Newbury Today Forum _ Newbury News _ NWN: Aldi's new store will be opening tomorrow; i.e. Friday.

Posted by: GMR Mar 21 2013, 04:11 PM

Aldi will be opening tomorrow (Friday) according to today's Newbury Weekly News (page 3), irrespective that I and thousands of others went today to their opening. We all must be living in Alice's Wonderland as our local paper wouldn't get such an important event wrong. So remember; tomorrow Aldi's will be opening. If you went today then you are delusional.

Posted by: HeatherW Mar 21 2013, 04:47 PM

I hope you are kidding? I was going to the new Aldi today but when I saw the article in the Newbury Weekly News saying it was opening tomorrow I changed my plans. I did see the sign outside that said opening on the 21st but I thought they had complications and had to postpone until tomorrow.

I hope this is not a wind up and the NWN is right. There are too many jokers on here trying to wind people up. I cannot see the NWN getting such an event wrong. After all Aldi’s paid to put a two page spread in their paper to advertise what they are selling on their opening day.

Aldi's will be opening tomorrow (Friday). Just not for the first time, I'll let you into a little secret.....it'll be opening on Saturday as well, not for the first time this week, but certainly for the first time on a Saturday.

Sorry, I do not think that is funny. The Newbury Weekly News gave the impression that Aldi's opening day was tomorrow, not today. That is what annoys me about this forum. Too many jokers who cannot take things seriously. I am not the only one who changed their plans so that they can go to the opening day.

You can shop there already, but the opening day is still tomorrow. Some places do this so that they can see if there are any snags to iron out before the official opening day.

The official open day is today, not tomorrow. I know this because I asked. Anyway, that isn't the point. The NWN said it is opening tomorrow where it should of said it was opening today.

Weird that their signs all stated 21st. rolleyes.gif

It looks like it was a short, so I imagine the 'journalist' typed it on the 20th. Page 22 (and 23) is quite emphatic about being 'now open'! wink.gif

HeatherW, there is bloody great two-page spread which says NOW OPEN in the paper, why trust a little article buried inside the paper instead? But at the end of the day it is only a bloody supermarket!!! Special days are Thursdays and Sundays, so your life might be saved yet! tongue.gif

Sorry. are you saying that the opening of an Adli is a SERIOUS business? Why would anyone change plans to attend the opening of a shop?

Huge signs outside the place and this very site saying the date would be today, Let's ignore them shall we?

I'd have thought the only people concerned about the opening of a new Aldi's would be the production team at the Jeremy Kyle Show as it'll take their core audience away for the morning.

I have a feeling that I wouldn't like the Jeremy Kyle Show, but that said I understand that Aldi have good offers from time to time. Or is that Lidl? Anyroad up, you only find opening day offers on opening day, so if I'd planned to go and missed it because the paper got the dates wrong then I'd me somewhat tee'd off.

It was open today as planned, and as advertised. It wasn't a great opening with lots of offers, it was just a normal day of trading to them. There was some difference between their prices and Tesco's, with that side of things I was impressed, however I doubt I'll go back, cheap comes at a price, and the "experience" was pretty poor.

Rather a self-righteous comment don't you think ! And no i never went personally, but there are plenty of folk about who are not as well off as some & cannot afford Waitrose or M & S prices.

Actually, I know a number of people who are as well off as some and will certainly use these outlets. Nothing wrong with saving money. After all, HM gives Tesco Christmas Puds as gifts. Most people don't really appreciate UK food retailing is a self protecting oligopoly, it has a higher gross margin than any of its continental competitors. Ever wondered why nice Mr Sainsbury could donate all that lovely cash to the Tate?

It's called 'giving something back' and nowt wrong with it. I look forward to Aldi funding something of equal stature.

I nearly missed out as well. When I saw what was written in the Newbury I was going to go the next day. But then I drove past it and saw it opened and popped in. They were giving away free tokens for the trolleys. I know it is nothing but can be handy if you can't find a spare pound. Anyway, I found the shop very refreshing. We need cheaper food outlets.

I can’t see what all the fuss is about what day it was supposed to be open or not. It is hear and it has been advertised for a long time that it was going to open on the 21st. In fact previous NWN’s articles have said that Aldi’s will be opening on the 21st. There are more important things to worry about than when a cheap foreign shop will be opening or not opening.

It is not serious at all. I just think people have got nothing better to do than talk about nonsensical rubbish. We've got a recession on and people being thrown out of work and all people can find to talk about is dates. We need to get real.

Blimey, a free trolley. That must be worth going.

The problem with this thread is the timing of yesterday, tomorrow and today. Now tomorrow is Saturday and today is Friday but yesterday, tomorrow is today and yesterday was two days ago. So I assume they opened yesterday or was that today, bearing in mind that tomorrow it will be opening yesterday. Will they be giving a free trolley tomorrow or was that just today and are you allowed to wheel it down the London Road. We'll see what happens tomorrow then unless you are reading this Saturday when it will be today and Friday will be yesterday.

Cheap food comes at a price of course. But then expensive food comes at a price as well.

All in all, an interesting thread and one which fills me with hope for the people who have time in the day to look at just another supermarket just to see what it's like on the opening day which may or may not have been the opening day depending on what they read.

you are obviously not a woman or suffering under the recession. As they say every little helps. I don't think the point is so much about the opening times but about relying on the papers to get it right. I suppose we all see things in our own little ways.

Getting away from the chat lines rolleyes.gif . It looks like Aldi's are on to a winner in Newbury, at lunchtime today there were queues of cars from the Robin Hood roundabout trying to get into there. And for Squelchy's benefit it looks like there are a lot of 4x4 owners who watch the Jeremy Kyle show as well wink.gif .

Modern clean well kept store, quality goods, low prices - the wonder would be if Newbury people didn't like it!

Waitrose and its peers also have their fair share of Jeremy Kyle show prospects. Just watch, Newbury must be one of the rudest branches I've been in! Twice I've seen parents let grubby kids play and suck stock and leave it at the checkout when it's time to pay.

Why would it not be crowded on the opening weekend? Are you equating the ownership of a 4x4 with education, taste or class? I can think of three chaps at Rettenden who may have disproved that.

No, car. But I was on my bike later.

I'll probably take a look in the week when it's hopefully quieter.

What would you like, for him to stand in the market place with two judges score cards.

That is true (as we all do; if one has a mobile phone then they've got a camera) but those sort of photos I'll leave to the expert (i.e. you). wink.gif

Expert at what?

You are the one who stalks people going about their everyday business & makes spurious comments.

Read what you previously replied to.

As for stalking; not really, just what ever I come across. As for everybody going about their "everyday business & making spurious comments". If people didn't do that we wouldn't have this forum or newspapers and you might end up having a life.

Yawn, Don't you get the irony of a bloke who posts inordinatly about pedantry & pointlessness accusing others of being in need of 'having a life?'

this entire thread of yours illustrates your dire need of stimulation other than internet forums.

I see you even managed to get a few of your catchphrases in without a straight man to supply the lead.

I'm off to do something more exiting now, such as re-arranging my sock draw.

It also illustrates people like you jumping in to stimulate such nonsense. Pot, kettle and black springs to mind.

Actually I am the straight man to your dummy; so thanks for your contribution. All comedians love an audience. tongue.gif

I doubt it; you like me enough and this forum to keep me amused. I can't see you giving up the job for a long time; if you did that would mean you would have a life... apart from your sock draw. laugh.gif wink.gif

I popped into Aldi this morning on my way back from town for a look around. I came away with a bottle of DOC wine, a sandwich for lunch and change from a fiver. Amazingly cheap.

Mind you, I haven't tried the wine yet, but seeing as it's DOC, it should be reasonable. Approximately half the price of similar wines in Sainsbury's!

Posted by: On the edge Apr 4 2013, 04:59 PM

Brilliant! That's cheaper than a bottle of brass polish and a sausage roll from Tesco.

What's DOC wine?

It defines how it is made.

Denominazione di Origine Controllata. It's the Italian equivalent of the French Appellation Controlée. It means it should be better than basic plonk.

I expect Andy's link explains all that. (Edit: yes, I just read it smile.gif)

Wow, every day's a school day! That is quite impressive from Aldi.
