Some major A34 work a few weeks away, with above dates seeing full closures 10pm-6am on local section, J13 to Didcot.

Received Highways Agency letter today, as no doubt some others will have.

Website for more details not active as yet, but will be I hope as commencement date gets closer.

What's with the sporadic random underlining and italics?

Is this the section with the huge dip and crest on it that's getting redone, on the inside lane where the road curves gently to the right?

If you come the other way it curves to the left......

Posted by: motormad Oct 11 2013, 07:17 AM

Yes, but coming the other way doesn't give the bump......

Posted by: Mr Brown Oct 11 2013, 07:39 AM

They've got to do the repairs sometime and at night seems to be least disruptive. We've had lots of folks complaining about the state of the roads in the area and now we seem to be having complaints about them being mended!

Thanks for the warning, although it shouldn't impact me I do frequently take trips to hospital in Oxford at unusual times so this is useful to know.

The emergency services will be able to cope with this and have well practised processes and procedures. I suspect what Mr Brown is getting at is the way the announcement is made, an unqualified 'massive disruption', and claims that the web site isn't up. This isn't the first time, by any means, that parts of the A34 has been closed at night. Actually, the news should be quite positive; big benefits to motorists as A34 brought up to scratch. Good to know that road repairs are happening!

Now in NWN with more meat;
it's surprising how much traffic travels the route in those hours, and diversion
is a b**++dy roundabout route to follow.

What solution would you suggest?

I didn't know there was an M404!

You are correct, but there is an A404(M), junction 8/9 on the M4

Isn't that suggested route for HGV's?

What, to get to say, Northampton from Southampton?

No they'd go up the A34 the whole way.

Rubbish!!!

M3/M25/M1

Check route planners

Posted by: On the edge Oct 11 2013, 01:42 PM

What about leaving the road as it is. As the surface deteriorates it will have the effect of naturally reducing speeds. Speed causes accidents according to the great and the good. So win-win, no disruption, no upset villagers, no costs of repair to pay, reduced number of accidents, new speed limit without cost of signs.

Posted by: motormad Oct 11 2013, 01:46 PM

And what stupid route planner have you checked?

Maps.google.com
A -> Southampton (goes to Southampton Uni)
B -> Northampton (goes to Northampton Uni)

Even looking at it on the Map, why would you put a loop into what is otherwise basically a straight line.

From Newbury, to go to Northampton (And trust me as I go very regular to that area for shows and what not) it is only a few minutes longer in time, but another 25 miles or so, to go M4-M25-M1.

Posted by: dannyboy Oct 11 2013, 02:13 PM

Truckers follow the line of least resistance. Wheras boy racers like adverse cambers & such like to get a bit of a rise as they speed over them, truckers like to set the cruise to 56 & meander along. Unless they are an owner driver the cost of the fuel & the mileage is of no concern. Having said that the Motorway route is likely to be more economic in a truck.

I agree that in a car the A34, A43 is the best option, but not in a 44t truck. All those roundabouts on the A43.....

Boy racers. laugh.gif If you weren't so silly I would laugh.

I didn't say I was innocent or guilty.
I drove my old Golf much harder. This one I just cruise in.

I just don't find the boy racer jokes funny - hence my comment wink.gif

I would just like to inform any one that doesn't know & that might be using the A339 this weekend ( 11th - 13th Oct. ), that there are planned road works on the Swan roundabout ( the one just down from St. Gabriels ) similar to those that were on the Tesco roundabout last weekend.

I would just like to inform anyone that doesn't know & might have been frightened off from using the A339 this weekend due to the planned roadworks at the Swan roundabout, that those roadworks have been postponed due to Almighty God's interference and him sending in a band of crap weather....

So anyone trying to be helpful about the timing of local roadworks in future just ask Spartacus first who being a sarcastic a--hole will give you all the information you need to know rolleyes.gif .

Why not just call them 'inverted speed humps'? :-)

Posted by: motormad Oct 15 2013, 03:57 PM

Ah yes OTE, because I didn't want my gearbox anyway. Even going 60 at my normal cruising height I bottom out on that dip.

I either have to raise it up or go in the other lane.
By that respect let's not bother with roads at all and drive around on crazy paving.

You can get a new gearbox up the dump like the rest of us and spend the balance of the insurance claim on chrome plating your clutch peddle!

Crazy paving looks nice and people pay a lot for it to pretty up their gardens. We'd get that effect for free; another plus.

There is no way you can argue about a non standard car being subject to conditions a standard car will tolerate. Once the general publics 'standard' car are affected by road conditions, action HAS to be taken. ( Or summat like that!)

And on the beach at Barton-on-Sea during a storm.(Cobbles flying all over the place)
But, you will be unaffected if you are a way up the cliffs.
You can come back with sharks teeth that are millions of years old.

Sorry about my CE moment

My rolling height isn't even "that" low.

The roads around here suck. Go down Craven Road over the speed bumps there and most standard cars will scrape if you take them anything more than 5mph.

A dual carriageway of 70mph speed limit should have a suitably safe and stable road surface.

The A43 is worse with it's pot holes..

Ah I see closed closed Northbound currently from J13 to Didcot, because of shunt at W Ilsley:
M4 closed too at Swindon. Great

Transits from Poland it seems.

and M4 crash also a Transporter, but rather bigger. Look like Hondas off the Swindon production line.
