For those who haven't seen the next proposed development:

"...to enhance the ecology and form a new gateway to Newbury".

Handy for Vodafone, I would think.

I think it's quite a good place to build, assuming they use the Vodafone roundabout for access then the links to A34(N) and M4 will be super-handy for residents.

Great idea. It will relieve the pressure on street parking in Shaw Estate and there is already a very good bus service. (Tongue firmly in cheek!)

On a serious note; I have no issue with this development, which is really in filling and became an obvious candidate the moment the Vodafone site was agreed. However, it's in the Parish of Shaw c u m Donnington. As the village precept is lower than the town, should we not consider redrawing Newbury's boundary to take in all the urban fringe. No one likes freeloaders!

Whilst I agree with you it shows that infill between Newbury and the by-pass is going to happen despite the insistence of the planners a few years back that this would not be the case.

Of course, but who would believe anything they say anyway?

I'm concerned more about the extra traffic around the Newbury area...

Not that the website really tells you much at all.

I guess when they made those promises there wasn't the increased demand for new housing that I'm led to believe there is today. Or maybe there was and they just buried their heads in the sand / didn't foresee the need to build new houses in Newbury (/Shaw-c-Donnington) / assumed that any new housing would be built somewhere else... In either case, it sounds like a promise that was never likely to be kept.

I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it. If progress is as slow as it is on Sandelford then it'll be the end of the century before anything happens. Perhaps that's what the planners had in mind. Having said that the Wash Common Mafia (much like the regular Mafia apart from the fact they have all their shopping delivered by Waitrose) will continue to shout 'anywhere but our back yard' and will be delighted to see much needed new homes shunted elsewhere.

There's no shunting elsewhere - these would be in addition to Sandleford. IMO it's too soon for another large site to be developed. Should be under consideration for development in 10-15 years, not now. Get the Racecourse and Sandleford built first.

The area is also very short of amenities - and the developers seem to be keen not to supply any. No school, no surgery, no local shops - just a hotel.

There aren't any shops or schools on any of the other new developments round here, what's so different about this one?

A primary school is planned for Sandleford plus extensions to Park House and the Surgery and there are shops nearby.

The growth of Newbury plus the generally increased birth rate means there are not enough school places now, let alone after another 3,000 houses are built.

Very unfair heading from NWN :
http://www.newburytoday.co.uk/2013/have-yo...939636230468750

Makes it look as if Vodafone are behind the development rather than Fairhurst Estates.

In the past Vodafone have objected to this land being developed.

That's the only one. Thatcham Moors, The Racecourse, Manor Park and so on all bigger and no shops or schools. Sandleford yes, because that's where they think the posh people live; just looking after their own.

Park House extensions were agreed as wanted well before any Sandleford development as was the need for a Primary School in the Wash Common vicinity. Ironically, I think this development was the Tory let's stuff the Libs plan!
