I saw his video on the Newbury and Thatcham Facebook page. What struck me was how little has changed, the empty buildings are still empty, there's not that many shoppers and there's scaffolding up. I wondered if my impression of Newbury once being a great town with loads going was a bit rose tinted? I wonder if age has something to do,with it, or if the video was shot on a bad day?

The town is going through a renewal phase at exactly the same time that paradigm changes are happening to retail trading. No bad thing in many ways. However, although few will admit it, most don't like change and find it difficult and unsettling; particularly when the outcome is so unclear. Nevertheless, some things are beginning to emerge. For instance, the Town Centre will be home to a much larger population, meaning an in built market for more evening entertainment / restaurants etc. Retailing in the Town centre will start to decline, as we know it. There are likely to be far more pleasure type outlets. Potential improvements along the Canal and Victoria Park could also make for a much nicer more lively ambience. Similarly, the gradual implementation of countryside management should start opening the green vistas of the district far more. Some of the visionary development proposals are very good and a move this direction. Look forward rather than back!

8th January 1995 was Sunday; a week after the Christmas week. It was also a bit wet by the looks of it.

I've still got Atom Heart Mother in the car - CD now though, not 8-track.

Saw them do that in Hyde Park (one of the first free concerts).

Any entertainment, markets etc., added to Newbury town centre will not make a lot of difference if folk cannot get anywhere near them and park up. Not everyone is within walking distance of the town centre. sad.gif

Who said anything about cars? Lets be really futuristic, if you have sufficient numbers actually living in the central area, the 'parking issue' disappears. That's probably way in the future; nevertheless, our forbears who actually created the town centres didn't have their own personal transport.

You have trouble finding a parking space in Newbury, even with Parkway?

Parkway is out of the question for many when they want to go to a restaurant in the Market Place....I mean, it is all of 500 yards

I has a nice birthday lunch in Cafe Rouge the other day - parked for free at Northcroft. I don't really understand what the problem is. Is the Northcroft free parking going?

dunno. You still get 2 free hours at the moment.

I always park in Sainsbury's if I take the car to town, or the £5 all day behind the Northbrook multi story.

People will aimlessly trudge for hours around a shopping mall where they go because the 'parking is so close', covering miles & miles as they shuffle, but seem incapable of walking half a mile in the open from one part of a town to another. 'oh I won't go shopping there - there is no parking'

I think such a misconception should be encouraged as then all people so inclined will bugger off to Amazingstoke, or Reading.

Good to hear The Wall again.

Glad to see Morrisons opening one of their "Local" small store formats in old HMV, as in NWN.
That's 2 new food retailers at that end of town, what with Aldi opening next month.

All we need now is a Budgens, Costcutter & a few Asdas & we'll have the full set.

Why we need yet another faceless corporate comestibles monolith is beyond me. A boon would have been to hear that the Benyon Estate had bought the site & was opening a permanet farmer's market for the benefit of the local economy......

Certain shops, and it is dependant on whether you think the view is held by the majority or minority
