Given the population of West Berks that only amounts to a quid a head, probably less.

Whats the problem.

Get the taxpayer to bail 'em out.

All WBC has to do is declare themselves to be a bank and central government will fall over itself to stuff money into it.

£500k pays for the cinema subsidy, or the scrapped travel token scheme, a few Chief Execs. £500k is a lot of money.

"The latest estimate (2007) puts the district's population at 150,700 – an increase of some 4% since 2001".

That would make it around 152,700 now.

Doesn't this 'my Dad's bigger than your Dad' style of local politics grind you down? Shame the Cllr Betts didn't just say he was keeping the answer as a surprise for the Council Christmas party. Lighten up lads, a budget is an estimate not a quote!

OK So I overestimated the population. So its about 3 squid a head

Yeah I know Not everyone pays any taxes

Perhaps its more like the price of a couple of pints each. But given the size of the total budget half a mill plus or minus is not a huge error.

One half of one percent, by my calculation (total budget £104.66m).

Were it not for the credit crunch I'd still get max bonus for an over of that percentage!

The point is, we are told travel tokens are unaffordable (at 0.5% of the total budget)! One can't have it both ways!

It seems like more if you think you can get two pints with three pounds wink.gif

This is a budget issue, budgets are plans to spend and should be seen in that light. Moving forward, they show where management attention is needed on a regular basis. I have to say, one, I'm rather pleased that they do have management tools to monitor performance and two, the projections are small percentage points out. This suggests that WBC could actually teach some in the private sector a lesson - Metrolink, and the software contractors in the NHS.

Half a million over budget is not that much of a surprise particularly when it is consumed by Comunity care.
You only need to have the fees for the unexpected care of say 10 older people in West Berkshire come to the surface at £50k each a year to bust the budget.

Exactly. What would these people who say they should be exactly on budget have them do, turn away older people in need should there be more than they envisaged?

It's why you can't run community care and many other services like a conventional business.
