The Government's foolishness in allowing/ecouraging working coal powered stations to close will surely lead to power cuts for us all.

3 old Didcot generators due to head down to Chieveley soon (as per NWN) and then to Avonmouth:
see
http://www.newburytoday.co.uk/2013/delays-...morrow-saturday

No doubt they're being shipped abroad & recommissioned to generate electricity for some developing country, churning out CO2 as it did at Didcot, but probably minus any filters, so they can maximise production.

No doubt Brussels happy at the grand plan unsure.gif

The worst thing about us shutting down Didcot A, is that due to the way Gas fired power stations work they can never match the output of a coal fired plant the same size!

But what really stinks, is that now Didcot A is closed down, the brand new Didcot B (Gas powered) station is only being operated at about 20 - 33% capacity... Why? Because the wholesale cost of gas, makes it unviable!

So a massive double whammy there I think...

1. Didcot B could never supply the same amount of electric as the old Didcot A.

2. Now Didcot A is dead and closed down, Didcot B cannot even operate fully!

Nice forward thinking from governments past, present & future.

Although the blame has to lie with government and the power companies, as both knew the deadline on CO2 emmissions would come into effect in 2015, so they have had years to invest in new power plants and then build enough of them to not only produce the current output needed but also to build in enough to allow for growth. Sadly they have not done either.

What should have happened is that the government should have just opted out of the EU regulations and cited National Security, as it is a matter of National Security that the lights stay on!

All I can say is make sure you have got some candles this winter, as we may well need them!

They're transformers rather than generators. The generators that you're thinking of are actually the coal-fired boilers that raise high-pressure steam which turns a turbine coupled to the actual generator. Transformers just change the voltage that the electricity is generated at so that it can be transmitted with little loss at very high voltage. I'm looking forward to seeing them go past.

I love posts that include unsubstantiated claims and phrases like "will surely" and "no doubt" (twice) to back them up.

They're not claims; they're opinions.

No doubt he is right. We used to make a partial living from purchasing second hand generating equipment and selling/shipping/setting to work in places like India.

What are we going to do eh?
More and more people demanding cheap energy, less and less oil, gas & coal remaining and a "sustainable" energy supply which will never fulfill our expanding needs.
Apparently fracking will lead us into oblivion! rolleyes.gif
It's all very well folks saying they want cheap energy, but where is it going to come from?

No idea where they are going but saw, on the news, the first transformer mounted on this seriously big transporter. Can't believe they will find a ship big enough to stick that in. That's designed to go on the end of a major generator, maybe we're keeping it for one of our new nuclear sites.

I happened to get stuck behind it today on the A34, it was huge, I've never seen such a big trailer either pulling it along.

It appears that the transformer(s) will be used in Germany. Hope we got a good price,

Nah; would have been an inter group transfer, we'd have paid HO for disposing of them off us... laugh.gif

It's all a bl***y farce. The plant was running on part - if not all - biofuel. Similar thing is happening at Tilbury. The plant was shut and converted to complete biomass usage. Unfortunately it had a fire only about 2 weeks after being put back in use. I went down as an 'expert' to comment and give advice on what to do. After rebuilding the place has been shut down because the government subsidy is not enough for RWE to operate it. What a b***s up the energy supply system is!! rolleyes.gif

That's market forces for you and the 'fair playing field' that the EU makes us have. That means anyone can take over our businesses but we are not able to take over theirs. EdF is the classic, the French nationalised electricity supplier!!! Same in Germany, does anyone imagine they'd let RWE fall into foreign hands? So then, our energy industry it makes a lot of sense to have French, Gerrman and Spanish owners doesn't it?

So the largest take-over in history of Mannesmann by Vodafone didn't happen then?

Yes it did, Vodafone went under the covers with that, and for once we won! I was in Germany at the time, woe betide anyone with a Voda connection. It still rankles, and indeed the German government learned a lesson and tightened the internal regulation. We on the other hand just bend over and let things happen.

As was said of Austen Chamberlain, we always play the game and we always loose.
