We've discussed this already, but I still can't find details of the council consultation online and view the responses. I did find this:
http://decisionmaking.westberks.gov.uk/mgC...DF.aspx?ID=4711A number of flaws in the process from what I can see: Only a report on the strong leader model was made available, would it not be fair to see reports on both models? The mayor option is apparently wrong for West Berks as it "introduces the prospect of personality into local politics"!!! Point 2.5 suggests that the lack of response to the consultation could be because "people accept the councils position or the issue disn't engage with resident" - I would suggest that people were unaware of this consultation. It also states that the Mayoral option is "not an option as it was ruled out previously". Point 2.3 The local strategice partnership board had no comment on the strong leader model. What it doesn't tell you is that if you look furter down the document, they requested the Mayoral system.
Is it just me, or were they determined not to even consider the Mayoral system? As a party, we have decided to ask for a proper consultation on the basis that the public have been bringing it up with us eg. "Why don't we have an elected Mayor like London" or "Why can't we elect the person to lead the council". If Graham Jones refuses to hold a consultation, we have decided that we will call for a referendum on the issue in order to give residents an opportunity to take part in the future leadership process.
