I guess one question we could ask is, why? Is this truly the best and most efficient means to fund such a project? Answers on a postcard please.

It's a way. I doubt it will raise all they need, but it's a start I guess.

http://www.newburytoday.co.uk/2013/charity-quiz-night-and-buffet-for-community-radio-group": "Charity quiz night and buffet for community radio group".

I've done a search on the Charity Commission web site and Kennet Community Radio is not a registered charity.

Anyhoo, if Radio Left-Hook is going to fund itself through quiz nights that's fine - just don't come sniffing round for state hand-outs. Radio Left-Hook says it wants a community radio license, and it's a condition of Ofcom awarding that license that over half of the station's revenue comes from non-advertising sources, and touching up the local council for that money is the easiest option.

Everything has to start from somewhere. Then you build from there. But we must congratulated them for trying to do something.

Just on the state-funding thing again: I see that http://www.facebook.com/KennetRadio/info is still giving the address of the station as Market Place, Newbury, RG14 5AA. Obviously there are a number of separate addresses served by that postcode, but as one of those addresses is the town hall I'd be interested to know whether RLH is using the facilities of the town hall and if so on what terms.

I've tried to have a listen but the internet station doesn't appear to be up and running.

If it is going to try and raise money by hosting charity events such as stated then I can't see it will ever be up and running. I would have thought raising some cash to see if there is any demand for a local radio station first would have been more appropriate. Still not really interested providing no taxpayers cash is spent on the project or in a subsidy for premises for it.

Need to keep a weather eye on this - would be one for the District Auditor. Arguably, without formal agreement of the Council, the address shouldn't be used. I thought there were strict rules on that?

Julian registered Kennet Radio as a community station at his home address. Funny thing is, after trying to set this project up for over a year, Julian had one meeting with me and then registered the business name without consulting me and then started broadcasting on the internet, again without my knowledge. First I knew was when I had a call from the PRS asking if I had anything to do with the station. I decided then to have nothing more to do with him on the matter. Newbury needs a proper communt station, not a ego driven local councillor using the station website to attack the tories, imagine what kind of news bias it would have if it ever got a licence?

Posted by: dannyboy Feb 27 2013, 11:32 AM

Neither of you could decide who'd get the best slots?

The web site http://whois.domaintools.com/kennetradio.com - a second home perhaps?

Quite frankly what did anybody expect. I always thought it was nothing but a self promotion scheme.

Just going through who "likes" this whole project on Facebook and trying to pin Names with Usernames laugh.gif

Certainly wouldn't pay £12.50 to go to the start up event that's for sure.. I would like a Community Radio but it would have to be a TRULY community radio, hosted by people of all walks of life and age ranges, music, light hearted issues.. Wouldn't want to get bogged down in it.

Posted by: Richard Garvie Feb 28 2013, 10:04 AM

My idea was a community radio station which was used to transform a disused public building, whilst providing a place to provide skills and training for the community. It appears what Julian wants is a homage to Radio Caroline / the boat that rocked playing 12 inch vinyl and a bedroom dj's wet dream. Broadcasting council meetings and such like... who exactly would listen to it?

For all of those who warned me about letting Julian get involved, you were right and I was wrong. I've bitten my tongue for months on this, but the fact he's now using it to promote the Lib Dems is just an example of what he had in mind from day 1. At least my idea was to have a politics free station!!

No worries.

You had some excellent ideas though Richard, and as Radio Swift-Hook doesn't appear to have made much progress there's still a niche for a genuine grass-roots station such a motormad envisions. I know several people who were interested but alienated by the establishment control, I think if you were to kick this off again as a grass-roots project it might yet succeed - good excuse for a round of London Pride anyroad.

I think that so long as it wasn't a political whetstone for any party and not a council bashing forum I would give a thumbs up.

What Richard particularly brings to the party is that he already presents on local radio.

I can't imagine that unbridled council bashing would make for good listening, but personally I'd want some of the programming to be like the Today Programme where the establishment is given a bit of a grilling. That doesn't currently happen in any other medium at present and I can imagine such a programme would come in for serious "council-bashing" criticism of the kind levelled at the Today Programme from time to time. Frankly I'd be amazed if the establishment would want to be held to account publicly in a forum it didn't completely control, but that's just one of the challenges.

Posted by: Andy Capp Feb 28 2013, 01:19 PM

Can anyone see the council or any authority being either willing or obliged to be sit and be grilled? And even if they did, what chance that they would be sufficiently candid enough to make it a worth while program. The council and other authoritative figures have a perfect opportunity to engage on forums like this one, but their reticence 'speaks volumes' and suggests this wouldn't even 'get off the ground'. An interesting idea, but I think this is little more than a pipe dream.

RG is complaining that his idea of a community radio station has been gazumped by JSH into some kind of Правда. If RG thinks a Community Radio Station is a good idea why not just re-start the project?

To be honest, I hadn't thought about doing a separate project, Kennet Radio was my vision and it's kind of been tarnished. That being said, if Julian continues in the direction he is going, he'll end up being prosecuted or sued for some sort of licence breach so maybe I will put something together. If there are enough interested parties, I'll put something together as I have the equipment and industry support that would be required.

If anyone is up for a beer and a chat, let me know - richard.garvie@gmail.com.
