Yes, it's quite weird really. To me, liberal means Cobden and Bright, the stuff of Mrs Thatcher, that is 'small government'. Whereas stateside and increasingly over here, liberal has come to mean quite the reverse, 'big government' nanny knows best and everyone has an allocated social worker. I'm an old fashioned liberal!

QUOTE (Andy Capp @ Nov 15 2016, 01:44 PM) If Wiki is right:
liberal ˈlɪb(ə)r(ə)l adjective 1. willing to respect or accept behaviour or opinions different from one's own; open to new ideas. "liberal views towards divorce"
2. (of education) concerned with broadening a person's general knowledge and experience, rather than with technical or professional training. "the provision of liberal adult education"
synonyms: wide-ranging, broad-based, general, humanistic "the provision of liberal adult education"
noun 1. a person of liberal views. "a concern among liberals about the relation of the citizen to the state"
Then count me in; however, I find 'political' Liberals - the 'tree-hugging girls' blouses' - are far from accepting of behaviour or opinions different from their own and can be every bit as narrow-minded in outlook as the 'temple-bursting swivel-eyed'. Quite so. Indeed recent events seem to demonstrate that the term Liberal Democrat is an oxymoron.

QUOTE (On the edge @ Nov 15 2016, 05:05 PM) Quite so. Indeed recent events seem to demonstrate that the term Liberal Democrat is an oxymoron. I think the issue here is that liberal minded people have a strong suspicion that some opinions of others and their votes are based upon greed and prejudice. See the other thread where someone suggests that if a refugee from a war zone crosses a border after reaching a "safe" country, they are no longer refugees and become economic migrants and therefore presumably not deserving of assistance. We saw Farage using race in the EU vote and Donald Trump doing the same. They aren't creating opinion - they are being populist. People like Trump and Farage are very divisive.

And increasingly it seems "popular". Also can you define what a safe and war torn country is? A lot of it is defined by what is reported on by the broadcasting authorities and press. Some parts of some Countries may be perfectly safe whereas other parts are desperate and war torn. How do you tell? I'm not saying it is easy but as I am sure you will agree some will take advantage...
