I am requesting the reason just why a precept payer, namely Simon Kirby, is not allowed to take a tenancy of an allotment.

Expect something along the lines of, "We are unable to comment on individual allotment application decisions." I doubt it'll make any difference whether one, or a hundred people ask the question.

Are the council obliged to give a reason for refusal? And if so, how does one ensure they do?

As opposed to those who do get out much, but then spend their time while they are out looking at Facebook on their phones. tongue.gif

...I don't believe parking on a pavement is actually an enforceable offence...

I think the offence is 'causing an obstruction', or similar wording (I had an altercation some time ago with a van driver who had done just that). So parking on the pavement itself wouldn't be an offence. But if you were to block the pavement, or make it very hard for pedestrians to pass, then that would be.

Hard work and a good education are not guaranteed to provide anything...

Precisely.

There are plenty of well educated, hard working people working jobs on minimum wage. Perhaps less so than a couple of years ago, but how long do you think it will be before those folk can afford to buy their own home?

Not to mention that, in order to simply get a university education to offer a potential employer, you are looking at burdening yourself with £20k+ of debt before you've even found work.

Is that how you see people that don't own more than one house or an expensive car? I would suggest that it says more about you than those you seem to look down on.

I wonder how many folk from Newbury have considered the recent Clegg plan to add extra taxes to
folk with another home which they don't need.

Personally speaking, I have no problem with people who own more than one home getting heavily taxed for it. It's a luxury, at a time when many hard-working folk are struggling to even get on the first rung of the property ladder. And well-off people snapping up second/third/forth properties are only making the lack of available housing (and therefore inflated house prices) worse. If people want somewhere of their own where they can holiday then buy a chalet, or other type of holiday home.

I purchased a laptop from John Lewis online and they were cheaper than Amazon and other resellers, plus I got additional 1 year warranty. Very happy with it.

Same here. I bought a TV from them that was the same price as other retailers, and it has a 5-year warranty on it for no extra cost.

What is the average waiting time for an appointment to see a GP these days? I was quoted ~2 weeks, is that normal? I understand that Labour wanted to get it down to 2 days, but of course that doesn't help if there is a big queue elsewhere in the service.

I can usually get in in a couple of days. Or, depending on what time you ring, they sometimes have cancellations. The last time I tried to book an appointment though, it was a week before they had any availability.

Seems busy at the weekends whenever I am in town. On the rare occasion that I am there during the week it's certainly quieter, but then it would be, wouldn't it? From what I can see it's as busy as the rest of the town centre. Go on then, which rumors have you heard and from where?

The game was faulty and in the same week i brought it from Tesco, Game were selling the same game for half price and it was a new title.

If the game is genuinely faulty, (won't play on your PC/console) then Tesco are obliged - like any other retailer - to replace it or refund you. If you just wanted to return the game because it's cheaper elsewhere then it's not surprising they won't refund.

I cannot recommend this bodyshop to anyone any more, not so much because of the work but because of the terrible attitude of certain members of staff.

I don't think it's just the bodyshop. I spoke to a salesman in the showroom there about a new car at the beginning of the year and he was just as arrogant. He only seemed interested in getting me what they had in stock. They didn't have a vehicle that matched what I wanted, only models that were over-specced and a colour I really didn't want. I said I would consider spending more so long as we could meet somewhere on price, but he said he couldn't come down on price at all. He also said that there was no point in going elsewhere either as no-one would negotiate on price. What a way to win customers!

The market itself isn't interesting enough as it stands to attract shoppers in its own right...

Then why should it be given special treatment, especially over other retailers in town?

The market sells things that most people can either get elsewhere for a better price, or better quality, or things that people aren't interested in. If a shop opens up in any other part of the town and has the same problems then they'd go out of business. Let the public decide.

That's what I thought.

Me too. I'm also certain that the council must have a steady stream of people who receive a ticket and then try it on. If this guy provided the same story to the council that he did to the NWN, then it wouldn't take a genius at the council to work out that he knew what he was doing. If I were them I would pursue it.
