QUOTE (Strafin @ Mar 31 2012, 09:20 AM) I hope so, I don't understand why we have them anymore. Because the church are terrified that people will prefer to go shopping than attend church. Oh, wait....

Oh, wait.... I had to go into town last Sunday, first time in town for a couple of months, no danger for the church that I could see they were only a handful of people about. Most of those were in Northbrook street. Parkway and the Market Place were practically deserted and this was just before 12 o'clock.

I think it's stupid shops shut early on a Sunday. I'm sure there are people willing to work Sundays and if so, why are stores not open?? How many times have you forgotten something and by the time you go to buy it, it's 4:01 on Sunday and you end up bodging things together at the Co-op?

QUOTE (Jayjay @ Mar 31 2012, 09:35 PM) personally I like Sunday closing, it makes Subday a bit different from the rest of the week. Saturday is my Sub day. I like the Meatball Marinara. I would not mind it on Sunday though.

As find it the only day I can get together with friends and family as a group when most of them are not at work.

Because the shops will be open longer on Sunday will people really spend more and save the economy? It may change your shopping pattern, but I doubt if we would increase our spending.

It may change your shopping pattern, but I doubt if we would increase our spending. Unless you are one of Dave's people who are really wealthy and have had a nice little tax cut! Not many people have residual spending capital at the moment that is the main problem with the economy. That is why Dave had to announce a possible tanker driver strike, that was never announced by the unions anyway, to get his economy figures up to prevent an official recession being announced at the end of this first quarter. The problems for politicians eh? Making the figures say what you want causes sleepness nights you know! I bet he must asks himself if it is all worth it sometimes? Still you have to make the millions grow somehow?

Cosmo, while interesting your idea do you think that the amount of extra fuel purchased will make up for a deficit in the billions? Not to mention it's not like the tax goes to the treasury straight away.. QUOTE (x2lls @ Apr 1 2012, 02:34 AM) I get your point, but... the events you specifiy can happen at any time. QUOTE (Jayjay @ Mar 31 2012, 08:09 AM) During the olymics the Sunday trading hours are to be relaxed. I can, maybe, see the point in London, but will this entice you to spend more in Newbury? The current Sunday shopping hours is out of touch with a fast moving and modern society. All day Sunday shopping should be allowed; if it isn't wanted then the customers will vote with their feet. People have a choice; go or stay at home.
