, the BBCs reporter was deliberately trying to trip him up, woukdn't let him answer fully - so it's pointless having her trying to fulfill BBC duty to inform, rather it's actually dangerous. Sad to see even in this above politics crisis, we still suffer from fake and distorted information from those who purport to be unbiased.

I have now reached a point where the two channels offering news at breakfast time are minus one viewer. It doesn't matter how may times the question is answered they still ask "When will the lock down be relaxed?" Or "Why don't we follow other Countries and wear face masks?"
The media have a responsibility to ask relevant questions and equally to relay government advice. The chief medical officer is the chap who has most of the answers so why question his judgement?

The problem is the continuous lies from the government. The big one that is going to bite them is the EU procurement shambles where they risked lives for dogma and are now attempting to cover it up.

The fact that “most people you know” share your views on the WHO says more about your circle of friends than the WHO.

The BIG question asked once we return to "normal" is are you prepared to pay in order to have home manufactured products or do wish to continue relying on cheap imports from the far east with it's (now obvious) shortcomings
Of course the irony is that those liberal lefties who advocate a global trading with countries that use a labour force with no legislative protection are the same as those who bang on about the minimum wage which makes our bottom end products uncompetitive .

Happy to pay fella through tax to prop up loss making manufacturing that is essential. We wouldn't be able to do that in the EU due to unfair competition rules. But we can out of it. 👍
Newres seems to want to continue to employ slave labour in far away lands so he can still get his cheap ****. Not sure who the lefty is anymore and who the right wing capitalist is?😂

Not needed now, thanks to superb handling of crisis. If you're trying to be clever at least keep up. Boy.

Not needed because we're leaving the elderly to die in care homes.

All of a sudden the great unwashed and their respected (sic) leaders are showing concern for a group that have been on the receiving end of bugger all over the years, (apart from having their house taken), but now everyone is their guardian angel. Sorry I forgot the bit that limited PPE supplies to the staff but I'm sure that was just an over sight.
The simple fact remains that if social distancing had been rigorously observed we would be out of this by now with a fraction of the deaths but oh no the public aren't that stupid. angry.gif

Exactly my point. I looked after my elderly Mum for years at home. No way she was going into one of those homes. When she was admitted it was into a rainbow room and she lasted 4 weeks. It pisses me off when these liberal types get all high and mighty about care homes when most of them would put there mothers in a home ar a drop of a hat. I gave up years of my life...as she had spent many years doing the same for me.. I wonder if Newres did or would?

Have we had viruses traveling through care homes and wiping out the residents before? How would your parents were in one? I’ve got a 95 year old aunt in one and it’s terrible strain on her family that they can’t see her and she’s very upset and doesn’t understand what’s going on. Have a ******* heart you right wing ****.

No. If social distancing were implemented two weeks earlier as recommended we’d be out of it. With thousands less dead.

Looks like I touched a guilt ridden nerve. Putting sick elderly relatives in homes is always a choice, no matter how poor you are. So **** off yourself you latte drinking, we need foreign labour to serve my coffee at a posh cafe in the morning cu*t. 👍

Is this you in drag?
