I must say I think the new Aldi proposed in London Road is a great idea and will remove the eye sore that is currently the boarded up the Renault garage.

Competition shouldn't be too greatly affected, it gives an alternative choice to people just outside the town centre.
Your thoughts?

Think it's great news - will be good to see the eye sore gone. But also fantastic to get another food store fairly close to the town centre to compete with the mighty Tesco. My other half will also be particularly pleased if I'm tempted to pop in there in the way home from work, rather than Waitrose!

I think this a great idea. Having a supermarket in town is going to be so much more convenient. Tesco metro is ok for a loaf of bread and a pint of milk, but now people will be able to park up, go into town and then go and do their grocery shop all in one. And competition with Waitrose and Tesco metro can only be a good thing for the consumer.

Yes indeed - and it's interesting to note that in Ireland both Aldi and Lidl have gone head to head with the mighty Tesco and appear to be winning. Just hope it doesn't sound the final death knell for those few independent shops remaining in Newbury

I think the opening of Aldi will add some competition, which is much needed.

True.

ALDI on old Wheeler's site:

Anyone noticed any development on this site yet, or won't they start until J Lewis is finsihed?

As it is the site base for Parkway I doubt it will be opening for Baked Beans and frankfurters yet a while
