Sad to see RUP step down... I think it's time for a fully blown investigation into the conduct of officers and the leadership at Newbury Town Council. So much money has been wasted, and quite possibly any chance of getting what was owed and helping those residents / businesses who were affected is now gone.

Julian Swift-Hook and David Allen should be the first to resign over this.

Biker - you can check the data online... it wasn't much less at all. The Guardian published the figures not long ago for every station in the country.

Hi, just a quick post. When I was politically active in West Berks, I led a regional campaign to save ticket offices. The Telegraph have today published a list of ticket offices that will be axed, and it appears only Newbury, Didcot, Reading and Basingstoke will retain them with all the others locally being closed (including Thatcham which takes almost as much money as Newbury).

Tickets for the Thatcham Fireworks comedy night on June 22nd at Newbury Corn Exchange are now on sale from the box office and online at cornexchangenew.com. Tickets are just £10, and TV funny man Patrick Monahan, Radio 4's Lucy Beaumont and the UK's only deaf comedian Steve Day are performing. All proceeds go to the 2014 Thatcham Fireworks display.

Last year, the firework display raised almost 2.5k for the Poppy Appeal on the night. The event relies completely on sponsorship and this year there is additional fundraising so that there is a contingency fund in place. The Poppy Appeal will be collecting again this year, and the main collection on the gate will be for the Mayor of Thatcham's charities.

Full event details for the display will be announced in due course.

I left Tesco last summer thank you!!

Interesting that JSH is still pretending he is not blackdog!! And anyone else notice the flip flopping JSH has done over the various proposals for depots / employment at the common?

Problem is, the ldf was such a bodge job, the Tories said it couldn't be delayed further because we needed protection against exactly this kind of development. Let's see if they stick to their word... I doubt it!!

Absolutely right, would be in my interest to play the numbers down. Not sure I can get a bill now, but certainly next year will require a lot more planning!!

That's the official estimate I've been given.

As for the temporary events notice I applied for User, I had estimated 3,000. I thought that was being optimistic!!

I just wanted to say thank you to the estimated 10,800 people who turned up on Saturday night, and to ask what you all thought (those who attended)?

Should the Racecourse ever actually come up for sale, chances are some Middle Eastern royal will snap it up with their loose change........

Isn't it already owned by a middle east consortium / hedge fund? Please feel free to quote me on the asset stripping, but I won't say I told you so.

Best thing would be to apply to register land as an asset of community value and have the stands listed.

I see the price at Tesco has gone up 1p.......

It will. When they drop like they did, it's usually in reaction to cuts by ASDA and Morrisons. If you look at the headlines in the Standard etc over the past few weeks, they typically read "ASDA to cut fuel by 3p" "Morrisons to follow ASDA on fuel price cut" and then there will be something about the others. Tesco and Sainsbury's always the last to lower prices, and shortly after they float slowly up. Wait until Xmas, and the bank holidays. Sainsbury's are renowned for putting 2p on the price of fuel for the bank holiday days, and then it drops again. Very, very strange.

I feel sorry for Ian, he has been completely right about a number of things, including Two Saints and it will be very interesting to see what comes out in the next few weeks on that score. With regards to the subject of this thread, lots of people keen to stick the knife in, but do they know the facts? Be careful what conclusions you jump to.

QUOTE (Andy Capp @ Oct 2 2013, 10:22 PM) *
Richard, can you not find out why we supermarkets price things differently in different areas? That is to say, why are they lower in similarly sized towns else where? What is the driver, or threshold that effects the price?

Tesco and Sainsbury's simply match the lowest price. ASDA pride themselves on being the cheapest on fuel / grocery prices and competitors will only ever match them where they have a store. The recent fuel price reductions were part of a move by all retailers to cut prices in line with supply costs which fell a few weeks ago. As fuel is bought in advance, it usually takes a few weeks for the savings to be passed on (if at all).

What you'll find is ASDA don't do fuel price gimmicks like "spend £50 to get 5p off", they just charge the cheapest price they can. Other retailers try to boost sales in store by offering the loyalty coupons.

I asked lots of questions of the CEO at TESCO and also Justin King at Sainsbury's, and let's say Phil Clarke wasn't best pleased!! To be fair to Sainsbury's, they basically said there wasn't a law against charging more when there was not a discounter in certain markets, and they are right. Until the government look at the price manipulation, they will carry on doing it.

I've said it for years, the owners of the racecourse are effectively stripping the site of it's assets, in this case the land that can be developed on the site. I doubt the council would ever approve for the whole site to be developed, but to try and prevent anything ever getting to that level, maybe a group of local government electors (21 needed) can apply to turn the site into an asset of community value?

Once the last house is sold, the racecourse will be on the market.

Before I left Tesco, I wrote to the CEO and was threatened with disciplinary action. Hopefully Tesco will now keep prices at the same level as other local towns that have an ASDA. There is a huge investigation needed into price manipulation from TESCO, Sainsbury's and to a lesser extent Morrisons.

Having had a quick scoot through this thread, I can confirm that the council knew the patient was dying. I'm not going to get involved in this thread or go into any detail, other than confirm that I did ask David Lowe what was going on well before the story made print and he lost the plot with me. That's all I'm saying.

I've spoken on this issue here for many years. ASDA are the only retailer who charge a flat price for fuel. For example, the ASDA price for fuel at Kettering / Corby has been 132.9p over the weekend. In these towns, TESCO charge the same price. Where there is not an ASDA store, Tesco charge up to 6p a litre more. I wrote to TESCO CEO Phil Clarke on this issue and was then threatened with disciplinary action for raising the issue... needless to say no action was taken.

This issue will be in the national spotlight very soon, and I am doing what I can to fight the issue. Unfortunately, I can only see cheaper fuel prices in Newbury if we have a new ASDA store as TESCO, Sainsbury's and others simply do not have the stomach to take a hit on their profit margin.

And then, when the cafe/museum concept doesn't get off the ground he turns it into a house and sells it on at a profit.

Always assuming he is the highest bidder in the first place.

Once it's sold it's fate is largely down to the owner. Personally I'd rather see it demolished than the precedent is set for selling off bits of the common for housing.

Come on J, you know that you can insert covenants to protect what the site can and can't be used for.

Personally, if we are to choose between a Swift Hook led museum which is paid for by two mortgages at the expense of Greenham residents or a privately funded / community orientated project, I'd go for the latter. Let's not forget that the Lib Dems recently blasted the council for adopting a Labour manifesto pledge from 2011 which will see the commons and country parks run by a not for profit organisation which will save the taxpayer money. It will also ensure that the area's are better cared for and dare I say it "loved".

There is so much rubbish coming out of Lib Dem HQ at the moment, and none of it makes any sense. Looking beneath the lines, it's just more opportunistic political point scoring as they have no real idea's or policy suggestions of their own!!

Just on a seperate note, the Lib Dems are backing the giving away of the Market Street land (read back through the NWN archives from a few weeks ago) yet they are trying to use that one against the Tories too. Only Labour are standing up with a consistant message here: Do not give away public assets for no financial / economic gain to the taxpayer.

I did say local councils

So a PC has no such actual legally defined role, but if they are the only ones who actually want to save a little bit of heritage so what.

I don't care if they do have the 'power' or not. If the local council wants to off load what must be a drain on resources to a group who want to turn that state of affairs around and if it happens that GPC are the only people who have the balls to come up with a viable plan to save the tower best of luck to them.

There is an Aussie businessman trying to secure the site as a war memorial and cafe. Better option in my opinion, and if he pays more for the site it's a win / win.

If only the people signing the petition realised that the "private" bidder wants to turn it into a war museum and cafe... Swift Hook is also keeping quiet about the fact that hundreds of thousands of pounds will also need to be mortgaged by GPC to fund the works... it's 'The Priory' all over again, another Lib Dem scheme to thwart a community minded individual from doing something in the public interest.

I personally see all of this as empire building by the Lib Dems. Buy a disused building with one mortgage, and then take out a second mortgage to fix it up. They then blasted the council for letting a not for profit run the commons etc. (no doubt Swift Hook has been eyeing these up too). And they even have the cheek to blast the district council for investing additional money in our roads (whilst calling on residents to report pot holes to them!!). Lib Dems = politically, morally and soon to be financially (at our cost) bankrupt.

According to my limited understanding, the 'straw man' statement should only be made by the victim. Here we have a 3rd party, maybe with no connection to the originator, making the 'fallacy' claim on his behalf. Maybe RG does wish there was a competitor store, but got only as close as he dare to saying so.....

I was never asked if I would support an ASDA opening in Newbury, but my position on that would be if a suitable site could be found, let's do it. If it saves us up to 8p a litre on fuel, I'd certainly support it.

I've heard nothing back from head office about my letter, and will inform you if I do. I just feel that Tesco should be leading the way to ensure it's customers are dealt with in a fair manner. If that can't be achieved, I'll have no option but to quit. I put doing the right thing before loyalty any day of the week, and whilst that may be the wrong attitude to have in some eyes, at least the community can see that I will always strive to do what is in their interest over my own.

If those people like Richard had not received a 5% tax cut this year, that is over £3bn which could have been used on various policies to help the poor / vulnerable. Instead, the government are hitting the most vulnerable over and over again, which is why Mr Benyon asking us to eat leftovers is a bit of a slap in the face.
