Clinton Cards leaving the Kennet Centre too, I see. Another blow - no doubt another low-rent, down-market tenant will be sought.

But with a little imagination, surely other uses could be found for the growing swathe of empty properties in the town centre. At the very least the land could be used for housing, which would both relieve the pressure on greenfield sites like Sandelford and bring more life to the town centre.

I'm sure architects could find good ways of converting some or all of the Kennet Centre into housing. What other uses could we find for it?

The Indoor market at Oxford works as a tourist trap.

I doubt you'd be going in there everyday if you lived in Oxford. The fact that it a destination & something a bit special to visit it is what makes it work.

I have a feeling that an indoor market in Newbury would be more akin to Blunsden Indoor Market......

For those of us who are not mind-readers, Blunsdon Indoor Market is near Swindon... (I looked it up.)

I figured that most readers of this forum would be able to use google. Or would be regulars there.

Maybe Newbury needs a "tourist trap"?!

I have a feeling local people like the look of the place, & would go there for something out of the ordinary ( like Haggis ) but would on a day to day basis actually spend very little there.

I like (and use) the indoor market in Halifax when I am up that way. It had clothes, food, toys and even hairdressers.

Wouldn't hurt. We do have a lot of visitors to the town, check out the number of coaches that stop at the Wharf, and race days is always busy. Best market I have ever been to was the one in Barcelona.
