QUOTE (dannyboy @ May 6 2011, 06:32 PM) It is what the people want. They have just voted & given WBC a mandate for more of the same. That is what it looks like, but do you really think that this vote was about local issues?

True - but most of the councillors represent places other than Newbury. If I lived in Chieveley or Yattendon I would probably be quite happy for Newbury and Thatcham to take 90% of the housing development and to build a new shopping centre. The development of Newbury just doesn't matter much to most of the voters. Not that the LibDems would do anything different, the Tories are only carrying through schemes hatched during the LibDem years.

QUOTE (Richard Garvie @ May 6 2011, 07:01 PM) Thanks to everyone who voted. We got no seats, but 9166 votes which is a fantastic result based on what we got in 2007 and at the general election.
We have learned a lot from this campaign, here's to four years of growing the party and being even more competetive next time round.
Thanks again :-) Richard, I think your campaign has been a bit rough round the edges, and the mix-up over registration was seriously unimpressive, but you've challenged the complacency and smugness of the lazy lib-con establishment, and I applaud that. I hope you stick around - even better if you dump Labour and pitch in with the Apoliticals. And stranglehold sounds about right. Ain't democracy a wonderful thing.

QUOTE (GrumblingAgain @ May 6 2011, 07:10 PM) Don't know what you mean with the first one, but yes please to the second and don't mind the third. Despite your emotional and over the top choice of words, Newbury will still be a nice market town and things never ever stay exactly the same for ever more. 'Portuguese Roads' is the £2,000,000.00 road surface in the centre of town. As for over-the-top; only to people who think like yourself.

QUOTE (GMR @ May 6 2011, 07:19 PM) What campaign? You think anything RG has said or done publicly has not been part of the campaign?

QUOTE (user23 @ May 6 2011, 07:20 PM) It seems to be what the people of West Berkshire want. Who are we to argue with them? I see it as one of the problems with our 'faux' democracy; I believe most people vote over national issues.

QUOTE (Richard Garvie @ May 6 2011, 07:30 PM) Simon is right, we have been on a very steep learning curve. We need to be more prepared, better funded and hopefully get a bit more support from regional and national hq.
Our entire budget since October has been around £1,100. The Lib Dems spent that in Thatcham West alone!!! I can't see Labour do in well in West Berkshire.
