I need to hire a small skip to remove some household items; broken down wardrobe, old carpet etc., it is all ready to go so need it for just half a day. Does anyone have a company they can recommend, or companies I should avoid?

Suprised you have not found someone elses skip to dump all your stuff in. It seems that most people seem to do this. Good luck in trying to avoid other people doing this with your skip when you have hired it!

if you don't have a drive for it to go on, and it goes in the road, it will cost quite a bit more (they have to pay something to WBC I believe).

We use Hills in Kintbury. Not really got any thoughts on the service....they drop it off and pick it up.

Make sure you shop around before you hire one. We used Hills last summer. Their price for a standard size skip was £155 (July 2010). Some of the companies I phoned wanted £250 for the same size. A mini skip should be cheaper.

Is this not the sort of 'bulky domestic waste' that WBC will arrange collection of? For skip hire much depends on where you live in relation to the depot/where they tip. If you do go for a mini-skip then be sure everything will fit in no higher than the skip sides, or you could end up paying twice and losing any saving.

I hear Grundons have a growing customer base, especially in the Hermitage/Chieveley area.

When I did the patio a couple of years ago, I used Hadleys for a standard skip. Delivered when they said, collected when they said too.

Not cheap but the days of cheap skip hire have long gone now.

I worked in the office for both Grundons and Hills many years ago and they are both just as good as each other.

Not for free they don't. They now charge by the item. Can work out very expensive.

Charge is £25.00 per item I think.

Freecycle can work for servicable stuff.

According to West Berkshire Council website it is £25.40 for 5 items. They class a bed as 2 items - mattress plus the base.

Cheaper than fly tipping.

Order a lockable skip, more money but saves people adding their junk.

I am currently trying to order a small lockable skip for my work, our contarct is with Biffa and for a week now they haven't be able to supply one. Well, they could supply a 10 meter one.... laugh.gif

laugh.gif Good point!

Mind you having to go all the way down the hill to the Swan Roundabout and then back up the hill to the tip (sorry - recycling centre) even that costs a fair bit now!

Beware the cheap skip and possibly an unlicensed operator.
Builder offered a cheap cash skip to clear the renovation he had just completed. Contents were fly tipped but builders name and address were on some of the packaging from the skip.
Guess who had to pay the hefty fine.......
