Council needs to trim costs, and this slice is understandable. Criticism perhaps better aimed at BAYER who have massive profits they could use to continue funding. It's website claims: "The company sees itself as a good corporate citizen in every country in which it is present"; not in Newbury it seems. In 2009 EBITDA (earnings) were around £37m, so the cost of cleaning up the car park will hardly make a big dent. We could all show our displeasure by boycotting any of Bayer's many products, by watching out for their name on product packaging. Besides medical products, they make agricultural products, some of which are sold in Garden Centres. Aspirin is their most famous consumer name. They have also had bad press recently due to the finger being pointed at their crop spraying chemicals (being reported by many learned bodies) is instrumental in mass bee destruction.Instead of Bayer cultivating some positive PR, and showing their Good Corporate neighbourliness, they have this thread on the local paper.

QUOTE (GMR @ Jan 22 2011, 05:16 PM) I went with my daughter shopping and we went to Bayers car park and it was closed. I did read over Christmas that they were not going to let WBC use their property any more because WBC withdrew their cleaning bill or whatever, but I forgot. It also seems so did many others. There was a queue all the way up Strawberry hill to get in to their car park. We eventually parked in Sainsbury's. But a lot of disappointed and angry people are going to cuss WBC. Why not just drive a couple of hundred yards and park in the Northbrook multi storey, for a couple of quid, it was hardly worth the petrol going to Sainsbury. I in fact don't blame WBC for pulling out, it wasn't a few bob, the annual rent was quite high with no return. Most Newbury people thought that Bayer were doing it as part of their local community spirit. Just goes to show I'm afraid.

QUOTE (KMcC @ Jan 22 2011, 10:41 PM) No they don't, the car park is included in the lease with the landlord If it's Bayer's lease surely they can say who does and doesn't have the right to park there. I'm pretty sure I can't roll up on Monday morning and expect to park there. And to back up GMR I would drive to Sainsbury's rather than pay WBC's rip off parking charges. Or I would try and find one of the free spaces that are available, and there are quite a few.

Anyway, we went shopping and went to Witherspoons for a meal, which is near Sainsbury's.

I agree, if you look hard enough you can find free space, unfortunately not everybody knows where to look.

It's a real pain when people take up spaces in Sainsbury's car park so genuine shoppers like me can't find a space. (Yes, I admit to doing it myself on rare occasions ). They should do what the late, great, Mortimer's used to do, and refund a charge when shopping in the store (and not just for a bag of crisps!).

QUOTE (Richard Garvie @ Jan 23 2011, 12:06 PM) Hungerford do this. Sounds like something Newbury traders could do too. Offer to pay parking if shoppers spend over a certain amount.
