Further to the rant about the Grand National being cruel I think that the London Marathon should also be banned.

How many more runners do we need to lose? People seem to die every year in this cruel and barbaric race.

I didn't see anyone being whipped over jumps by a jockey, or being persuaded to run the race where they didn't want to.

'whipped over jumps by a jockey' - jockeys tend not to use the whip when jumping fences.

'persuaded to run the race where they didn't want to' - If a horse does not want to run it won't. I've seen many dig there heels in and refuse to race. And it makes no difference what a jockey does to try and make it run.

My reply was as tongue in check as yours, but my point still stands: horses do not volunteer their services.

I have.
I asked a horse if he minded jumping big fences and he answered 'Nay'

I'm assuming that this facetious post is a reference to the tragic death of a female competitor on Sunday. An appalling loss for the young woman's family, but unfortunately it happens. Get 40,000 people together for half a day and the chances of one of them dying is statistically quite high just because that's a lot of people and we all have to go some time. On balance being fit and taking exercise is far better for your physical and mental health than not.

People get great pleasure out of it. Everything you do has risks. Like walking across the road (more people die walking across the road than running marathons). Maybe we should just ban people dying?

If you did it might become more popular.

It's just horseplay and as for GMR, he was never at the races.
