Just walked through town today and saw workmen busy in the old 2 Seasons shop. There was a planning permission notice on out side with the applicant "Maplins Electronics".

So it looks like Maplins is coming to town.

At least its not a shoe shop.

That is brilliant news; at least something useful.

No. That is what they call it 'shutl'.

Opens February 16th I think I was told. The staff have 3 weeks training in Swindon.

I remember Maplins from the 70's/early 80's, buying copper-clad board and ferric chloride crystals - great times. The catalogue's space scene art work was fabulous. Very un-cool shop to be seen in though, very geeky.

I would still go to Maplins in Reading because...

a.) The retail park in which Maplins is based in Reading is free and always has enough parking. Failing that you can just park in Morrisons.
b.) It has a Morrisons near, which offers a nice selection of salad-bowl type self service (I like the spicey chicken pasta myself), unlike Sainsburys which nearly always has some sweaty persons fingers in it and is almost exclusively empty.
c.) No-one has ever gone "right honey, let's go to Newbury" and had a good time.

Whereas Reading is the cultural hub of the region.......

That's an improvement then. Last time I went to Maplins, they had a poky little shop in Oxford Road and you were lucky if you could find somewhere to park in one of the side streets.

There has been a Maplins in the retail mark near Morrisons for about 4 years now. So obviously the last time you went to Maplin you were probably looking for a big chunky capacitor laugh.gif

Maplin - I have seen their stores but have never been in one. I'm guessing they are a bit like Tandy or Radio Shack. So I won't be going in the new store.

Newbury used to have a Tandy, next to what is now Iceland. I guess in a way Newbury still has one, as Carphone Warehouse bought the chain.....what goes around........

Well, that's certainly a logical reason to drive all the way to Reading.

That's exactly what its like. Go on, give it a go, anoraks are cheap enough in the sales, added to which you'd be able to wear it when a steam train next comes through Newbury. laugh.gif
