One of the key points will be to ensure that the data definition and source are absolutely reliable, day on day. This would then stop the distortionists. Statistics are pointless unless you can accurately report like against like. As I write, we are being told we have the highest death toll in Europe, may be the case BUT what are we and they counting? The greater the difference in definition / source the less value even for trend analysis.

Speaking as a qualified statistician and member of the Royal Statistical Society I couldn't agree with you more. There is no point comparing apples with pears or indeed any other fruit. Per capita measures are a good place to start but there are other factors to take into account as well. The John Hopkins University dashboards are a relatively unbiased source in terms of presenting the currently available global Covid data.

Indeed. The really sad thing is if appears that some people actually want more and more people to die in order to further a political agenda. Sure the government have been far from perfect and the time for recriminations will come. Now is not it though.

Exactly. Politicians are not scientists yet alone a virologist so they are always going to be playing catch up. Just seen a piece on the news that some hairdressers are still operating behind "closed" doors, but I have yet to hear that the police are investigating or anyone from the the political arena calling for tougher measures. The main news remains that some random number on testing has not been met, yet no one points to the elephant in the room that the test can be negative and they think they are safe yet they can become infected on the way home and pass it on. Also how many are asking for a test when they are not in that demographic that requires one?
Testing may well have it's place but social distancing is the real answer and if everyone had adhered to it we would be back at work now with countless lives saved.

Worrying isn't it. Irresponsibility seems to be a national trait, now even in the Twittering classes. We've had an expert scientist rightly having to resign his post because he was caught not keeping his own advice personally. Then, today the national public service broadcaster uncovers the hairdressing scam. Of course, they will have passed on the evidence to the Police and let us know what happens next won't they? And so to testing. I seem to remember much weeping and wailing about our lack of testing and that the German were doing sooo much better. No matter what the Health Secretary said, it didn't shut the noises off, rather increased it. So, what to do? As any business would do, set an ambitious target and go for it. Whilst the plan developed, yet more twittering, 'they want do it', but of course, they did! No armchair 'o' level pundit will admit to being wrong, so they must have fiddled the figures mustn't they? I won't even comment as to the difference between number of people given tests v number of transactions, but surely a moment's thought will tell you 'they' can't really easily control the numbers coming forward but certainly can manage the number they can offer. Government in times of national crisis is hard enough, but without any competent opposition and without responsible reporting, almost impossible. Seems to me that it's now time to significantly enhance the Emergency Powers Act.

Again, I am in absolute agreement. What we do now and next is the most important thing.

Interesting find. Well illustrates the attitudes of our supposed upcoming intelligencia. That was the saddest clip I've seen all week and little point in worrying about what we do next.

Comparing apples with antelopes.
UK has 30,000 deaths. And so our press are happy. They have something to hit Boris the dozy bear with. We're the worst in Eurrope! Hold the front page while we put our hindsight glasses on and lets demand they all resign

At least we're not as bad as USA though. USA has 70,000 deaths. That's terrible! Worst in the world!

But that conveniently overlooks the fact that the US has a population half the size of the whole of Europe. 50 separate states, many of which are larger than most countries in Europe.

Europe 740million population USA 328million population. 70,000 deaths from 328million people isn't as bad as Spain with 25,000 deaths from just 47 million people for instance.

No cases of Covid deaths or even incidents in the whole of China for days. The whole of China. Utter rubbish. I'm sure that sometime before the end of the year there will be a massive cyclone that will have 100,000 deaths attributed to it.. "No colonavilus. No no no.. death by cyclone"

Reminds me of a maths teacher who spent all afternoon trying to explain to us why 2+2 only approximately equalled 4. Never did understand his workings but at least it made me understand that you can prove anything with figures. Until the world starts operating as one we will never get a true reading but I suspect total casualties will exceed 1 million. About the same as a small but bloody war.

Such a non-story it's almost beyond belief. But then it is the Daily Fail.

Someone found some business cards. Those business cards rather surprisingly had contact details on them. That, believe it or not, is the nature of a business card. Staff who run Army Careers Offices have business cards. Many military personnel of all ranks in specialist roles have business cards that they can hand out at exhibitions and conferences.

This is more about an ex-squaddie with a chip on his shoulder who hands the cards to an ex-squaddie with an even BIGGER chip on his shoulder who runs a website renowned for giving the MOD grief over conditions of service etc who decides to make a meal of it and get some free publicity for his 'respected' (Ha!!) Facebook page.

The careless officer is however a thoroughly unpleasant individual and those who have had the displeasure of dealing with him are laughing about the fact he is squirming over this non-event. If he had handled this with a bit less of the "Do you know how I AM?! Give me those cards back!" and more of the "Thanks for letting me know. They're just business cards. Bin them or shred them" He’d have achieved a less embarrassing outcome if he’d thanked the guy and bought a couple of slabs of beer to give him in exchange for his cards.

I used to be on a forum that specialized in posting up pictures of 'modified'' cars for the general entertainment of all. The number of irate messages saying " your exposing my registration, take it down or I'll sue you" was legendary. They simply couldn't comprehend the inanity of the statement, it would usually descend in a torrent of text speak with threats of 'leegle axion' from my mate who's a lawyer. Idiots. 🤣
