Great list of names, but what's the bet the roads will be named after some faceless council bureacrats. Perhaps the roads should be named after the current crop of green goblins.

Chris Bowsher is from Hungerford.
Theo Walcott is from Compton.
Will Young even further afield, not even West Berkshire.

So if we're allowing those to be considered, may I suggest one Mr A P McCoy of Lambourn..........

Yes there is. Just north of the M4, just off of the Great shefford road. The area is classed as Hungerford.

How about 'Money Way' - after Walter Money, not as a comment on the reason Parkway was built.

Great list of names

Shame so few of them actually come/came from Newbury.

Some are bizarre - Jaqueline du Pre - what on earth is her connection apart from having a sister who lived nearby?

And Lord Falkland and the Earls of Sunderland and Carnarvon - spent a night here once, then died the next day. Just what we need to sell Newbury to visitors!

Happy to be corrected, but I think Will Young lived in Poughley, which is indeed in West Berks. I think he still has family connections with The Pheasant at Shefford Woodlands, also in West Berks.
A question; on what grounds do we adopt someone as our own? After all, it's reported that Jesus was born in a stable, but that doesn't make him an honourary horse..... wink.gif

If some poor bloke doesn't have a face perhaps it's the least that can be done do to cheer him up. Not sure how we'd tell if he's smiling though, perhaps he'd give us a thumbs up. wink.gif

I vote for Walcott Way.

I would prefer a name that will have some meaning in the future (assuming Parkway will last longer than the memory of Theo Walcott). I am also against naming it after someone who is still living - no chance of some future scandal making the name an embarassment.

The NewburyToday article suggests Charles Dundas, John Rennie or John Gould as recipients of the 'honour' owing to their connection the the K&A canal. Of the three I'd reject Rennie (no real connection with Newbury apart from being engineer/designer of the canal). John Gould did a lot to get the canal reopened and would be a popular choice as well as a Newburian through and through. Dundas is easily the most significant historical figure though he is more associated with Kintbury, where he lived; apart from the canal he is closely linked with the Speenhamland System, probably the most significant historic event that took place in Newbury apart from the two battles.

However, if we are thinking about historic figures; what about Arnulf/Ernulf de Hesdin, the founder of the town - surely he deserves commemoration. Do we have a Hesdin Road anywhere?
