QUOTE (On the edge @ Oct 18 2009, 04:51 PM) So, according to this, you are saying it is illegal to be on possession of a knife you have just purchased legitimately and are transporting it home. Yet, in a previous post, it is held that it is quite OK for a Chef to take his knives from his place of employment and have them with him – on the basis that they are the personal tools of his trade. And we don’t live in a Police state! I would argue that actually it is quite legal in the first circumstance but if and only if the Police have good reason to suspect that the person with the knife might be about to do criminal acts. Frankly, having had some experience of the restaurant trade I’d be more suspicious of a chef in such circumstances. Would not be unreasonable for any restaurant to invest in a safe in which to keep knives on the premises – a suitable one is less than £30 from Tesco! No I'm not saying it is illegal to be in possession of a knife you have just purchased, providing you have lawful authority or reasonable excuse to have it in your possession. As already mentioned, the Police would ascertain this by way of questioning. A Police state was not mentioned by me. You can argue the legalities of it in a court of law, I was just quoting the law on this. I agree with the chef scenario, as stated this would be confirmed by questioning (that's what the Police do!!) However I have taken a stanley type knife from a 17 year old at 10pm on a friday eve who told me he was a decorator (he was and therefore had a reasonable excuse ) and that he had it on him due to this. However when I asked him what time he had finished work, he said 4pm. He also said he had been home already so he had the opportunity to leave it there, therefore the reasonable excuse vanished - result - confiscation of said knife. |

QUOTE (GMR @ Sep 14 2009, 06:50 PM) I agree... we've got to get tough. My God, I find myself agreeing with you!! Let's all remember the Courts pass the punishment down, the Police can only put the (alleged) offender before the court |

QUOTE (GMR @ Sep 14 2009, 11:13 AM) Of course it is called a shoulder number... I never said it wasn't called that. But it is also called the other as well. And just in case that wasn't enough evidence for you....here's some more!!! http://www.thamesvalley.police.uk/joinus/a...signia-officersI know GMR will come back and say that they are called both 'shoulder' and 'epaulette' numbers and that he got this info from 'higher up the food chain' but PLEASE can he show any official referral to the second term? I think not. |

QUOTE (GMR @ Sep 12 2009, 11:09 PM) I didn’t research it, I knew. I was talking about you saying you were a police officer. As for this thread; that was Chesapeake. And how do we know it was an informed opinion? Are you saying that everybody who wishes to give an informed opinion must also state what they do to impress and strengthen what they said? That’s rubbish. You do realise you are getting your money’s worth, don’t you? Next time I debate on politics I'll tell everybody I am a senior member of the government so people will know that what I said was an informed opinion Of course you knew it (but that is also unsubstantiated, isn't it?) Well I was certainly informed when it came to the infamous'epaulette number' remark you made, that did make me and at least one other chuckle!! Little things like that show a degree of knowledge which those outside the job, like you, obviously do not have - therefore informed. Not everyone has to state their profession but (I'm going to repeat myself again here, but with some emphasis) IT WAS RELEVANT AT THE TIME |

QUOTE (GMR @ Sep 12 2009, 10:57 PM) Did I say I didn’t know what it was? I said I never quoted it. It is the Intelligence Corps moto.
I am not bothered what anybody does on here... it was you who wished to tell everybody what you did. From my experience on forums I know that people come up with any rubbish just to impress the gullible and the weak; because it can’t be proven. If I said I was a doctor on here I would expect people to challenge me. It is easy to say what you want on here. I suggest to you that if you wish to keep your identity a secret then don’t go boasting what you can’t prove. It doesn’t impress anybody. So many people are easily taken in by such boasts and it is wrong.
True.... but I never started the whole thing off; you did. I’ve never claimed to be anything on here other than a forum writer (you have) unless I was prepared to back it up (which you won’t).
Just a matter of interest; why did you feel you need to tell everybody that you were a policeman? So that it would strengthen what you said? Well researched re the motto!!!! Took you a while though.... Oh and I didn't start the whole thing off, I'm sure it was Chesapeake, yes I'm sure that's who started it..... OK I will repeat myself, my profession and that of Ossy came out during a thread which required an informed opinion....Right that's sorted, move on |

QUOTE (GMR @ Sep 12 2009, 10:35 PM) Actually you should change the record as it was you who asked.
I didn't say 'knowledge gives strength to the arm' by the way.
I am not actually interested what you do, only that you volunteered the information to everybody on here and I just thought it should be authenticated otherwise it didn't mean anything other than a boast; an unsubstantiated boast. I haven't claimed to be anything... well that is not true. I claimed to be a member of NAG and a secretary of my local association. Both can be authenticated if you like. GMR, I did not quote you on the 'knowledge gives strength to the arm', merely quoted a particular organisation's motto, thought you might have known that one. If you are not interested in what I do, that's fine so you will now stop asking people for their personal details (doesn't matter who started it, you have asked and been told not to, feel like I'm repeating myself but I guess I will have to) As for the 'boast', I don't consider it to be such a thing. I will repeat what I said earlier, your claim re your work is also unsubstantiated isn't it? |

QUOTE (GMR @ Sep 12 2009, 10:26 PM) That is true. But it was you who came up and volunteered what you did... i didn't. Did we really need to know you were a police officer? Knowing what I do won't help the debate along. As for Ches asking precise details; ok... but I must also be allowed precise details about her as well. The same with you; if you want to know more I am quite happy to tell you; even in a PM, but the same must apply to you. All's fair in love and debate. You did need to know at the time as 'knowledge gives strength to the arm', it was relevant at the time in that particular thread. And you know I won't PM you my details, you have been told that before (by me and other users) as well so move on, change the record |
