A more mundane topic than the intellectual posts, but I’m looking for a good reliable plumber to replace a stop ****. Any recommendations?

Wroughton?

No. Can't even put a microlite down there. There is no airfield in close proximity to Newbury that could take it. It was probably just a low pass during a training exercise, although Brize web page doesn't mention one on that day.

Did anyone see and recognise a low flying military aircraft flying over Newbury/Woolton Hill today (Tuesday). It circled round at least three times. The first time it was very low indeed.

Any ideas where it took off from, where it was going to, and why it was so low?

Looked like an Airbus A400M. Has a very distinctive noise probably due to the prop design. Last time I saw it it was heading roughly in the direction of Brize Norton.

My son who was at St Bart's tells me they were streamed for all subjects, so I don't know where these schools with mixed ability classes are.

The only school my kids were not streamed was St Johns. They were streamed at St Nichs and Barts.

My passenger did and an e-mail was sent to Walkers. But if as previously stated the signs are not legal then it will probably fall on deaf ears.

Or he may have been like a Walkers Crisp lorry last Monday that went all the way up Gore Hill past all the signs saying 7.5 t was the maximum for the right hand lane.

And how first class is empty and everyone is jammed in like sardines in cattle class. Time to end first class?

If you travel by coach from Oxford to London it is a case of 'no seat available no ride'. That's in a vehicle traveling at 60mph? not 100+mph.
7903 steamed today Biker and is being inspected by insurance inspector tomorrow. With a bit of luck we will have a few 'dry' runs.

The Reverend Bacon (balloonist and scientist) was a resident of Cold Ash for a good part of his life, anyone have any idea if his house still exists? If so where?

No, I don't think it exists. I believe it was 'Sunnyside' and was demolished in 1963.

Why? It wouldn't prove anything even if he did. Income tax returns don't show illegal dealings or hidden dealings.

Are you inferring that Mr Benyon is involved in illegal or hidden dealings?

Not built quite as well as 7903 though eh? wink.gif

7903 is just coming to the end of its major overhaul with the cladding and backhead fittings going back on prior to painting, and she should be back in traffic at the May Gala.

Some of these April Fool news articles are more convincing than others. But I do quite like the idea of Brexit seeing the return of British cars such the Austin-Healey..... as long as they don't bring back the Austin Princess...

What was wrong with the Princess? Had a couple of 6 cylinder Princess and towed a fully loaded caravan very successfully with the family and dog without any problems.

Walked the dog on Greenham Common this morning. New signs have gone up at the Control Tower carpark. As you enter there is one asking for donations for the upkeep of the Common to be used by BBONT. Further round there is a 'machine' covered in a cardboard box with a sign beside it having £3 in big words on it. Are they looking for a £3 donation or is a parking charge just about to be levied for accessing the Common?

No. The paint work is 'cracked' which it certainly wasn't before.

Somehow, that website doesn't look like a Gowrings site other than the address. I suspect this is a concession rather than a main dealer. Not a risk as the MoT is controlled by the DVSA, (Used to be Vosa) and they set the standards and licence the testers and test stations. This should mean that wherever you go, you get the same test. Dents are optional however.

If the test station cannot open the bonnet, they should refuse to test. If the bonnet will not close correctly, that is an Mot failure and the garage should not use force to close it.

Strange that the poster checked his oil after rather than before the MoT. Bit of a risk if it's a diesel.

It was checked before it went, that is how I new the bonnet would open!

.You don’t have to say any more! Exactly the repose I got when I went back in there yesterday. Basically ‘tough’. I was annoyed that the car was damaged while they had it but what really annoyed me was the fact that they must have known what had happened but had kept quiet about it.

It still operated. Gowrings and Fiddler had no problems when they serviced it. Still doesn't justify damage without any comment!

Took a Focus for its MOT last Monday to a place I have used for a number of years. It’s had a temperamental bonnet lock for some time, but it does work. Had not been to the bonnet lock of the car since the MOT. Went to check the oil, etc. to find that the bonnet has now a very shallow depression in it above the lock and a 2” crack in the paint work. Too late to make a fuss about it now, but I wont be going there again for tyres, exhausts or MOT!

Does anyone else remember what it was like before the roundabouts existed here, when there were the cottages on the right hand side as you turned into Monks Lane.

And Monks Lane was a narrow wriggle of a country lane lined with mature trees.

.
These days trains are more like aeroplanes with poor legroom, smaller windows and many seats that do not line up with them so you have a view of a plastic pillar!

I've yet to see standing passengers on aeroplanes in the western world or, for that matter, on the express coaches travelling on the motorways.
