Why 56mph? Seems an odd number to me (by odd, I mean strange of course! [doh])

I think the speed limit is put in place so that the maximum true speed for the truck would be no more than 50mph (allowance for speedometer accuracy).

It has something to do with lorries that drop below 50 take a long time to get back up to the speed limit and therefore hold traffic up. I am sure one of the more knowledgeable members on here can give a more detailed explanation.

Probably an EU diktat.
Isn't 56mph exactly 90Kph?

Like it used to before when railways wee the main carrier.
In small lorries to main terminals, not long distance juggernauts having crashes on main trunk roads.

If we're going all retro then presumably the next step is to ban these holiday narrow-boaters from the Kennet & Avon and open up the canals for exclusive use by commercial traffic. Kick the cyclists and walkers off the tow paths and return them to being being 'paths what are used for towing'.. A resurgence of the Shire Horse and 6 month delivery schedules.....

I'll leave it there as sensible debate has left the room! rolleyes.gif

Don't like the use of the word diktat, but yes, 56 mph is just over 90 km/h. I already thought it must be the case, but knowing that 50 mph is 80 km/h, the mental arithmetic didn't seem to compute.

Exactly right. Perverse, but the UK speed limit for LGVs remains 60mph on motorways, but because of the EU rule they have to hold to 56mph. The slight variation is down to the vagaries of the engine governing system, tyre age, and the fact that mechanical things have their moments.

Before crying out for new speed limits on the A34. the last incident that closed the road for 12 hours was a single vehicle
accident.

Also, be careful what you wish for. LGV on single carriageway roads are limited to 40 mph (unless a lower limit is signed). Do you really want to follow a truck at 40 mph all the way from Basingstoke?

It's a dual carriage way though, so everything could travel at 50 mph, and overtake eanything that couldn't.

Just a thought. Well why not ce? I reply to myself.
Did the M11 Huhne vs Huhne controversy not involve an
opportunity for an an awareness course?.. that would have sorted out the men from the boys and girls.

The idea that speed cameras be positioned on that stretch of road is a bit odd.
The only accident in my memory happened about 5 miles away on a slip road to the M25.
A lorry ran into a 2 CV ... well not the best way to meet a 16 wheeler.

Back to the A34.

I do, nearly every day...... (not the same lorry - they all seem to stick to the limit)

There was just as many serious incidents on the M3 last week as there were on the A34. The only difference is no one was seriously injured on the A34.

Exactly, you cannot simply single out this road (or this piece of road).

Chaos today. Drove to Oxford and back in the rain yesterday. Too many people driving too fast and too close together in very wet conditions, including many HGVs, particularly in the outside lane. There will inevitably be more fatalities soon, could be a huge crash if people keep driving like morons in these conditions. Very glad I don't have to drive on it every day.

Note to BMW, Merc and Audi drivers: just because you're driving overpowered German company cars doesn't mean you have to drive like complete idiots. When you do crash, please try to run into each other.
