QUOTE (Simon Kirby @ Jul 26 2014, 01:13 PM) My feeling is that our legal system has some good checks and balances, and one of those is that a public prosecution should always be in the public interest. It's not entirely straight forward so the best thing is to read the CPS Code for Crown Prosecutors. It's somewhat unsatisfactory, but the public interest test is not easily applied by a non-specialist on the basis of a few paragraphs of alleged evidence in the local paper, so it means at times that what is the right and proper decision in the circumstances isn't necessarily easy to understand, but then if the decision isn't easy to understand then justice is not obviously being seen to be done. In my opinion I think the justice system, on many occasions, does not give the victims of crime the support that they deserve but seems reluctant to deliver a suitable sentence to the perpetrators of crimes letting them off with "a smack on the wrist" allowing them back into society to commit further crime. In my opinion "life" should be life and those that abuse and kill children should be hanged. |

QUOTE (Nothing Much @ Jul 25 2014, 09:00 PM) I am not sure about this. I have been offloading such unnecessary items as I can. So I have been talked into a family trust. The intent is that a much loved family home of over 30 years now will be protected as I pass on the long and lonely road. Taxes have to be paid at some time. My theme for the night is of the anarchy and the undoubted genetic humour of my child
I have to declare stuff for HMRC ,mostly for money laundering , So I emailed my NI number today so she could fill in a form . These are the replies over an afternoon.
Is this your cereal number?....
Hospital number?...
Ok ok I got it…….NI number Cereal number was funny though!! Maybe lunatic asylum number? I gave up and went to the pub! ce I have been doing a similar exercise with much encouragement from my heirs although my collections of various "tat" have not been received very graciously. Oh well I'll see you up the tip. |

QUOTE (Turin Machine @ Jul 10 2014, 07:11 PM) Tied house for mine, which is why I decided early on I was going to buy my own. When I decided I wanted my own house, I saved and I took an evening job to earn some extra money and I stopped smoking and drinking. It wasn't easy but it had to be done. |

QUOTE (Andy Capp @ Jun 22 2012, 11:12 AM) I don't think that anyone is saying that it is always safe to ride on the pavement.
Like I said, sometimes cycling on the pavement is not dangerous to pedestrians, but sometimes it is.
To answer your substantive point: I think the situation should remain as it is, except, perhaps there should be something done about the more 'aggressive' riders, but to me, this is a very low priority and doesn't merit any more legal investment. That' alright then. Are you sure you're not IOMMI?? |

QUOTE (Timbo @ Jun 22 2012, 09:33 AM) What about when a car collides with a pedestrian? Should be ban driving? Cars rarely travel on the pavement. QUOTE I guess it's all about the "common link" in accidents. The common link is always the pedestrian, so let's ban walking. See, problem solved. There are many accidents that don't involve pedestrians. |

QUOTE (Strafin @ Jun 21 2012, 05:50 PM) I actually agree with both outcomes, I don't really see how the owner of a dog could be charged if it attacks somebody in his home. It is a terrible thing to happen, but what real offence is there? Perhaps the dog should be destroyed, but you can't go round prosecuting people just for having pets. As far as the Facebook guy goes, he incited violence, not once, twice or thrice but four times publicly, including saying "do dome coppers in". Yep, I agree. |

QUOTE (JeffG @ Jun 20 2012, 10:00 AM) Just to be clear (and definitely not being pedantic) do you mean "where the money at risk was not public money"? Maybe I am cynical, but I would have thought that in the public sector public money being at risk would not be a high priority, if the phrase has any meaning at all. Sorry, you are right, it is not clear. In my opinion and experience the way that money is spent in the private sector is so much more accountable than the public sector. In particular purchasing and procurement seems to be less controlled when the expense is from the public purse. |
