QUOTE (Andy Capp @ Dec 17 2014, 10:37 AM) Well, tight wads don't by the real thing and advertising is spent elsewhere. Tight wads? Some people have better things to do with their time than sit down and read a paper. I'll rephrase that: have things they would rather do.

QUOTE (JeffG @ Dec 18 2014, 04:47 PM) That's assuming you get it. I've not seen a copy for years. I used to purchase it online when it was a paid subscription service but when that was made free I was never refunded, which I am still slightly bitter about. I now just look at the website and the digital version when it is published a week late. However, I have to say that the content of the newspaper is still superior to many other local newspapers in our region.

QUOTE (Biker1 @ Dec 17 2014, 07:56 AM) End of the road for The Post and a few other local papers. Perhaps someone from the NWN could come on here and re-assure us it is safe?? Why do you want them to re-assure us? If they want to keep it going then they must make it more consumer friendly. It is too much about the Haves and how the rich are doing, rather than concentrating on the real people of Berkshire. They need to widen the letter pages and let the real people of Berkshire speak, rather than political voices, the wealthy and the Have's voicing their diatribes.

QUOTE (Biker1 @ Dec 18 2014, 11:51 AM) Why are people who don't choose to buy the paper "tight wads"? There may well be, and probably is, another reason(s) for not buying it. Why, for example, in last week's was there a Christmas TV Guide? Not the sort of thing needed or necessary in a local publication? The NWN also seems to have descended into sensationalist style journalism more akin to the tabloid red top nationals. A style that would have been unseen in the NWN of the past. Again, I think, not a suitable image for a local news journal? I agree. The NWN is a poor shadow of its former self when it was a broadsheet. It now has descended to a title riddled with photos, pointless features on new school classes, what minors want for Christmas, prom night pictures (why is this news??) and other tacky tut. There are still some good news items but the focus has shifted from interesting local news to a swamp of advertising and photos.

QUOTE (Biker1 @ Jan 4 2015, 07:40 PM) All the fuss (possibly justifiable) about the 2.5% rail fare increases just implemented. Much of it in the NWN.However not blowing their trumpet so much about the 3.75% increase in the price of the paper sneakily introduced at the same time. Well it won't effect you much, will it?

I expect they need to do that to pay for a new printing press and new automatic newspaper dispensers, all of which is hideously expensive, so it will be the same next year and the year after. The size and quality of the paper will remain the same of course. Apparently they got the idea from the rail industry

QUOTE (Andy Capp @ Jan 4 2015, 09:48 PM) Well it won't effect you much, will it? Well it does because one of the main reasons I stopped buying it was the regular, above inflation, price rises. (That and Andrew Davis getting a nearly full page spread every week extolling the virtues of blasting wild animals! )
