No, St Barts’ playing fields are both on the other side of Fifth Rd.

Yes, unrealistic to close off that road given the number of residents that would have complained about access to the town being difficult, but Church Road didn't have those resident numbers nor would it create the same problems about access to anywhere in particular

That doesn't explain why the road had to be closed. After all, several primary schools in the vicinity have main entrances on even busier roads. Then there is Park House! Logic isn't exactly WBCs strongest suit!

Maybe it was because there would be so many kids walking back and forth to the astroturf pitches (Hockey and football?) opposite the school main entrance throughout the day that it was safer just to restrict traffic rather than continue to allow passing traffic. Not many schools have their playing fields separated from the 'school grounds' with a road running through the middle so when the opportunity was there to close it off and make a safer environment it was taken.
Streetview

Access to the Park House sports fields is to the rear of the school isn't it? Same with St Barts and Kennet Schools

What's the precident for that? Parkway bridge is a public road closed to the public. Worse, Church Road, Shaw, which the residents actually fought (1909) a High Court action to keep open is also closed to the public. Then there is Jack Street; which was given away and private security tells you what to do. The Council decides what's public or not these days.
Park Way bridge is open to the public if you're on a bike, on foot, or sat in the back of a bus or taxi. You could say the Severn Bridge is 'closed to the public' unless you happen to have £5.60. Church Road is a bus gate and unless it was there you'd have a lot of cars driving past the front entrance for Trinity School

I fail to see why a private road (for the use of the racecourse and gym) should have priority over traffic on Hambridge Road - that's exactly what happens on the roundabout.

If it is a public road, then it should be open to the public.
The residents in there didn't buy properties with price tags starting at £400k only for them to have a main route runñing past the front door. As for a private road having a priority on a roundabout over Joe Public then it's fairly routine. Calleva Business Park onto the A340 for one... plenty of examples nationally as well

hmmm... I don't side with the pseudo-intellectuals that mourn his passing and refer to the copy of his book that's in their possession...mostly unread... (but they have read the Amazon feedback contribution from other readers, so have a general idea)

I'm no cosmologist and don't have a deep understanding of what happened so that over a short matter of several millennia we have become what we are, but I do appreciate that he was a clever chap and he had a mind trapped in a useless body and that he did have a sense of humour as his personal contributions on The Simpsons will testify.

My knowledge and appreciation of cosmology is more on the 'general' level and is fairly well described by Mr Python....

It seems a number of sports were just waiting for darts to make the first move....

Boxing is under pressure to get rid of ring girls...(Eddie Hearn says no but if there's money saying "Get rid" they'll go..) There will be more sports to follow. Anything involving a bunch of pretty girls being paid to be objectified by 'lecherous men' (and some laydees too no doubt) will go (or have to justify themselves to the Feminazi Brigade) ...but what's so lecherous about just appreciating a good looking girl anyway?

A number of sports clubs have been asked to ban their cheerleader squads (if the Dallas Cowgirls et al go then everything about that silly sport will be dead to me).

There's even talk of girl athletes being told to cover up more so that they can't be said to be bringing this objectification upon themselves.... I imagine beach volleyball only made it onto TV screens because of the outfits and flesh on display...Those swimming costumes some of the girls wear at the Olympics... do they HAVE to have costumes with such a high cut over the hip? And that naughty minx Tom Daley is as bad...

Time to invest in a shop selling burkas...

Just because you look more Talcum-X than Malcolm-X doesn't mean you're not who you identify as....

So long as you identify as non-white, no-one should have a problem with you applying. And if you think that you've been discriminated against because of how you appear then you should sue the racist b**tards.

I mean if a man can have a baby linky thing then surely the mere fact of having pale complexion shouldn't prevent you thinking and believing yourself to be black.

I'm outraged. When members of the Travelling Community offer people unpaid employment it's called slavery. But when ethnic minorities are offered the same opportunities it's called an internship. Bigots!

It's a piece of piddle. All you need to do is change all the dials on existing spacecraft to show 'Warp Speed' and Bob's your uncle.

We will all have been space dust for millennia before any of this fantasy could ever have been a reality. If Einstein says it can't be done then it can't be done.

He could have taken some time out by claiming to have diabetes 2. Let the circling media vultures get bored and move on.

He was different in that he was an open and committed Christian, which whether you believe in sky fairies or not makes a change from the faux-pious and pompous political leaders who turn up to Sunday services when the TV crews are around, or put on a facade for other religious events where their attendance is 'part of the job' rather than because they have a strong faith that someone above is watching and checking whether they're lip-synching to the hymns or not....

When will the first Strike by Unite and co take place?

Emboldened by the GE results I can see the Unions with JC on side causing much misery.

I can't do the linky thing but I've already seen the #resist thing doing the rounds from the "Labour's Digital Army" website implying watch this space for news on what to do next under the name Project MAYhem. The plans will become clear and will be shared from tomorrow apparently

I dare say there wouldn't be a huge resistance to removing or subsidising tuition fees if it was kept to the brightest students doing meaningful degrees, but we're way past that now. A fair number of my son's peer group toddled off to their various Unis to do 'Sports Science' degrees with some dream of being physios at top rugby clubs or such like. The reality is that the nearest they can get to a sports related job is handing out towels at Nuffield...

Spot on; like the lie they used to believe about success in life was via a University degree followed by a career with a good firm who paid you enough to buy a reasonably decent home and a fair pension when you retire

Yeah, fell for that one didn't they!
Once upon a time University degrees were something to aspire to for the top academically gifted percentage. Now it's just seen by a huge percentage of less academically gifted as being a natural progression from school A Levels, where E is counted as a pass and can get you a place at a converted Poly during the clearing process.. I mean ANY Uni is better than NO Uni right? You can still get pissed at Southampton Solent Uni right?

With their begging letter to the Council and the various articles in the NWN over the last months which included how short they were of funds to allow this development to be completed and provided links to their 'justgiving' page you do wonder why there was the need for the demolition to proceed if there weren't the funds there. The houses may (or may not) have been run down but they were still habitable.

Interestingly, it might be what happens a la belle France this weekend that will shape the future viability of the EU with eight out of the eleven candidates being anti Europe in one shape or another. If, and it's a big if, they pull out of either the euro or the EU as a whole it will put a completely different complexion on the brexit issue. Vive la France! Vive les Francais! 🇫🇷

Five or so years ago nobody would have sympathised with Le Pen or her father's views as even if you had no understanding of French politics you would recognise 'National Front' and want to take a step back... roll forwards to today and it's a different picture. We may be in for a surprise but the general notion is that there will be a pact of some sort between the other parties to keep Le Pen away from winning outright. Interesting weekend for Europe though. I have a sneaking hope that applecarts will be upset and that drunken sod in Brussels, Juncker, will have someone other than Farage and Britain to cry himself to sleep over

Well there's an example of a warranty plan that isn't worth the paper it was printed on. rolleyes.gif I'm surprised their extended warranty puts the onus back on you the customer, but there it is in black and white in the small print nobody bothers to look at.. They even build in a depreciation clause for goods
https://www.tesco.com/direct/electrical-war.../?source=others

Suggest your only hope is getting an online quote confirming that it's uneconomical to repair. "If We decide that the product is uneconomical to repair We will offer You a cash settlement equal to the current value."

Curry's implied their extended warranty was pretty much a swap in store. (Never took one out so don't know if they have a small print get-out)

In future buy at Costco. One of my friends has bought virtually all of their household items at Costco. Buy an item once and it seems it's on a perpetual replacement if it goes kaput. In the past 12 years plus she's replaced the washing machine, drier and dishwasher three times yet only paid when she initially bought the items. Didn't even need to keep the receipt as the onus is on Costco to maintain their records and show that she bought the items ages back, and with their 'no quibble' guarantee she takes everything back whenever she wants, including toasters...

It's probably a regular occurrence for drunks to be pissing themselves in the back of panda cars as they get carted away and for tramps to be dragged into the cells when they have keks with more skid marks than the starting grid at Santa Pod, but I bet Stuart Nicholls regrets using his bum crayons to redecorate his cell and himself. Probably ended up with a fair amount on himself too (I understand the police call it 'bronzing up' when scroats smear themselves so that coppers don't touch them)

I wonder if his work involves him handling food? And I wonder how proud his family are of his 15 minutes of fame....

..blames the fact of being sat on by a few officers while getting cuffed for the explosion in his boxers... and his anger issues for why he then decided to wipe his bum mud over the magnolia walls of his cell...

His brief said in Court “He had a full bowel and the pressure of four police officers on his back caused him to involuntarily mess himself. He was very embarrassed and asked for material to clean it up and when these were not provided, he took it out on the cell.”

He was in Cell Number Three... it would have been nice if he'd been in Number Two when he had his number two poo when the daft sod decided to redecorate the place with his own bum crayons... probably thought "This'll teach those coppers"

Except the Newbury bobbies thought he might want to fully appreciate his artwork and fecal smearings so left him in it.. He's several hundred quid lighter now too after being made to pay to clean the place up. Hopefully he's got a few quid spare for some clean grollies

$hit happens
