QUOTE (On the edge @ Feb 27 2013, 04:30 PM) There we are; who said the High Street was dead and just full of cafés and estate agents! Gosh, we'll be moaning about the empty units in Retail Park at this rate. I suppose Aldi, Morrison and Maplin all did their business case research before the Council had any ideas about charging for on street parking? Both have parking. I doubt Aldi will get many shoppers from town as they are slightly too far removed from the town centre for most people's legs.

QUOTE (wabbit @ Feb 27 2013, 03:09 PM) Hurrah! At last we are to be allowed a little more choice in our food shopping.
As Newbury and Thatcham have been dominated for too long by Tesco, it will be good to see this Northern chain in the town (along with the new Aldi of course).
Morrisons were one of the only supermarket chains not to be embroiled in the current horsemeat fiasco - so, although it is a shame to see HMV close, I for one will welcome another food shop.
Morrisons are also one of the few supermarkets to sell some of the less 'glamorous' cuts of meat such as shin of beef.
I'll make a space in my freezer now! Griffin's not get you shin of beef then? I'm not exactly enthused by the though of another supermarket - I don't call another retailer of processed food a good thing.

QUOTE (GMR @ Feb 27 2013, 05:23 PM) It is good to see new shops coming to Newbury.
I often cycle through Newbury but I only noticed today that the Ink cartridge filler (or whatever they are called) has closed down. By the looks of it it has been closed down quite awhile. I also noticed the shop next to it also closed down; sad. Cartridge placed closed a few months back. Hardly surprising really give the very specialist nature of the business. Tiger Tiger closed about 2-3 weeks back. Still, not to worry Morrisons are opening....

QUOTE (motormad @ Feb 27 2013, 05:50 PM) Stupid place for a shop. The car park at the back is far too small and I can only see you still having to pay to park, I'm still going to Sainsburys. Morrisons has a scummy feel about it. .....for J turns, donuts & dogging? You are right about the feel of Morrisons - odd as they bought up Safeway, which always had quite a nice ambiance.

QUOTE (newres @ Feb 27 2013, 03:50 PM) We need an Asda. Then our fuel prices will drop by 5p a litre. Asda price in Reading today = 136.7 p/L Morrisons price in Reading today = 133.9 p/L

QUOTE (stewiegriffin @ Feb 27 2013, 06:26 PM) Not sure about the 'scummy feel'
The Morrisson's where I used to live had by far the nicest store in town. A great bakery and butcher's and a better range than the competing Sainsbury's and Tesco.
I think it just depends which branch you happen to be in. I've even seen some crappy Waitrose here and there.
With the new Aldi as well maybe that will make Sainsbury's and Tesco up their game in Newbury. Tesco London Road - has a far larger range of food stuffs than either Sainbury's or the Tesco Extra. This whole instore bakers & butchers - isn't really though is it. It isn't as if the butchers is having entire sides of animals delivered & the bakers just heat up pre mixed stuff....

Morrisons butchers do indeed butcher / chop / cut up / and prepare the meat the instore. Which is why you can ask them for a particular cut or joint. Morrisons bakers, in most of their stores 'scratch-bake'. i.e. not just warmed up from pre-delivered chilled loaves, but actually fully prepared and baked instore. I don't want to sound too much like a cheer leader for Morrisons (Waitrose is my shop of choice) but they really do seem to be trying much harder than the other bas***ds. Good luck to them. (Although I fear the Newbury shop may prove too small).

It was a couple of years ago, but Morrisons were far and away the best value for organic fresh fruit and veg (if you didn't happen to be growing it on your allotment ).

QUOTE (Simon Kirby @ Feb 27 2013, 06:57 PM) I also like the Morrison's cafe (I poop in at Devizes reasonably often) - very good for the meat-free platter. Probably cooked in trans-fat, but hey! I'm guessing Morrisons Newbury will be too small to have a cafe though. I do hope you clear up after yourself. The cafe at Reading is dreadful.
